Since I've had a number of people reaching out to ask for an episode guide, this is the one I used. Its very handy because it gives a description, the stars of the episode, and a rating for how essential it is to watch. reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/w/algernonguide_tng? Also, here is the twitter link to the Barclay fancam twitter.com/SuperFoxcade/status/1682830331274207232?s=20

The quote from the Barclay episode that really stuck with me was when Picard refused to transfer him to another ship, saying it wasn't responsible to make another person someone else's problem. Really sold me on how it's more noble to help people than abandon them.

I remember Tasha Yar being killed off as a HUGE deal. Killing off a character credited in the title sequence? Inconceivable! And ironic that the episode finally gave her character a modicum of legit character development (Worf saying he wagered on her winning an upcoming martial arts tournament was a small but wonderful touch and it’s a shame the two of them didn’t have any other good moments together). Her reappearance in season 3’s Yesterday’s Enterprise was a wonderful surprise and made all of us wish for her to be back. Even having Crosby play a different character later was a welcome surprise that sadly didn’t play out as well as we hoped. Still, glad they got her into the finale and her face was the last one seen during the events of the past.

I liked how Worf is portrayed when interacting with other Klingons. He acts as someone who has studied their culture intensely, but from a far, never interacting directly, being surprised by the nuances. However I occasionally dislike how he interacts with humans, as his backstory is being raised by Humans on Earth, but is routinely suprised by human customs & behavior, like he's never seen it before. I get him not exactly understanding human behavior, (his season1 line to Data "I never understood their humor") due to fact he has an alien mind, but he should be familiar with it, not constantly suprised/disgusted by it.
@diccchocolate416

My favourite bit about worf is that he's not really a cultural kilingon. He's like a pantomime of a klingon, it's a shame they never really delved into it.

I feel like Worf intentionally distances himself from his Earth upbringing to feel closer to his Klingon heritage.
@Korgano

I agree. They just handled the “alien outsider” thing strangely with things like him not understanding how to open a door with a latch or how to interact with a house cat. That said, he’s still my favorite character and I think that his quest for identity is a very relatable thing. You don’t have to be adopted from an alien race to question whether you fit into the culture around you and to wish to be with people who understand you. One of the things that I do like about Worf is that, slowly and subtly, the Enterprise and its crew become the place where he belongs.

43:00 Barclay btw has some of the typical symptoms of a schizoid personality disorder. In VOY his character is also used in several episodes over the series. Barclay is one of the examples how classic Trek shows characters usually cast aside in a society becoming the hero of a story due to their unique perspective. But this aspect of representation in classic Trek also always came with a twist: Minorities were represented, but always as their better self, since it was one of Roddenberry's core concept for Trek characters that they should be aspirational to the viewers (again not playing to the narcissism, but showcasing a better version of their represented self).

Wow. As soon as you mentioned how "Measure of a Man" was the defining episode in ST:TNG, I knew that you really understand this show. It's like a lightbulb went off in the writers' brains, that TNG had the potential to be something amazing, and it started with that one episode. And I enjoyed you giving appreciation to Barcley, and then bromancing about Worf--I've never been big into Klingon anything on the show, but as I've gone back to watch the series recently, I've come to appreciate how funny Michael Dorn is and how good he was as a Starfleet Klingon officer. And yes, Data is my favorite, but I like all the cast (including Troi--she started to develop more as a character when they stopped using her for every dang romance episode).

The biggest thing that held back TNG in the early seasons was, ironically, Roddenberry himself. His mandate that there be no interpersonal drama between the crew and always be utopian really handcuffed the writers.
@IN-tm8mw
@IN-tm8mw 4 месяца назад
As a writer myself, i get it. The writer were used to writing drama so much, it can get out of control when you try something new. Even today writers still have a problem recapturing what made Star Trek different from other sci-fi shows. What made me love TNG was not the interpersonal drama but How mature or professional they dealt with it. Something I feel was lost to most modern writers of ST today. So it was a balancing act that i felt they got right naturally over time since all his mandates were only loosed and not completely disregarded.

