How I Cured My SIBO "IBS" (+Gastritis, Duodenitis, NAFLD, & POTS) *w/ Brain Fog*

FAQs & Stuff I forgot to say:
NAFLD: If you have liver disease be aware of this relationship. My GP found on ultrasound that I had NAFLD along the way. It was very strange because I had low BMI and no good reason for it. A recent ultrasound shows it is gone now. The relationship with SIBO is known, linked below. Essentially, the SIBO bacteria create toxins that enter the bloodstream, go to the liver and mess it up.
Magnesium Oxide. In retrospect after this video, I realized I should have mentioned this. I took Oxy-Powder for about a week as my first attempt to work on motility. It can be used to clear out your GI (colonoscopy prep sometimes uses magnesium citrate). I moved on because it made me sleepy. I do wonder now if cleaning out my GI with this first could have helped my odds of responding to motility pro. It seems possible, so I want to add this note here.
Fiber: Unfortunately, we cannot rely on fiber for motility aid. This confuses a lot of SIBO patients. Fiber is a chain of non-digestible carbs that the bacteria can eat. They feast on it and it makes us worse. So don't take fiber supplements. Some people try Miralax since it is basically a plastic instead, but at the end of the day consider that no matter the moisture content of your digesting food, it's not going anywhere because the MMC's aren't working. So it's not really a fix.
If you have D Lactic Acidosis be aware that you can modulate your symptoms by limiting sugars and simple carbs. The more readily available food is for the bacteria, the faster they will produce D Lactate and overload your system. You gotta cure the sibo to get rid of it, but this can help you manage your life en route.
The most popular small bowel MMC tools I have seen used in the SIBO community are:
Ortho Molecular Products Motility Pro (What I used)
MotilPro
SIBO-MMC
Iberogast Advanced (Be aware the original Iberogast had liver risks)
For a while I tried Triphala after meals. I don't think it's strong enough to fix things on its own, but it does give me feelings of relief if I ever feel like I ate a meal that's slowing me down. Don't take triphala if pregnant.
Lifestyle tips:
Reducing anxiety is very important. Stress is known to impair MMC.
Foot massages are surprisingly effective at stimulating small bowel MMC.
Beware common anxiety inputs: social media & news. Seriously consider taking a 1 week break from all screens outside of work and see if it meaningfully influences your stress levels / motility.
Cardio exercise is good if possible. Based on my experience swimming is the most effective exercise to help us - it is cardio that gets things moving, the buoyant action makes things move, and it is very stress relieving especially if there's a hot tub afterward.
Don't snack at night. It resets your MMC clock. Give yourself dinner to breakfast as a solid fasting period if possible, that's lots of time for MMC's. Fats delay MMC more than any other form of food.
Gastritis people: I used DGL to speed up the healing of my stomach lining once my MMC was working again. It has worked well for myself and others I personally know for gastritis. It has a lot of drug interactions though, so check on that.
Magnesium and Zinc deficiencies are common in small bowel diseases that limit absorption. Low mag can lead to muscle spasms and stress/anxiety, low zinc can lead to hair loss.
A few months past this video I no longer needed any prokinetics, a MMC-focused lifestyle was enough to keep me functioning well.

