I have been able to do a zero based budget beautifully electronically for a little over a year now. I have a line item for a $20 buffer each pay. So roughly $40 a month. Right now I still have that $80 sitting in there besides bills and also carry over from previous month to cover bills, variable expenses, etc. LOVE budgeting. It's a semi passion. I have no friends or family who share this passion with me. LOL

Also important to do a new budget every month and include sinking funds (aka reserves) where you allocate a portion of your monthly income over time to cover larger future expenses such as buying a new car, replacing major appliances, vacations, etc...especially helpful when your take-home pay varies a lot each month.
@Erin-rg3dw

I appreciate the reminder to include smaller, more oddball items in the budget, like gifts for friends and something for kids. Having those factored in means you don't panic when they come up because you have nothing left, and that you don't feel guilty for spending it because that's what it's there for.

I have drank the Ramsey Koolaide twice now (hopefully it sticks this time lol). I have 2 thoughts here: 1. What is a good "roll-over amount" or "buffer"? 2. The frustraiting thing for me is no matter who is giving the budgeting advice the numbers are to hypothetical. Nobody I know is only paying $1000 in rent and $400 on food these days. I get it every budget and secinerio is different and this is just an example, BUT using real life numbers isn't as simple in my experience.

I agree..around me if you don’t want to live in the hood and in a decent neighborhood you will be paying at least $2k for a studio apartment, but with food I spend $300 a month for the basic food for the month, it’s doable
@ThatBeardedVeteran
@ThatBeardedVeteran Год назад
@Sarah S. yeah that is basically my point that there is always at least 1 unrealistic number to make it work in the example, or they leave something out like child care.

I agree teaching/showing people how to budget is a great idea. It would be helpful for the amount of the expenses to be more realistic and the math to be correct. This is is not a zero based budget, it's -$100. Income of $4700 and expenses of $4800. Oops!

A zero based budget is different to all cash. All cash to me means you spend physical money.
@Singlerose55

That's what I was thinking. I'm a server so all my money is cash. I save all my tips for the month then I budget it put into envelopes. The little paycheck I have goes to my holiday/ savings. I do a monthly deposit of cash for bills and only spend cash (the change goes to my son's savings)....I doordash for my gas and car payments.

This is soo interesting for an european to watch! My husband and I have done a zero budget for over 25 years. The numbers differs, gas is way more expensiv for us & rent way less expensiv. We both love budgeting and I can plan for hours and hours where my own spending money goes. Who will I give extra presents to( grandchildren) or treat for lunch/dinner (friends & family) or send off for a well deserved treat (grown children) while I treat my grandchildren and me to a nice evening with storytelling and good food! This is for me the essense of budgeting; to get the most walue out of your short stay on this earth! And also try to help those less fortunat to survive ( Ukraine at the moment) This is what I hear you are trying to tell people when you help them and I love listening to you! Brilliant work 👌

How do you use every dollar if you don’t have a paycheck? For example, you are an entrepreneur with a monthly income that is different every month.
@mikellyartisan1384
@mikellyartisan1384 Год назад
You can change the income amount every month or even throughout the month. I have a regular income but I make extra money on the side. When I make extra money, I just add it as a separate income line to my Every Dollar app and just allocate the money from there.

Write all your expenses smallest to largest. You may have to look at 3-4 months of writing everything down before you can really see what's happening in your budget. You can either use a notebook or find a budgeting book or use a budgeting tool on your phone. The biggest thing is writing everything down.

When did the baby step change? It used to be giving was after you had a fully funded emergency fund and after you took care of your 4 walls, what change? How you suppose to give if you are broke? makes no sense.
@naomirachel9161
@naomirachel9161 Год назад
This has never been the baby steps. 4 walls come before saving the initial $1000 emergency fund. 4 walls is the absolute basics and really only a concern for people in dire situations, at risk of homelessness etc. after 4 walls are taken care of then you save $1000 emergency fund. While you’re paying off debt in baby step 2 the Ramsey suggestion is to continue giving 10%. When you finish with debt, build your fully funded emergency fund-- all while giving. Hope this helps clarify
@MR3DDev
@MR3DDev Год назад
@@naomirachel9161 this makes more sense, I guess this is where I differ from Ramsay, you need to finish baby step 2 before you even think of giving. Put your oxygen mask first before helping others.
@username9999
@username9999 Год назад
After baby step 3 you can give "generously." Before that it's just giving because giving is good for your health.

I recently completed FPU and I'm doing my first budget for April. In the nearly 2.5 months the class ran, I never did one even though I was paying my own bills and getting my own prescriptions which I already did prior to FPU. The ONLY thing that changed was that I started paying my own bills which are only for insurance and the occasional CC bill which I pay off every time I use it so there's no interest AKA: debt.

10% to charity is too much. Maybe 5%. $150 family fun budget won’t even get you to a ballgame, or put the extra toward your house fund. It’s ok to put your family first.
@Haktic
@Haktic Год назад
She did 10% because the bible calls us to tithe 10%, and it's situational, but putting my family first does not mean spending money that would jeopardize us in the future.
@username9999
@username9999 Год назад
Then don't go to a ball game. There are plenty of things to do that don't cost $150 dollars. I spent $40 to take my child roller skating 3 times last month. Or $100 to go x-c skiing. We had a lot more fun moving our bodies than watching other people play a game.
@Nobody2day553
@Nobody2day553 Год назад
I agree. If you're in debt and/or don't have a full emergency fund, take that 10% and put towards your goal. There's absolutely no reason to be broke and donating money... that's the epitome of "spending money like you're in congress". Now if you're on baby step 4567 and you want to waste your money by donating to a church, go right ahead. Some people need to learn how to put their family above "Jesus"... after all, he's nothing but a fictional character.
@paulinoaz
