Here is a video about how I eat and cook food while living and traveling full-time in my Toyota Prius that I converted into a camper. I've been traveling the country for a while now and have tried many different ways to cook inside my car and the cooking setup I have now is what I like best. I can actually cook INSIDE my Prius.
I have a Cosori pressure cooker (which is the same thing as an "instant pot"), a microwave, a 12-volt refrigerator and lots of different utensils. In this video I show you everything that I cook with and then cook a meal at the end.

Bought a Prius the day after I watched another video by this guy...no joke. Got me a 2013 Prius v! Just got back from a 16-day Covid-approved trip...so awesome when it was 14 degrees outside and I stayed a comfy 70 degrees all night. Thanks so much dude! Full of great advice!
@MountainSpringsAdventures
@MountainSpringsAdventures 3 года назад
That's so cool, glad you are enjoying the Prius you bought! Sounds like a fun trip. At 13 degrees outside and 70 degrees inside, I imagine the engine was kicking on pretty often? I usually keep it on 65 when it's THAT cold just to stop it from kicking on so much just because that is such a big temperature difference. Congrats on getting a Prius v, they are much bigger and roomier than the regular Prius, and they don't make them anymore
@bryanalten
@bryanalten 3 года назад
@@MountainSpringsAdventures thank you! I really appreciate everything you are doing here and all the neat details you share. The first cold night I also set it to 65 at first but then I jacked it up to 70 and really didn’t notice any difference in the on-off cycle timing (I didn’t do a scientific test though). When it’s that cold the whole engine has to heat up for it to remain at 65 or 70 with a lot of frequency, the few extra degrees may have kept the engine on for 10-20 seconds longer but I really didn’t notice it. Cycles were 9.5 min apart. IMHO, well worth the extra quarters of gas money for a comfy steady-state environment. Looking out at the people in the campground early morning at 33 degrees all bundled up with hot coffee in hand and misery on their faces, I was in a t-shirt and feeling quite good about it all.

You can cook anything in an electric pressure cooker, even cakes! You really won't need a microwave, most have a quick saute setting that's good for heating food. The timers on these are a totally convenient feature; you don't have to monitor cooking time, you just set it whether for slow cooking or fast tenderizing or roasting or baking. Mine is a Phillips.

Yeah, I use chemical-resistant spray bottles I get from Menards. I'm sure you can find them elsewhere. Then, I put half vingar solution, and top it off with water. Saves on the amount of vinegar used, and still kills bacteria and viruses from the acidity.

Chickpeas are amazing and really good for you. One spice I can whole-heartedly recommend: Get taco seasoning. It comes in a spice bottle like everything else. Use it instead of salt for some more flavor an a little extra spicy kick (it has a lot of salt in it). It's best to use it when you cook, because it's a little too granular. I've actually taken some and ground it down in a mortar and pestle, and I will sprinkle it on my food.

Love my kitchen shears! Mine come apart so you can easily wash them, especially important if you use for meat. I use for snipping bad spots off lettuce, cutting herbs like parsley, basil, etc.. I recommend using a real bowl with a handle, like a soup mug. It is easier to hold onto, keeps food warmer, easier to clean than plastic and better for heating in the microwave. Some have lids, too. And proper silverware, that feels good in your hand; try garage sale or thrift store. Just cause you are in a vehicle, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your meals more, especially when you take the trouble to cook them.

Also, if you add a small amount of water to the pot after you take out the cooked hot dogs you can deglaze the pot ... and that sauce is delicious, and it cleans the pot. Keep the high heat on while you do it and just scrape in circles with a spatula.

Nice job on the video and frugal cooking ideas, home or on the road! I like the compact pressure cooker even for my low-on-counter-space kitchen at home. Unfortunately, I'm told my Prius (gen.4) was redesigned (2017?) making it much more difficult to install an inverter. May go with a jackery-style lithium power brick instead. And instead of reheating in a microwave, a 12v "portable oven" or "electric lunch box". Thanks for contributing to the research!

