How I edit videos as an amateur (and how long it takes me) 

Professional Editor here :) I think you are doing a great job!! One thing I would suggest is spend a bit more time on organization within your editor in the front end of your project. For example, create an "audio" bin, create a "footage" bin and any other assets or things you like to use for you vlogs. Once you do that, you can get as detailed as you like, if you use different bins for cameras/drone etc. The next step would be to watch all your clips and as you do, set your I/O points for each clip BEFORE you insert them into the timeline. It may not seem like it, but making your cuts directly on your timeline is probably where a lot of your time is going. Also it may look like you are filming in a log profile? I am not sure if FXP has an internal conversion tool like Davinci Resolve, but I do know you will need to add a conversion lut to Rec 709 from Log in order to utilize the most DNR from your camera. If you use Sony, you can go to their website and download the Log conversion LUT, apply it to your clip and thats when you are ready for creative LUTs :) Hope this was helpful!! These are just haphazard rough ideas. Filter them down as you like. Everyone has their own distinctive workflow. 1. Keywording is one aspect where Final Cut Pro really shines. You can assign a keyword shortcut such as "blooper" and then attach that to a range in a clip with a blooper. Recall later on in the project is now easy. As you go through footage, you can attach a few choice keywords along the way which saves you having to keep a storage at the end of your timeline. 2. There are roughly two ways to edit: either you dump a lot of stuff into the timeline, then thin it out. Or you build it up from your bins. Both have their use. Thinning out a timeline makes it a bit harder to be decisive and cut stuff, because everything is already in play. It's harder to murder a darling if you just spent a couple of minutes trimming it to perfection. You also run the risk of trimming B-roll which you then never use. In the build-up scenario, you would still watch the footage, but then take "notes" on each clip as you go by keywording, setting In/Out ranges to get rid of stuff you don't need, add markers and so on. For a video such as the one you are making, I like to consider a "Radio Edit" first, in the sense that I want the flow of the audio in the main program to work. I don't even care about what is shown to the point of disabling the video track. 3. Make an effort to make the rough cut really rough. If you spend a lot of time up-front on trimming clips and perfecting the timeline, you get into trouble if things needs to rearrange a bit later. Part of the time you spent is now wasted. Once you have an idea of order and flow, you can start refining and trimming. This also means you can be quite lax with your early In/Out points in B-roll. If you're gonna use it, it'll be trimmed. 4. You can work non-linearly. I often start with a part where I have a good grasp of how to cut it. That might be in the middle. Then I create a couple more parts, and they serve as skeletal structure. I then fill in between them to naturally tie each section to the next. 5. Start building up a sound library early. Organization of music and sound effects are going to save you a lot of time down the road when you need recall of a particular effect from a video you put out 6 months ago. Finding a piece of music or a sound you like to use can take a lot of time. You don't want to redo that again. It's really nice work you did.

One piece of advice that worked really well for me; stay on the keyboard as MUCH as possible. I’ve dramatically sped up my editing time by learning as many short cuts as possible

Nice! One suggestion. I'd start now with folders for soundtracks, sound effects, transitions, overlays, or any other odds and ends stuff. Also when you get further along, create a "most used" folder to go and get things a lot easier instead of searching through folders trying to find it. Also one thing that helps me speed up my initial cutting is listening to everything that 1.5x or even 2x speed. Makes it a lot quicker obviously. Also, I watched your campfire video and I will say, don't even worry about color correction or grading at this point. Your video looks awesome, you could have said you spent an hour on it and I would have believed you. Id just focus on getting your editing sped up! Awesome work!

I think you're pacing yourself pretty well. I usually budget 1hr of editing for every finished minute for complex edits, and 30min for simple edits (or less). So your 6 min video would have taken me about 3 hours also.