Note: I actually had both Methane and Hydrogen. The test my GI ordered at the time used flawed logic to consider me not positive for methane. Any measurement =>10ppm for methane during the entire 180 min duration is considered positive by the north american consensus. I had 12 in my upper and 17 in my lower GI. Here was my test result: imgur.com/a/ESdnF8S Don't eat sugar substitutes, they can impair MMC! www.reddit.com/r/SIBO/comments/16ehoz1/i_am_concerned_about_stevia_and_sibo/ After 1,000 comments here and more on reddit, just about every imaginable question has been asked. Your best bet for a quick answer beyond the video material is just to read through what's discussed in the video notes and comments. Honest to god, I can't thank you enough for posting your video and for the follow up notes. I've been dealing with chronic constipation for years to the point that none of my prior tricks would work any more (GI Dr after every test she could give me, "Hey, you JUST have IBS-C and will simply have to deal with it the rest of your life!"; recent (2nd) diagnosis of SIBO/methane and h-pylori and gastritis; thousands of dollars of supplements and prescriptions. A few days ago, I started xifaxin/neomycin becacuse I demanded it and felt so much better within 2 days and quickly dropped 6 pounds of bloat and will focus hard on the artichoke and MotilPro. It's so amazing to watch your video and finally feel like I'm talking to a real person who gets it. The medical gaslighting I've gotten has really blown my mind the past few years. A blessing on you for sharing your story and insights!!

@@patrickjuan6057 Hi there. Well, I couldn't get the artichoke extract or ginger MotilPro to work for me. The xifaxin and neomycin made me really recover from the SIBO in my opinion. After a few days, I said to myself, "I got my body back and I got my life back." But the constipation was still terrible. A new GI told me to keep an accurate daily log of each thing I do to help my constipation (drink 2 liters of water, moderate exercise, additional supplements, enema, whatever). He told me about dulcolax, which none of the other GIs had ever mentioned. That stuff works incredibly well for me now, but I find I am almost experimenting most days with what I use. It is an over the counter laxative, very tiny pill. You have to be careful and start off with just one because it can give distressing intestinal cramps at first. I have slow transit, so it takes 6-8 hours to click in. So, now I take one at bedtime or occasionally 2. If I don't poop in the morning, I take 1 more dulcolax around 11 am. If that doesn't work in a few hours, I'll do a Fleet enema. (Some days, I will take the 1 dulcolax at night, but take 1 tsp of vitamin c powder in water in the morning with 400 mg magnesium oxide. I've learned my body needs me to be constantly changing things around.) So far, this is working great. I also take a B2 pill and a omega3 pill. It's working so much better now. Good luck to you.

@@bettytsegaye4165 Every person is different and has different needs to regaining their health. I think that this video is somewhat deceiving viewers, in that the creator of the video makes it seem that all he had to do from the beginning was take the motility activator. However, he did many steps before the motility activator! My interpretation is that the motility activator was the final needed step, but the steps prior to this were extremely important as well. I am not accusing him of purposefully deceptive. With all due respect, he is not a health practitioner, but a very bright person who has found something that helped him. However, just using a motility activator is not going to fix everything that causes SIBO in every case in my professional opinion. With SIBO - #1 avoid sugars and excess carbs. #2 treat SIFO (small intestinal fungal overgrowth) if needed #3 eliminate over growth of displaced bacteria (via drugs or herbs) # 4 ensure adequate digestive enzymes and stomach acid levels, #5 improve motility - via proper mind-body interventions, eating in a relaxed environment and motility activators # 6 use appropriate probiotics and prebiotics and postbiotics to repair normal bowel flora levels and integrity of the mucosal barrier. Also the choice of anti-microbial agent depends of the type of SIBO - hydrogen verses methane verses hydrogen sulfide My website www.mdwellnessmd.com

I also put some cloves in the tea ( green tea+cloves is rly good for intestinal lining) and took some griffonia extract before sleep ( this should also help with motility), although the steps in this sentence are prolly not necessary, artichoke+ginger+green/black tea are prolly enough. Dude...this is SO painfully relatable. Especially the part about the brain fog and that constant thought that your life is just over, your're done. I went from finishing a PhD to being barely able to read more than two pages at a time. I had to decline my absolute dream job, the position I've been working for so hard all these years as a PhD student. But my brain just was no longer functioning at all. That being said, I knew exactly that it just HAD to be connected with my worsening digestive issues. What mental strength I could still muster I used fopr research. I went to my doctor, completely desperate, with printed out studies about d-lactic acidosis and how my brain fog possibly relates to gut issues. She told me i was crazy and that i should google less... In the end, I had to take it into my own hands. Which was possible thanks to people like you and thousands of others sharing their experiences online. I'm better now, but frankly, this was the most traumatizing experience of my life.

