I have been asked a lot about how I process my black and white images for my Instagram. In this video I show you the basic technique I use, using curves and HSL sliders within the Darkroom app, right on my iPhone. I will also show you how to get similar results on Snapseed for you Android users. You can also take these tips and use them high end editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop.
If you found it helpful, share it on.

A few of you have jumped on and pointed out that if you shoot in RAW, even if you are shooting BW you will retain all the colour info. Of course you're right, and I hope these tips help you. I think the question came from an Instagrammer who is likely shooting in jpg, so the answer is geared towards those who don't shoot RAW for Instagram. I'm actually one of them. I only have a 16GB iPhone which always seems to be too full, so shooting and editing jpg from my X100 is a workflow which works well for me. RAW is saved for my professional work.

On the fuji x (don't own the others) you can do this in-camera. Of course the By or Br and Acros filter modes. But also, you can set an extreme white balance which is taken into bw. Even custom balance of coloured objects and the wb shifts to extremes. This way is more control obviously but I got into that learning about 'ortho' film and gives some effects whilst shooting. Maybe I will add RAW and try this too. Good thing about that is don't even need a RAW converter, I can export via camera to default settings too.
@seantuck
@seantuck 4 года назад
But if you apply it in camera you are just using an onboard preset which will work for some images and not for others. Editing custom in post means you have a ton more control.

Hey Sean! Excellent info! You're fascinated by cine so you probably know this... You mentioned that they used to use colour filters in black n white photography. Back in the Black & White MOVIE days, they used to use red filters in order to mimic NIGHTTIME scenes while actually shooting during daytime. This allowed actors and crew to still see what the heck they were doing AND to NOT have the film end up too grainy. John Ford used this technique a lot in his B&W westerns. So, with playing with red sliders AND exposure, one can mimic (a bit) nighttime shots taken during daytime. This process has the name "day for night". (Once they started switching to colour film they scrambled to use new techniques, like using tungsten film in daylight, lowering exposure and using blue filters... but that's a different subject.)
@seantuck
@seantuck 4 года назад
If you're interested in that you should check out the recent film ,'The Lighthouse' where they used a cyan filter to turn red hues dark, making the skin grainy and craggy, and turning blood as black as oil. Very clever stuff.

@@seantuck OH MY GAWD, Sean... I'd seen the trailer last fall and when I realized that Defoe was the dark face (SO ortho!) I was staring at I thought "I've GOT to see this" but then before I knew it a few months had passed and COVID happened! Welp... sure enough, I've GOT to find it and watch it!!! I LOVE old Hollywood hard, incandescent lighting. And, looking at the trailer again NOW, you're right... the tones, the grain and the ortho look are gorgeous! BTW... google the heck out of "Saturday Night at the Movies" hosted by "Elwy Yost". This is what I watched every Saturday all through my impressionable teens. When other people shy away from "old, boring, colourless Black & White" I'll be there! I grew up with "A Christmas Carol" (Alastair Sim version) in B&W. When the colourized version came along, I HAD to turn down the colour in order to watch it! LOL Cheers!

Really enjoying Sean's tutorials, very clear and concise explanations. I am looking to move on from iPhone photography to something that offers more opportunity for control and creativity. To that end have recently bought a GR3 which I am gradually (and I mean gradually) getting to grips with via RU-vid clips, especially Sean's. Any opinions on whether I should shoot RAW from the off or start out with JPEG and move to RAW as my abilities with the GR3 (hopefully) improve?

Hello, I am curious about one thing. How do you edit your images(colour and BW) so that they have that clean look. It is hard to describe, but they look so crystal clear and sharp. Amazing.
@JezLerman
@JezLerman 6 лет назад
Cool. Now let's apply the same edit across multiple images, something Snapseed can't do (at least last time I looked). I'm not talking applying a preset on a one-by-one image basis. I mean applying the finished edit across tens or hundreds with a single mouse click, as we can do in Lightroom, X3 etc.

I'd do very little to them. But PS and LR convert the raw file straight to colour and a never seem to be able to recreate what the camera did.

Hi Sean, Excellent video man, great tips and simple to follow. Do you predominately shoot JPEG on your X100F? I shoot JPEG + RAW but my Jpegs are usually B&W with one of the colour filters or for colour I default to Classic Chrome, would you suggest Standard JPEG instead of the other colour profiles for editing like this?
@seantuck
@seantuck 7 лет назад
+Michael Falkous if you shoot RAW as well then it doesn't matter because the RAW file will collect the colour info for you. Knock yourself out with the jpgs then.
@mjfalcon007
@mjfalcon007 7 лет назад
Sean Tucker Hi Sean, I didn't mean to come across arrogant or anything like that, so I apologise if that was the way it was interpreted. I am just trying to understand the concept of editing on my phone as I have always used Lightroom regardless of where the photos end up but I am interested in pursuing your approach for IG. What I am trying to find out is do you shoot in Standard JPEG for your phone edits? (No other colour presets) also my understanding is that the iPhone cannot read RAW files do you know if that is correct?
@seantuck
@seantuck 7 лет назад
Michael Falkous no offence taken. I shoot with the standard colour preset (Provia) on the original x100 (not the F). iPhone and some apps can read RAW, but I chose not to shoot RAW to save space on my phone when importing.

Interestingly, I believe that B&W imagery AUTOMATICALLY invokes in the brain a sense that "THIS is ACTUALLY photographic ART" that we don't get automatically from a colour image. I would LOVE to get my hands on a "Leica M Monochrom" which has no RGB coloured-filter-dot array over the sensor.

Thanks for your tutorial, but that's not really B&W photography. You make it look like an afterthought. Black & White means to work with light, darkness, textures and filters right from the start. Whether you use a film, DSLR or a mirrorless camera (the second shows the final result in real time) you should "see" the world in B&W. I know most digital cameras let you shoot B&W images only in jpg (Raw will always contain color information unless you use an overpriced Leica Monochrome), jpgs are good enough for social media. Shooting directly in B&W is way more challenging as it is quite easy to get overblown highlights, but when done properly gives you such organic images that overprocessed images created by adjusting the color channels (RGB) cannot match.

You can come up with some very strange, unwanted edge effects by taking blue down. It can result in a silarized edges look. You have to view at 100% to see it. I wish this didn't happen as I almost always darken down skies in my landscape and architectural work.
