Lessons learned from failures hit harder than lessons learned from success, so in this video, I share my experience messing up the interview at Harvard Business School (HBS). Hoping that the mistakes that I made can help you prepare for your future interviews (schools, work, etc.).

Hey, thanks so much for sharing your story. I’m waiting for the result of my app for one of the M7. Oh the agony of waiting. HBS did not even invite me. But I think you summarized what I have been searching for. It feels like they reject my whole self with my whole past and future. Anyway, the quote is really something to think about. Thanks again!

Yeah, the feeling sucks. Luckily Adcoms (like our failures) don’t define us. Fast forward to your eventual graduation wherever you end up and the feeling changes to gratitude. Best of luck, waiting is the hardest part for sure. Keep me posted!

I know how you feel, Im from LA in my case I spent 3 years to be part of the best university in my country, but one aspect they ask is be good at mathematics and other things but the hardest is be good at mathematic, but the education in our country is not good so I decided to work on it, study a lot almost from 0, and I never past due to that test, I felt like I had spent 3 years😢😪.. I was working and tried to study as much I could😔😪 It was almost 6 years ago!

Thanks for for this video! What was it about your 90 second presentation that caused for your competence to be ranked so low? What did you observe from the people that did rank higher in competence? Thanks again!
@PatrickPrommel
@PatrickPrommel Год назад
I didn’t get access to other people’s scores so can only guess from the ones I saw that were “more competent” more serious and focused on professional accomplishments. I tried looking for my original video and couldn’t find it. I took a less serious approach, talked more about my goals and passions in a light hearted matter. Also would say that the study is quite small, we just ranked 10 people and had 10 people rank us. Probably tough crowd too, when you take into account they are all Wharton MBAs - you could imagine that non-MBAs would probably be more impressed with the degree.

That was interesting indeed , in my personal opinion the lessons to be learned from the story you told is , be yourself (Don't fake it till you make it) - trust your knowledge after doing all your research - don't care much about others first impression of you as long as you're respectful anyways and most importantly always keep in mind that your interviewer isn't perfect neither , he or she is another human being just like you, and finally be open about your thoughts and your visions on certain matters (Always be ready to have a rational discussions and don't fear the results) In other words have self respect - self awareness and never stop learning. (Step Up)

Glad you took away so much from the video! Last sentence is spot on with what I took away. I think I actually was going for saying that you should work on your first impressions, but agree that you can’t fully control what other people think of you so best not to worry.

They did the same strategy with me: No notetaker and asking very casual, open-ended questions with a very friendly tone. Then they asked a few professional questions and I did not switch into *lengthy involved analysis responses*. I got WL then rejected. Ironically I saw this video before the interview and didn't learn from it.

Great story Patrick and thank you for the valuable insights. Can you please tell me what was your GRE/GMAT score? I see that regardless of your GPA, they invited you to the interview and I am planning on to apply Wharton MS/MBA Program this year. I was wondering whether Wharton is also flexible regarding our GRE/GMAT scores. Best wishes!

I had the exact same GRE score advertised as average on Wharton’s class at the time. Every school publishes what their average GRE and GMAT scores are.

Do you recommend Harvard over Wharton? My ultimate goal is to get a PhD in management from a super reputable school.
@PatrickPrommel
@PatrickPrommel 7 месяцев назад
I don’t know much about PhD programs or the why behind your goal, but assuming based on mentioning of “super reputable”, you’re interested in the prestige. Harvard is undoubtedly best brand in education, so more people will be impressed with that. However, let’s say you manage to get PhD under Adam Grant at Wharton… I’d argue no better opportunity than that.

What is considered a “unique job?”
@PatrickPrommel
@PatrickPrommel Год назад
Good question. Most people applying to top MBA programs come from consulting or finance (and increasingly big tech), and so by unique I meant something outside of those fields. Schools want to keep their incoming classes balanced, diverse, and interesting as a class made up of 100% consultants arguably isn’t best environment to learn and grow. You can imagine the admissions committee being excited about getting an application that doesn’t come from a consultant after reading hundreds or thousands of similar ones. Search “[school name] class profile” you’ll see the breakdown of fields for incoming classes (spoiler: you’ll consistently find consultants to be ~25% of class).