OMG....you are my hero. I had a really scary case of food poisoning from shrimp some time ago, (blood spewing out of both ends - sorry TMI), serious enough to take me to the emergency and my digestion hasn't been great since then. Apparently you can cause nerve damage to your digestive tract from poisoning - especially in the small bowel. Anyway, recently things have gotten way worse. IBS symptoms and then an almost total blockage. My doctor had me on stool softeners and enemas and nothing was helping. My plan was to go to the emergency today to find out what was happening in there. But very lucky for me, I came across your video last night and went to search for artichoke and ginger supplements. I found some on line but didn't want to wait for delivery as I was so eager for a cure. I phoned a specialist pharmacy in downtown Vancouver, (shout out to Finlandia Natural Pharmacy), and drove down to pick the supplements up this morning. I took one capsule after a meal and things started to churn just as you said they might. I had a movement!!!! Can't tell you how amazing that is!! I think this is going to be the start of continued good health. I was lethargic, my hair was thinning and I was starting to get rashes from the toxicity. I thought I was going to have to have surgery, but I now feel full of hope for the future. THAANNNKKK YYYOOOUUU so much!! For those who are interested, the supplements were by Cyto-Matrix and are called GI-Motility Matrix.

I finally just got a diagnosis for SIBO and I'm on antibiotics. We're heading to CVS now to pickup ginger and artichoke. I hope to god this works. I literally have gone through every single thing you have gone through. I feel like you have been living inside my own body the last 10 years. From the sudden onset of back pain, to buying tons of different mattresses, to the groin tightness and muscle spasms and overall weird body pain and getting the dry-needling done, physical therapist, chiropractors, to being told one leg is shorter than the other, increased urination, years of feeling like I'm being gaslighted by doctors and always being told all your labs are normal when you KNOW the way you are feeling is not normal, to the intense brain fog that comes with feeling like you have a major histamine intolerance or something, to lights and sounds bothering you and just feeling like you're going nuts. Everything he describes feels like it's my same experience for at least the last decade. I’ve spent thousands upon thousands of dollars. I even had a back surgery because the doctors said all the muscle spasms I was having, and the lower back pain were from a herniated disc. Now I’ve been doing all these sibo protocols and diets and antibiotics and antimicrobials. Paying over $3000 to work with a dietician. Who knows what’s even working. Been taking stuff for 3-4 months now. But this video is the first thing that has given me real hope…someone who felt ALL the things I’ve gone through…to the point where it’s like what’s the point of living if the rest of my life is going to be chasing and managing symptoms…but now you say you feel like normal person! I don’t even remember what I felt like before I was always sick with something. I hope there is a light at the end of my tunnel too. This is all so exhausting. 🤞🙏🏻

Like theres so much stuff about things that cause "brain fog", but for me it was so bad it blocks my emotions I could hardly feel anything. It was such a hit to my self confidence as well having slurred speech and poor coordination. Ive always been intelligent and strong, and its like those parts of my identity were largely inhibited. My mind which used to be quick was so slow... Things I used to be great at, I couldnt get a grasp of. I quit video games. I loved running and strength training, but I couldnt connect with my body properly. I would only use some muscles properly, and it would cause strains. Its depressing. I started avoiding people because I just couldnt vibe with anyone, I just felt like a zombie. I couldnt open up to people because I was always in discomfort. Huge thanks to the guy who made this video. I've commented here before, this video was so helpful, I'm going to share what I did to make a dramatic difference. In addition to removing dairy, most breads & sugary food from my diet. Doing regular cardio to make my body flex. I added Green smoothies consisting of: Kale, lemon, avocado, carrots, cucumber & tomato. This reduced my torso inflammation and makes everything flow smoothly. I think there is an antibacterial component probably from the Kale & lemon. Using a Vitamix, a pitcher full can be consumed over 72 hours, after 72 hours it tastes a little funky. After doing this for a few weeks (exercise + diet change). For the first 30-35 days I just felt less torso discomfort after 35 days I could see major benefit in my over-all health. My solution isn't cheap and its a daily life-style change but the benefits have been shockingly positive. I added regular basic Magnesium that I got from amazon after 2 months and I feel better than I have in 20 years.

