I'm confused. Covering the hair shows you are married but to anyone the wigs look so like they're you're real hair that the symbolism seems lost. Replacing your hair with another woman's hair. Or is it that the symbolism is between yourself and your husband?
@SonyasPrep
@SonyasPrep 2 года назад
Exactly!! The covering of hair is meant to be a symbol for the woman herself and not for anyone else. Just as a kippah is a sign for each man that there is Gd above him- it’s not there to show the world that he is Jewish; but serves as a reminder to each man for himself. Hope I explained well.

When I was in elementary school in the 1950's we girls had to cover our head every time we stepped into a church. I thought the Catholic church removed that rule 🤔. Anyway, I've long left the Catholic church, but I've noticed women walking into church on Sunday without head coverings.

I am curious. To me it doesn’t make a sense to wear a wig that’s replicate your own hair or similar. It does make sense to me to cover with a scarf or a hat. No body would know that you actually wearing the wig. So another Jewish men might be confused of your marital status. Isn’t that the main reason why to wear the head covering ? I am just curious, not judging….

I have recently started covering my hair from time to time, I'm not culturally required to do it, it's simply a practicality. I have very fine hair, and there are days where it looks awful, so a headscarf has been my saving grace. Head covering can be really beautiful and I respect anyone that does it everyday and hope anyone that covers their hair/head can feel beautiful and good about themselves when wearing it❤

The last few months I have been wearing scarves and beanies too, but not for religious reasons. I had a pretty good head of hair, but because of an illness, most of my hair fell out. Peachy, I have the Nordic/Slavic hair type, too, and used to wear a head scarf sometimes, just because I liked the way it felt, and it made up for bad hair days. Where I live it is not a cultural requirement to wear a head covering, and with this hair type, one can easily overheat. I just wanted to share a tip on a hair product I just found and enjoy, because I know the stress from trying to make thin hair look pretty. It is an affordable dry shampoo spray, with volume effect. It really pumps up the hair to look more like "normal" hair, and prevents the wear from over washing. Haven't tried it under head covering yet, but after removing the scarf, the spray can be used to freshen up and de-flatten. It's called batiste instant hair refresh, heavenly volume. I am just a user, and not associated with the product.

I wish I had seen this video four years ago when I lost a lot of my hair due to complications from cancer combined with the stress and shock to my system from anesthesia (twice in a months time) and medications. What hair I had was so severely damaged that my only option was to chop it off and wear a wig. Unfortunately the one I got through a cancer support group wasn't flattering in style or color, but it was the only longer one they had. I am Apostolic Pentecostal, so going with a short wig wasn't an option. Eventually my hair grew back enough and was healthy enough that I could wear scarves, but I struggled with how to tie them so they didn't look too "old lady". By the grace of God I am cancer free now and my hair is down to my bra, longer and thicker than it's been since I was little.

I know many married Jewish women and none of them cover their hair. I don't understand why you would wear a wig, if you have your own natural hair. What is the head covering for? I'm a non denominational Christian woman and have been thinking a lot about covering of the hair, lately. The Bible does say that a woman who prays without her head covered has dishonored her head, it also says we are to pray without ceasing. I have been praying about this and think I may start covering, always.
@libbyhicks7549
@libbyhicks7549 Год назад
And that is just the problem with religion, it is a divisive concept. Women wear head coverings in most cultures all over the world for very practical reasons like hygiene, saving water, saving time, having extra cloth for use while on the move..ect. The institutions are very wise to turn an extremely common habit of human females into a religious social tradition. This is a good way to get people used to following orders. Find something that they do already and make it a signal for your group.

It's actually only in really recent years that women stopped doing it in Western countries. Even in the 50's women were wearing scarfs, they just said it was fashionable, also the history of hats. It says in the bible if wearing the head covering becomes controversial and destracts from the gospel to do away with the tradition which is probably what happened with the rise of feminism, but nowadays there's no reason not to do it, if it's done of your own free will and personal dedication to G-d.

On the observation that many Jewish women do not cover their heads, you are absolutely correct. Depending on your affiliation, the observance is different. You are correct that women in the Reform movement don't usually cover heads. But interestingly, I do see more and more women covering their heads in my Reform temple during services. I am always interested in how people observe traditions and rituals to express their spirituality. I like listening to people's life stories and how they live out their beliefs.