Another cooker I use when traveling is called a hotlogic with a car plug, I use it to cook prepared foods, for my Instapot ( it's being shipped) I'll run it off my Jackery1000 that is connected to my Pruis or solar panels

Love your videos.. very informative! May I suggest that take apart kitchen shears are a better choice, they easily separate into 2 pieces for a more thorough cleaning. Particularly important since you are cutting raw chicken and other meats. As far as cooking in aluminum foil, it is recommended that you line the foil with parchment paper (wax paper might also work), the point is you DON'T want the food in direct contact with the aluminum, especially if you've salted and/or made it acidic in any way.. it WILL react and aluminum will leach into your food.. NOT healthy. You can Google it. Also, the water bottle pump might be loose because you need a cap on it? I read that they recommend (and sell separately) those caps/48mm? specifically to avoid loose fitting pumps. Oh, and I presume you sanitize that water bottle with a weak bleach solution and then rinse every month or so? Hope I have helped you in some small way as your videos have been very educational for me as well! Again, LOVE your videos!!! Generous of you showing us the ropes. How is your starter battery doing? Have you had to replace it yet? Do you think it is because of the extraordinary workout you give it?? In any case, I imagine it's cheaper and easier to use and replace your starter battery than buy/use a separate gas generator and LIon battery setup for the Prius! Certainly cheaper than rent and/or utility hookups! Always looking forward to your new videos! One of the few subs I set the bell for!

Love the little pot. Do a little research on oils and what heat does to them. Even delicious coconut oil can be bad for you if you fry in it. You'd be better off investing in good olive oil, if you are interested in health benefits. Adding the oil after you cook is the best idea. Since you save so much money on food, you can afford good oil. That's how I see it, anyway. Best wishes. Good video.

I've got a 2004 Prius and just installed a 1000 watt inverter in it. I so far have a 3 quart instant pot and just ordered a single burner Cusimax infrared cook top with selectable wattage from 100 to 1500 watts. On the burner I can boil, fry, put a small pressure cooker, make coffee, etc. My reason for doing this is to prepare for any power outage that might occur as well as possibly go traveling and do my cooking on board. My inverter has 4 plugs. I bought 4 very long indoor outdoor extension cords so I can power at least my fridge, freezer, basic electronics and a few LED lights in my house in case of a prolonged power outage. I used a Kill-a-Watt to determine how much all the essentials draw and was surprised it came out well below the limits of my inverter. I like the microwave idea, but fear it may take up too much space. Just want to add that one can also fry steaks, hamburger as well as eggs (fried, scrambled, or hard boiled) in an instant pot in the saute mode. Other uses are making yogurt, steamed breads and hot cereals like steel cut oats, multigrain hot cereals, and even spaghetti with noodles. Many many recipes for all this online if you search. My Prius, inverter and Instant Pot are some of my favorite belongings. I'm way over 60 and just like the feeling of having a backup system in place in case of unseen situations.

Nice , but I think I'd try to make room for a two slice toaster for clearance bagels, blueberry eggos and to toast bread . for the knorr pasta/rice sides, just dump hot water into the pouch seal it up (with a chip clip) and either place it into some type of thermal couzi or even chuck it into the instant pot to trap the heat. It should be ready in no time and you could eat it directly out of the pouch.

This is a very nice travel home. It gives you your financial freedom, and takes you anywhere you want and need to go. You might want to add a food processor to puree your beans so you can add water and cooked potatoes or cooked bagged vegetables from frozen. Add in some Spring salad to it and you can stay more hydrated without the bulk. I love to add spring salad to the beans along with a small amount of cooked chicken, beef. or salmon. Turmeric and red wine vinegar makes it delicious. I don't always use beans. Really, mostly just meat,vegetables, and Spring salad. Lately I've been cooking in a little washed tai rice or a potato. You can refrigerate what you didn't eat and add hot water to some later and make a traditional tasting soup. Stew or soup, they taste the same.

Nice Video! What is the max of current you can pull from the 12v battery? I thought the hybrid battery has a 200 amp step-down converter. That would be 2.4 kw. Could you like test that somehow? That would be great.

You can get a much smaller instant pot for smaller servings. Three quart In stead of six. We had our first Prius for 17 years. There was nothing wrong with it the hubby just wanted a new one. The only service we ever did was the 5000 mile services a new battery not the hybrid ones the one regular type battery, tires of course and brake service. It also had nearly 400,000 miles on it and got hit by a huge Chevy truck once in Richmond. The side bent in and then popped back into place and there was a scratch.