The transcript you provided is a detailed personal account of someone's journey through chronic illness, specifically focusing on gastrointestinal issues like SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and related conditions. Here are the key takeaways: 1. **Chronic Illness and Diagnosis**: The speaker describes the frustration and long journey many people with chronic illnesses face, particularly the difficulty of obtaining an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. 2. **Experience with SIBO**: SIBO is highlighted as a common but often overlooked cause of IBS, with the speaker noting that up to 80% of IBS cases may be due to SIBO. SIBO is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, which disrupts normal digestion and can cause a variety of symptoms. 3. **Impact of SIBO on Life**: The speaker shares the significant impact SIBO had on their life, including severe symptoms such as brain fog (specifically D-lactic acidosis), back pain, gastrointestinal pain, and even conditions like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). These symptoms were debilitating and affected their daily functioning and quality of life. 4. **Treatment Challenges**: The speaker discusses the challenges of treating SIBO, including the limitations of conventional medicine. They highlight the lack of attention given to the small intestine in medical practice, leading to a scarcity of effective treatments specifically targeting SIBO. 5. **Experience with Various Treatments**: The speaker tried multiple treatments, including antibiotics like Rifaximin (Xifaxan) and herbal supplements, but found that while these offered temporary relief, they did not provide a lasting solution. They emphasize the importance of treating the root cause, particularly by improving motility in the small intestine. 6. **Importance of Motility**: Improving the migrating motor complex (MMC), which moves food through the small intestine, is identified as key to treating SIBO. The speaker found success with natural supplements like ginger and artichoke extract, which helped restore normal motility and ultimately led to significant improvement. 7. **Frustration with Healthcare System**: The speaker expresses frustration with the healthcare system, particularly with doctors who are not familiar with SIBO or who dismiss patients' symptoms as stress-related without providing effective solutions. 8. **Role of Online Communities**: Online communities, such as Reddit, are praised as valuable resources for finding information and support when dealing with chronic conditions like SIBO. The speaker credits these communities with helping them discover treatments and understand their condition better. 9. **Call to Action**: The speaker urges others who might be suffering from similar conditions to investigate SIBO as a potential cause, emphasizing that it is a common but underdiagnosed issue. They hope to raise awareness and provide guidance to others based on their own experiences. 10. **Holistic Approach to Recovery**: The speaker suggests a holistic approach to managing and recovering from SIBO, which includes improving gut motility, reducing stress, careful dietary management, and possibly using supplements or medications as needed. Overall, the transcript is an in-depth exploration of living with and managing a chronic gastrointestinal condition, with a focus on the importance of understanding and treating the underlying causes rather than just the symptoms.

So much trapped gas I would get left arm pain so bad it would feel like my arm fell off. I did PT HIDA Scans, MRIs the whole 9 years to just continue to get worse and got a “no follow up needed” from my GI. Fought tooth and nail for this sibo test and I’m praying I get answers

Took so much effort an persistence and hope to keep trying to actually find someone who understands your symptoms and recognises them. Wanted to give up so many times as people continue to brush it of like “your okay” Most informative thing I’ve seen about SIBO you’ve truly created a fantastic video and needs to be seen way more! I’m literally waiting for my antibiotics and supplements to be delivered along with a 6 week diet plan that was all given to me from my doctor, however now I will 100% leave that on the side and try everything you have said. Your explanation of the brain fog was spot on! I know many people experience a certain level of brain fog with many different diseases. But the SIBO brain fog is seriously next level, it’s so debilitating and so scary when you first get it and don’t know what’s wrong. I’ve never quite been able to explain to people how it feels, besides your head is in a literal puddle of mud, your visual field is cloudy and staticky, and you are disconnected from the world around you. My brain fog was 24/7, maybe got slightly worse after eating but really was just completely relentless. The fog finally lifted this past year, after ruining my life from age 28 until 32. It’s a scary place, and those of us who have gotten out of the fog are so so fortunate. Thank you for sharing your healing journey!

