The painting is great. I really appreciate the detailed explanations of how he worked, which is often lacking in other videos about Sargent.

legitimately an excellant sargent copy, you captured his bold brushwork and colour variation very well. I`m curious how you developed this skill, i can only paint grisailles at this point, whenever i try colour i always get the values and tones wrong compared to my black and whites :/
@patrickokra
@patrickokra Год назад
Over a long time, but there was a period of my life where I went to an academy and drew and painted all day everyday for almost 4 years. One point about color is that it’s tied together to the value. Color is light and vice versa. I don’t think it’s so important to focus on grisaille. If you get the right color you will have the right value. Great exercise is doing loads of small 6x8in mastercopies in color
@harryainsworth6923
@harryainsworth6923 Год назад
@@patrickokra doing small 6x8 mastercopies is an interesting idea. Im guessing this basically means a tiny portrait where i need to simplify the tones into big simple planes of colour? Also, how would you recommend to move from monochromatic bust/cast paintings to full colour portraits? thanks so much
@patrickokra
@patrickokra Год назад
It’s definitely easier to start with a limited palette, and add colors over time as you get comfortable/feel the need to push your chroma. And yup, on a way you can consider them as color studies. Just gotta get those reps in, better to do dozens and dozens of small studies at first to really get comfortable with color mixing
@harryainsworth6923
@harryainsworth6923 Год назад
@@patrickokra hey patrick, ive been doing colour studies the last 2 weeks, since im on uni break, about 8x8, using sight size, how would u recommend transitioning from these small colour studies, to larger, full size studies?

What a great video, I really dig the way you explain the process of the mastercopy. I'd love to try a portrait out, do you have any recommendations for a first try on a mastercopy of Sargents? I've never done a portrait and I am new to painting still.
@patrickokra
@patrickokra Год назад
Pick something you want to have in your studio, like if you have any of your own favorites from him! It might be a really good idea to pick one of Sargent’s early portraits that were “unfinished”, those would be a good lesson in simplifying when painting