First video from your channel that I have watched and I have to say you really knocked it out of the park with this tutorial. Your pacing was perfect to show what you did. Many times people who do tons of tutorials just go way too fast and it seems like they want to impress you with how knowledgeable they are rather than actually teach you how to do something. This video just worked perfect. I use pretty much the same method but after the first edit I make another duplicate copy and edit from there. After every edit I save a copy. That way if you want to revert back to a previous edit it is easy.. Thanks for this great video........Take care, Bluefin.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, it's the exact same procedure as I use too. The only thing I do different is I make copies of the project each time there is some big change in the edit and then I have saved copies of older versions if needs be. Also, top right of the screen is the export button so not sure what you did the drag-copy and then some click to get the export screen up? I personally use capcut but I mainly do mockups for documentaries to show clients what I can do I find it just as capable as final cut and it's free

Hi Kelley, great video! For future projects on Final Cut, try to master keywords, they are like sub-folders IN a big folder called EVENT. They are an excellent way to handle tons of media and it's subdivisions. Cheers! So the order would be LIBRARY>EVENT Campfire (classify with keywords)>PROJECT (sequence).

Super clear and concise! 👌One tip I would recommend is changing all your Library storage locations (Media, Motion Content & Cache) to 'in Library' so you don't get those 'missing file' messages and all the project files stay with the .fcpbundle file where ever you move it (unless you want your media separate for other reasons). Oh this is good.. So I too am fairly new to video( 3 years part time roughly) and i do travel vlogs. My videos have taken anywhere from 8-10 hours all the way up to about 80 hours. (Ive been working on a Vatican City video for about 4 months now) My main problem is when we travel to exciting places, i get so caught up in the moment i just start recording everything but forget to talk to the camera. So when I get to editing i have to go through literally 100s of gbs of files and try to build a decent story out of it.

1:46 I still do this...I watch most everything because I don't want too much Raw in my computer. I need more storage in my machine. The reason I'm doing this is because that first watching of the videos is teaching me better methods of recording. I now film shorter bursts or longer segments where I know I'll add my own b roll. This keeps the sound consistent, and the camera angle moving.

My best advice and this will be helpful if you end up working for a post house one day as well is to use your JKL keys to speed up sifting through footage.. never watch anything realtime... too much time. next the final cut pro keyboard shortcut are horrid.set your own shortcuts and learn them like youve never learned anything before. export the shortcut file and upload to a google drive in case one day you find yourself on another machine thats not yours that way you can have instant access to your shortcuts. use your shortcuts on the keyboard and stay off your mouse as much as possible when it comes to doing most things. finally... ALWAYS cross fade your audio even if its just a couple frames and even if there are no clicks as long as dialogue doesnt overlap. its the difference between a good video an an amateur's. export a project one with and one without the crossfades and thank me later. always use external drives. i never have the footage in the same drive where my os and software is installed. people will argue and tell you otherwise and theyre right internal drives today are fast enough but why would you want to put your machine through that whats easier and cheaper to replace an external ssd or your macs integrated drive.

I’m at the 5:50ish area. When it comes to audio and looking for parts where you talk, I like to detach the audio and look for spikes. I’ll pause for a moment so I can see the audio spikes and cut the fluff

I spend 40hrs on average editing my videos (motorcycle travel vlogs with about 3.5hrs of raw footage per video) which are 15-25min in length on avg. I do throw in extra clips from an insta360 cam, drone footage, iphone stills and video, etc, but the the majority of my footage is 3.5 hrs typically, taken with two GoPros running simultaneously.

I just made the same kind of video 1 day ago, but about editing macro... Same start with folders, same MacBook, same wallpaper. 😂 Anyway... Nice video 👍

This really interesting! I think I am in the same boat as I've only edited a few short films here and there but want to learn more. I wanted to ask a few questions: do you keep the footage you shot after you've created your youtube video on an external hard drive? And also, do you pay for artlist/would you recommend it? What made you choose final cut pro?

Why put all the clips in the timeline all at once double handling when you want to rearrange , I put them one at a time as I build the story?

Which settings do you use on the ZV-E1 ? Do you stabilise it with catalyst browse? The footage looks very stable.