I’ve been praying this week for God to just give me some kind of guidance on what to do. Not even healing. Just some direction. Then I stumble upon your video, and I couldn’t stop watching til the very end. We have differing symptoms, but also many overlapping. I’ve had stomach problems my whole life. Just recently a food sensitivity test came back showing a severe gluten intolerance. I was actually thrilled. I thought THIS must explain EVERYTHING! Well, it’s been one month of veeery strictly gluten free, and zero improvement. And so I’ve slowly been cutting more and more foods out of my diet. I’m currently gluten, dairy, egg, raw veggie, sugar, and sweetener free, and very limited grains. I’m still sick, only now I’m also depressed. I’ve been telling my doctors for ages that I feel like I don’t digest fast enough. That things are super sluggish. When I take a bottle of magnesium citrate, which is supposed to work in less than 6 hours, it takes 18 hours to actually do its thing. I’ve always struggled with constipation, gas, and bloating (and a host of others, of course). They told the classic IBS, gastritis, etc. My naturopath was the only one who entertained SIBO, but even she just put me on an herbal antibacterial supplement and sent me on my way. I’ve also had POTS since early teens. Y’know, probably shortly after around the time I started having stomach issues. I’ve ordered both triphala and a ginger/artichoke motility aid, they arrive next Tuesday. I’m praying so fervently that this will actually be the answer to my 15+ years of issues. I’ve spent so much money this year alone on doctors appointments, tests, drugs, supplements, you name it. I hope I’ve finally found the solution.

Same thing here, man. I just woke up one morning and couldn't poop after a night of heavy drinking at a Christmas party. I've never had that problem my entire life. Everything else pretty much spiraled downhill from there and lead into interstitial cystitis like symptoms which are equally as debilitating on another front. I have had one round of rifaxin and neomyacin for 14 days. I felt great on that and was able to eat most everything again. I did have what felt like indigestion like symptoms while on the combo and my constipation symptoms returned just a few days after the end of that medication, which lends itself to MMC dysfunction from what I've watched here and read on my own. I have tried some of the OTC motility aids, but they don't offer much relief. I may have to move up to the prescription strength motegrity if I can get my general care practitioner to write a PA form for it so that my insurance covers it.

You are 100% right. Fixing SIBO is not killing microbes. It is restoring motility. Exercise and lower stress are key, much more than any motility activators. Fixing the stomach lining is a bit more difficult, some people have thin lining and there are not too many things you can do about it. You have to give up on certain foods/spice.

I’ve spent this weekend at the end of my rope. Dealing with 12 months of chronic symptoms, but none of the stomach pain or diarrhoea. Test revealed SIBO (20H and 37M) but doc saw mold and decided to treat that first. For 9 months my mmc has been impaired and not a single doctor that I’ve seen (I’m up to the 9th one as of this month) has actually done anything about it, aside from telling me to drink water and eat some chia seeds :( Your experience was so familiar it made me tear up dude, it seems it really is up to us if we actually want to heal. I’ve spent every waking moment researching how to heal and fill in the gaps that these experts done seem to care about. One day I’ll be able to tell me story much like you. Mostly, I want to thank you for making the effort to put this out there man. Not just for telling your story, but offering sincere insight as well. Even a glimmer of hope is sometimes enough to the light the path home, especially when things seem darkest.