You did an awesome job representing tichels. My collection is much smaller, but I do have a few I truly love the look of and I wear those the most. Like you, I haven’t been able to master the ‘poof’ bonnet, it just hasn’t worked for me. I prefer to use my bun form for my volume in the back. Now you just need to show us where you got that beautiful necklace! It’s obviously your signature piece. I think it’s gorgeous, but you’ve never shown us a closer view of it. I bounce between my Mom necklace from Alef Bet, which has the Magen David as the “o” and a tree of life necklace I own. I don’t know which would be my ‘signature’ piece. Hehehe

I don't understand... isn't the point or purpose for covering one's hair to maintain modesty? Not to draw attention to oneself? Most women have lovely hair (it is our 'glory' and supposed to be saved for only our husbands) and covering it A: means one is married ie: taken & not available & sacred and B: to maintain modesty as a wife & mother in the community & abroad. What is the point of wearing a wig that mimics the very hair you're trying to cover when it's not modest in the first place because THAT'S WHY you're told to cover it? And why would an orthodox woman trying to maintain modesty EVER wear something like what is pictured in that shop when they all CLEARLY represent ANYTHING but modesty. NO DOUBT, a man walking down the street seeing a woman in one of those long, OVERTLY SEXY wigs, would have a far harder time keeping his thoughts from straying than seeing a woman in a plain headscarf. I just don't understand the many hypocrisies of Judaism, especially those that tout themselves as 'Orthodox' and this is one of the biggest. This is a serious question & not a judgment. I simply don't understand the seeming duplicity.

I grew up also in a religion where women’s hair was covered with a scarf or weird looking hat. They also dressed in really ugly dresses (Mennonite). Whereas the men wore clothes that didn’t set them apart at all. Thank God, my parents moved away from that whole stuck in the Middle Ages way of thinking. But there was an honesty about it, because the life was about serving God simply, without adornment, taking the focus off of worldly things like looks. Which in this day and age is refreshing. But by buying wigs that are gorgeous, but expensive and put the focus back on looks(let’s face it, wigs can make a woman look much younger and beautiful) what is being accomplished? No-one seeing a long haired wig is going to think, oh this woman is married, she’s off the market, I won’t look and lust. And if it’s just a commitment between the husband and wife….he knows it’s an empty gesture, he knows the truth!!!!! It’s disingenuous and it’s this kind of hypocrisy that turns people off of “religion”.

I appreciate it so much that you shared such a personal tradition in such a public place. You and your personality are so beautiful and you honestly look beautiful in all of the head wear that you put on. What I don’t understand though is when you cover your head with such a beautiful wig that often times might look better than your own hair it seems like sort of a “cheat” In that strangers might see a more beautiful head of hair than your husband sees when you take the wig off. I would love it if you would address this question.

If covering your hair is symbolic of marriage, shouldn't it be sacred? I'm sorry and I mean no disrespect, but wearing a wig seems to me like taking off your wedding ring; it's counterproductive to your claim because other men can't tell the difference. Obviously your followers can't either. So in essence, you are misrepresenting the whole point of covering your hair. Any man can look at you and assume you're single and looking. How would they know the difference? You don't look like a jewish woman with the wigs. I think if you are going to cover your hair then cover it so it's obvious that it's covered. Otherwise what is the point?? LOL! Cover your hair with more hair?? May as well take off your wedding ring. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. You are cheating. Isn't long hair the reason the sons of God fell to earth and disobeyed God by taking wives of the daughters of men? Bc of their beautiful hair. JS.

There's really no point in covering your hair. Are you ashamed of your own hair? Or are you bold? A nice wedding ring is just about right and enough to show that you are married. Otherwise it's nobody's business if you're married or not. It's your private lift. Why putting out a sign constantly that you're married. Isn't it enough to be happily married? It must be very inconvenient to wear a wig all the time. And it's unhealthy, too as your head skin cannot breath under it. So pls, don't advertise it and put unneccesary stress on other young women!

I am a Messianic Jewish fellow. I've never understood women covering their hair with wigs because their image remains the same. There is no obvious sign of marriage when wearing a wig because they look real and offer the message that the woman isn't married. Wigs are deceptive and long ago would've been considered absurd. I'm not Orthodox with beliefs.

I assume in times of Moses, it was probably not only covering your hair but including your neck and breasts, not wearing tight clothes etc. The meaning of modesty must have been lost in time and there is only the marriage aspect and symbolism stayed. It doesn't make any sense to me when a married woman covers something and a virgin doesn't, if you think about it, it should have been vice versa. The wig doesn't make sense too, it isn't yours but in the end you are showing off another woman's hair.
