Thank you. I’m 64 and in the last 2 1/2 years I have been fortunate enough to have my first 3 grand babies, 2 boys and a little girl. I suffer severely with cramping as I haven’t stopped crocheting during that time. Your video really helped me. I thought it was because I was old. Thank you so much 💜

Very informative Jayda! Love your enthusiasm! I don't cramp up much but I think it's a great idea to stop and stretch. Putting down the crochet to do some housework? I'm thinking, no! Ha ha! A walk yes, housework no 😂Thanks for another great tutorial! I feel energized just watching you!

I know you made this vid a few years ago but what great luck that I came across it today. Just last weekend I experienced hand cramping from too much crocheting in one day and I haven’t picked up my hook since. I went thru the exercises with you and am now ready (and excited!) to get back to it today! I appreciate that you incorporated this type of information on your channel. Thanks Jayda🙂

I found this really helpful, a lot of people forget to stretch before doing a task or when they are cramping, sometimes they don’t even remember how too. Although I heard that some people wear something like a cold compress gloves while crocheting but I don’t remember exactly what it was 🤔

Thank you, Jayda!!! I worked on five blankets for my grandkids over a three month period and now am experiencing tingling and burning in my hands. It’s so bad it wakes me up at night. I definitely don’t want medicine or surgery unless it becomes necessary. These exercises should help. Plus, I definitely am not crocheting right now. That’s so hard. Thank you again!!!

Good video. Crocheting is very much sedentary like any other 9-5 desk job, which takes a real toll on the body, so it’s crucial to do stretches at the least if not mild excercise as Jayda suggested such as walking. I’m loving this craft, so Jayda, I don’t think I can “stop crocheting” even if it gets crampy. Thanks for the tips and reminders!
@JaydaInStitches

Thank you! Interesting to see how most people would approach it. I have several pre existing conditions so I probably approach my crocheting slightly differently to most. I can't sit for any length of time without moving, I get stiff and sore so have to move regularly. I did notice I was getting a very sore shoulder quite quickly but have found if I position myself with plenty of support pillows under my elbow it really helps. I really can't crochet for too long without giving my hands a break either. Between my EDS and Reynaud's my hands can suffer badly if I'm not careful and have to listen to my body. I've also found using the ergonomic type hooks helpful for my hands. Took a bit of getting used to but worth it :-)
@JaydaInStitches
@JaydaInStitches 7 лет назад
It is really important that we all find what works for us individually! I sit to crochet sometimes, but actually prefer standing (or even walking around), I find that helps with a lot of my stiffness but might not be for everyone :)

Great video! Stretching is so important. Another one you might like to try is when you're doing those windmills one arm at a time, watch your fingertips. That will give you a gentle neck rotation that reaches the muscles from an angle that isn't often reached with other neck exercises. You've inspired me to go take my walk. Walking outside is great exercise for the eyes too as well as for the rest of the body. :)

Another piece of advice that I would like to add is to hold the crochet hook like a pencil instead of in your palm. Almost every vintage and antique pattern/beginners book I've come across teach to hold the hook like a pencil. Since I changed the way I hold the hook I've never had a single cramp or repetitive motion injury.

Sweets great job on this one. Will add one more tip. Don't choke your hook, just let it flow, no need for white knuckles!! lol.. Sorry, have been out of this for a while. Lupus is out of remission, so sore. Love the heart and star pillows. Looks like little Ana will have a set under the Christmas Tree this year... Have a great day!!!!

Hi Val, I hope you're taking care of yourself! And very good tip, we often need to remind ourselves to relax when we're crafting...after all, that's supposed to be the point! LOL

LOL, Unless you are crocheting in a marathon. Thank You, am trying hard, has been a great summer here, nice and cool, only a few days of humidity. I do know better than to take some time and go out and enjoy The old immune system tends to rebel. After a bit living like a vampire is for the birds. This was a great tutorial you did. Am sure this will help a lot of crocheters and knitters!! Hugs for a great week.

I like to get up and fix myself something to drink (hot or cold, depending on the season) when I start cramping during crochet (or at work). Then I try to switch activities if possible, at least briefly. (f.ex., check email, read a book, or do a puzzle (or even walk the dog, weather permitting & if I'm feeling energetic) at home; put files away or scan things at the copier at the office) I like to apply moisturizer to my hands (which counts as massage, if one's doing a thorough job) or an analgesic cream (Aspercreme in situations where people might be bothered by the smell; whatever's on hand otherwise). I have heard good things about arnica gel as a pain reliever; however, I found out the hard way that arnica gel gives my sensitive skin a rash, so I no longer use it.

That's very specific, Chel! Definitely sounds like you're holding yourself tightly (I do that too!). I hope the stretching helps a little :)