So multifaceted views! There were so many different things brought up from so many angles, aspects and different perspectives. I’ve already seen the video 4 times and I can tell that keep hearing again something new and interesting and important and relevant to my own situation. In my case it was a food poisoning incident that triggered the same cascade of issues you described. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤

I can’t wait to see if this works for me. My story is exactly like yours except “drunk” like feeling. However been dianosed with sibo and hyrodgen positive bacteria. i was prescribed the same antibiotics like yours. I’m here, past 3 years getting the symptoms over again. If this works… you will be my savior…😢🎉

Through all of this, you are able to recount these details for over an hour. You are a champion and you are helping a lot of people. I am here because I coach people on nutrition, weight loss, and gut biome is a big part of the equation. Thank you!

I am an acupuncturist and have recommended so many patients to get a Sibo test done. So helpful to rule it out. Great video. Will share it.

Thank you for posting this. I’ve struggled with sibo since 2014 when I had undiagnosed celiac for years, and I wasn’t able to get referred to a GI until last year because they continued to say it was ibs, gastritis, and a hiatal hernia. My breath test was positive for hydrogen and methane sibo. Last year, I ended up shadowing my GI doctor during nursing school and it put everything into perspective as to why I (along with several others) have not been treated. He didn’t know what to do, so he put in a referral to Stanford. I’ve developed an autoimmune disease and several GI issues as well as joint pain, neuropathy, weight loss, anxiety, etc…..so watching this video was just what I needed to hear. You give me hope.

That is a long, difficult journey with a lot of investment. I want you to be aware of the info in my pinned comment. Methane (IMO) has an added challenge beyond what I had to deal with because it causes the colon to spasm. Treating the upper GI must be balanced with addressing the colon dysbiosis together, because fixing one without the other won't work. My info is valuable for the stomach and small intestine, but MMC doesn't govern the colon. You will have to experiment further to find what restores that organ simultaneously.

@@CC-gv6us yeah I was a bit disappointed today. I went to UC Davis in Elk Grove, Ca to a GI who claimed in her profile to specialize in ibs/sibo. I knew she didn’t want to treat the sibo when she tried to offer every laxative you could only imagine, along with ppi’s. I told her about all the success stories I’ve heard of people curing their sibo and healing their gerd or other gastro problems, but she didn’t agree that there was a connection. She told me that I should just stick to my appointment in Stanford because they have more knowledge about sibo. I did hear her say several times though that this is something they’re still trying to learn about. It seems like in the last 10 years no matter who I’ve seen for help either they don’t know how to help, or they don’t want to, and that’s only caused me to develop more gut problems along the way and more autoimmune diseases. I even told her this all started in 2011 when I took a horrible antibiotic, then I had leaky gut, food sensitivities, which led to dermatitis, then celiac, and then came sibo, but she just didn’t listen. It frustrating and I’m tired.

@@lottaa4822I actually saw the GI at Stanford who is also a scientist. He’s been studying SIBO for awhile. During and after my appointment, I knew that I was finally going to receive help. He agreed with all my research about leaky gut and skin problems and how it eventually can cause autoimmune diseases. He wants to treat me with herbs. He spoke of Atrantil and Iberogast as well. We’ll see though. I know before our appointment ended he said that he’s going to help me to where I can eat a lot more foods again one day.

@@jesusmalverde612 I never bought the supplement. I went to a functional dr and got a GI Map test done to see where all my levels were in my gut. I took specific supplements that were custom to me to help get my gut back into some kind of order. Still not perfect but doing what I can

What a genuine man you are - how rare is that these days? This video was an absolute eye opener for me. You share your journey with so much sincerity and I could identify with virtually everything you said. It's also the first time I've laughed in ages, your irony was very witty . Yes totally agree, doctors do gaslight.! And yes so many are just clueless and a no conclusion is so demoralising. Thank you for all of it. First time I've ever watched anything that long and not been tempted to forward. Very valuable and thorough. A huge heartfelt thank you
