In this video, I talk about why I decided to be an occupational therapist instead of a physical therapist. I share the pro and cons and why you might choose a career in the field of OT. If you want to learn why I think OT is more important than PT, read the link below.

Hey there! I've started watching your videos recently and I really appreciate them. I'm in OT school now and I'm really trying to find my niche in the field. The funny thing is, I was a PT aide before and I actually applied to both OT AND PT schools. I got into OT school so I took it. Im definitely more biomechanically inclined so I'm leaning towards outpatient hand therapy. I think you're right that in many settings there is tons of crossover. I just sincerely hope that I find a setting I truly enjoy. I was just going to ask, are there a fair amount of outpatient jobs for OT? Is it fairly similar to PT in outpatient? Thanks for your videos and keep them coming!

Thanks Corey. I think I have the same story. I got accepted to OT school and just went for it. The OT model isn’t for everyone and that’s why I started out in hands. But now I work in acute care and it’s really not all that different from what PT does in a hospital. As for outpatient most OTs do hands. I think more OTs should try to push themselves to working in sports medicine and other outpatient areas but hands is probably the best fit for you. But also look into ergonomics. Its completely different from outpatient but it’s also different from most OT settings.

Very helpful, thank you! I think OT’s should be able to be in sports too .. don’t know why nobody knows what an OT is, hasn’t the profession been around for quite a bit? I’m interested in ergonomics actually but don’t know much about jobs in the field

It's a bit tricky finding a job in ergonomics, but there are jobs out there. There's also a lot of employers who need an ergonomics consultant to evaluate their employee who is returning to work. In that case you have to start your own business. I'm creating a course on how to get started in office ergonomics. It should be finished in a month.

well PTs take the protectionist approach and prohibit OTs from taking on certain certified professional courses such as Schroth Scoliosis Courses and cupping which is already widely used by other non-PT healthcare professionals.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! I am now in the very challenging state of mind, thinking if I must continue my Amercian Nursing Degree or become PT or OT. I've realized that the nurses in the USA are so unhealthy and stressed out, often they remind me of the patients themselves rather than Medical Professionals. And I understood that standing all day long and administering all these meds (70-90 percents of those meds are very questionable regarding their outcomes with lots of insane adverse effects), plus sitting on the butt all day long and charting, is something that makes me absolutely depressed. I love to move, I love to inspire People. So, after your monologue I chose the OT program, I just want to do something meaningful for the American Society. Thank you and be well!

Thanks for sharing. I agree with you on nursing. It’s very challenging and stressful but some nurses love their job. We all get burned out of everything but OT seems to be a more low stress job with better hours. God bless!

I am between occupational therapy and prosthetist right now. Not sure which one to choose

I would shadow both and try lots of different settings for OT. In some ways OT is similar, but at some point you would have to make a decision. Tough decision. Hope you get it figured out.

I think OTs are suppressed by PTs in their professional development with a lot of courses being exclusively given access to PTs because they also happen to dominate the instructor space within those physical manipulative methods. So not only do they manipulate the patient's MSK but also manipulate the professional development space of other healthcare professionals too in order to protect the private client market

Any ideas on how to fix it? We OTs dont have much of a voice.

The more I’m growing the more I realise that pt/ot continue each other But I’am just a second yr OT student so I dont know

Great insight. I think PT has a specialized approach to gait, ambulation, and strengthening that we as OTs don’t normally see. But we also have a huge contribution for activities that are meaningful.

PT for sure! Many more opportunities to get good paying jobs.

Pay is mostly the same. PT for prestige. OT for more of a variety of jobs