I've been a massive fan of Star Trek for years. Although I do watch Star Trek videos on RU-vid anyway, I was intrigued by your title. A great video in both content and structure. Although there were poor episodes, many episodes had something great. Action, intrigue, emotion, philosophical and moral dilemmas, as well as those episodes that were fun. The variety that you got week to week kept people invested in the show, in the days when you did have to invest your time and effort into shows that couldn't just be binge-watched. Your point about Worf having,and living an idealised view of a Klingon lifestyle was something that I hadn't heard someone say before. Though the main stories were great, some obviously better than others, it was some of the smaller moments and guest cast that added so much depth. A scene you briefly touched on was O'Brien and the Cardassian, it had great acting but also some fantastic and subtle reactions. It Humanised the Cardassians. I've really enjoyed this video.

I find discussing Trek incredibly fulfilling; it embodies the essence of what it means to engage with the Trek universe. When conversations veer into passionately defending the rights of sentient beings, whether natural or artificial, it's as if we're actively countering the regressive voices that seek to hinder progress. My journey into the world of Trek began at the age of 14, amidst personal challenges, as I immersed myself in reruns of Voyager. Those moments spent with my closest friends, playfully reciting lines like "decks 8 through 12 breached! Shields at 22%, engineering report!", left an indelible mark on my imagination. When I finally began to watch The Next Generation it was a joy, it and the other series has a timeless appeal, well all but TNG S01. The emotional depth conveyed through Patrick Stewart's profound speeches, grappling with moral dilemmas and their resolutions, sparked a realization within me. I began to actively cultivate my ability to articulate thoughts, using them as the catalyst for initiating discussions and diffusing tensions in various situations. Through Trek, I learned to navigate challenges with reason and thoughtfulness, a skillset I might not have honed otherwise.

Then I made my way through DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and so on. I also had the same thought of "This is a show for fucking nerds, but let's see what all the hype is about" and as I'm watching through it I'm like "Wait, this isn't for nerds, it's actually good" and then finally I was like "No wait, I am just a fucking nerd" It also introduced me to the genre of sci-fi TV which I didn't realize I was sorely lacking in my life. I made my way to Stargate SG-1 and it has officially become my go-to comfort show. I highly recommend it and Stargate Atlantis (assuming you don't mention it in the video, I'm only halfway through). All of these shows hit me like "Why did I wait so long to get into this?"

I think its fairly obvious that when it comes to “genocide” against the Borg then there should be no moral qualms about it. The whole point of the Borg is to assimilate the technology of as many technologically advanced species as possible. The Collective is eusocial and cannot be negotiated or reasoned with under normal circumstances. Its essentially a case of “destroy it if you can when the opportunity arises because you might not get many of them”.

Me too. Never liked TOS except for the concept of the Prime Directive, but by the 6th ep of TNG I was hooked in a major way. Moved on since. Now I like Stargate SG-1 quite a bit. Feed your head as Grace Slick said.

Keep in mind those effects looked better in 480i. The glowing man looked great in the late 80's. Still ok on dvd on sdtv. Once they upped the rez and fixed some stuff - some of the magic is lost, but can also be fun in a different way.

I have the same feelings, though I watched TNG & DS9 as a teenager and in my 20s and mostly I liked it. I am also fan of other SF series: SG-1 & SGA and Babylon 5. These also had worse the 1st season, but then developed their own path. They are more 'action and adventure' shows, especially SGA, but there are also many episodes in ST type, especially in SG-1.

With your introduction speech, the problem is: Many people, when they think of "Star Trek" they have that cheesy campiness of the TOS era in mind with Kirk, Spock and the likes and as iconic as they might be and as great as the 4th. and 6th Star trek movies are, coming close to the general air of the TNG era, the series of TOS IS pretty outdated and even by many modern Star Trek fans regarded as obsolete nowadays (though their might be Trekkies who think otherwise.....a FEW.....*COUGH*), most commonly agree that the late 80's to mid 90's era of Star Trek was what set the tone for the "modern" Star trek fan. These shows are just so elaborate in their writing and handle timeless topics of ethics, philosophy, moral standards and the likes in such interesting and deep and yet incredible entertaining ways that they just stand out as timeles classics, especially since THAT was the core of THAT era of Star Trek, and NOT the special effects and cgi like Alex Kurtzman thinks it would be..... Also, the stellar acting performances and many great lines of Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Andrew J. Robinson, Avery Brooks, Rene Auberjonois, Armin Shimerman and many many many more helped there too, a lot!

