How I distinguish between Lymphocytes vs Monocytes

This is just a brief video and overview on how to differentiate lymphocytes and monocytes morphologically on a peripheral blood smear. I also included blasts just to compare more of their characteristics.

you say at 6:00 that monocytes "don't care about RBC" impling that they don't wrap around them but that's contradicted by the image at 0:35 ( second from the left). Maybe some clarifications would be nice?

I see what you are saying there, on 00:35 notice how the cytoplasm of the monocyte has a lot of vacuolation (lymphs don't have that) and the color gradient of the cytoplasm is even all through out, it's this dirty greyish blue color. If you go to 03:22 (second from left) this is the atypical lymph cytoplasm that wraps around RBC's, notice how you can see a change in color from a clear cytoplasm closer to the nucleus going into an intense darkening on the edges that touches the RBC. The darkening almost looks like a wrapping motion, but when you look at the 00:35 picture you don't get that gradient, it was just a picture of a mono in a crowded area of the smear surrounded by RBC's, also notice the differences in the nucleus size and shape. I hope that clarifies the difference.

Hi, there is no need for all the question marks and exclamation points I’ll try my best to walk you through it.😁 At 5:57 I was comparing the cytoplasm of the monocyte and the atypical lymph as you will see the atypical lymph on this slide has a lot clearer cytoplasm compared to the mono which is why I said it is more granulated for a lack of a better term, sorry if that confused you. Which part was the point where I said monocytes were agranular so that I can explain that to you as well.

I don’t believe I said monos are agranular but that is not the main distinguishing factor of monos compared to lymphs. See in the world of these cells there are a lot of characteristics you look out for don’t focus too much on one detail. You have to look at the cells as a whole such as the size of the cytoplasm, the coloring and more so the shape and the size of the nucleus. Try to look at more pictures of these cells, to help you distinguish one from the other, this is as much as I can do for you. I hope this helped, goodluck! ❤️