One of the things about TNG which is both a blessing and a curse is that it had a sense of continuity TOS didn't maintain in the same way. TOS was far more episodic and stand-alone, but that also meant it was potentially leaving some damned good material for a long-run treatment later, sometimes on a cinema screen rather than the television. TNG did exactly the same thing for some of the better ideas from TOS that Wrath of Khan did for TOS, but there are some notable exceptions which the producers and show-runners (with the ever present Rick Berman) didn't entirely leave behind. In turn, some of the nuances in what defines the Federation or Starfleet arguably needed more substance. One of the story types which was used the least of all in TOS, the time travel dilemma or paradox, became a staple in TNG, season after season. And what's more, there is a single key piece of technology which revolutionized the process of story-telling from the point of view of the writers and producers: The Holodeck Episode. I would contend that it is precisely because of the Holodeck in TNG that there is no reason at all to have TOS's "Mirror Universe" in TNG (DS9 got it later, even though it had Quark's Holosuites, because that's after 7 years of no Mirror universe).

Also, gonna be honest: do not skip Voyager, and do not skip Enterprise either. They're neither of them perfect, but both are at least consistently following narrative trajectories which have been pretty well established from as far back as TOS. I'm not so sure that anything post-2009 can say the same. Regarding "Enterprise", jeez there's a show with too many faults, but the way in which it addresses the Vulcans was too long overdue, plus it arguably has Jeffrey Combs in his best ST role of all time, an Andorian called Shran.

2:20 -- RE: Data as Sentient Life (and a Toaster); see, this is why you shouldn't skip Voyager. The Holographic Doctor in Voyager steals the proverbial show precisely because of narrative conventions established in TNG regarding powerful super-computers (being used to run Starships and Shipyards and Planets) being tied into the systems of a Holodeck. Self-aware holographic "life" is not only interesting and a little bit challenging philosophical-wise, but also potentially terrifying should those ever-important safeties be disabled, because Effectively Real. It is about artificial intelligence being presented in a way which is outside of a pessimistic normal outcome which more closely resembles Terminator's Skynet than anything else. The particular show with Data in a Court setting "Measure of a Man" is itself an inversion of a court-room drama episode in TOS, with Captain Kirk being falsely accused by a computer that has been secretly made to Lie by another human. DS9, in my opinion, has one of the best self-aware and truly "human" Holodeck characters of the entire franchise: Vic Fontaine. The curious thing about Vic as a character is that he operates as a kind of undercover psychiatric assistant to DS9's medical staff, so he doesn't only pull his own incorporeal weight (I guess his power consumption does have weight) but also earns his keep as a valuable member of a team or a crew.

5:45 -- RE: Season 1 and 2, Skipping, and Disputable Decisions; Granted, I hardly claim to know all about Star Trek, but there are some reasons to actually *Not* skip most of season 1 and 2, the most significant one being that later seasons can be even more tedious than the first two because by that time the Writers and Producers had dialed everything in to their expectations and as a result the shows became downright Lazy. Moreover, in the same way that TOS had left behind many of its best set-ups because only three seasons in total, TNG had too much good material, leading to any number of characters (and their situations) completely being left in unresolved or potentially interesting places. "Ensign Ro" showed up in the last season of Picard, I've heard.... that's as good an example as any of a story arc which actually required much, much more than a call-back in the "Picard" future universe. Disputable Decisions abound in the first two seasons, I won't argue against that. What I will argue is that Doctor Pulaski was the right call and I actually liked that character enough to want to have seen more of her in later seasons. Another Disputable Decision is one which will require many re-watchings: it seems clear to me before Season 3 that the Writers and Producers were aiming at telling grand narratives over the space of many seasons and they definitely set it up to be that way early on in the development process. One of the reasons I'm confident about it is the "Farpoint" episode, at least as it relates to the character of Q. If anything, I think that there is an obvious subtext to much of Seasons 5 and 6 wherein the plotlines of certain episodes do not make any sense at all unless Q had somehow or another (ie. *Without Appearing On the Screen* ) set up the situations in-universe to ensure that very specific things would happen to Picard; this gets lampshaded more than once in episodes where Q has a guest role, including "All Good Things". The Pinnacle of story-telling in TNG is found in Seasons 4 and 5. Season 6 and 7 must be analogous to "outriggers" or something, necessary to counter-balance Seasons 1 and 2.

9:30 -- RE: Gene Roddenberry Was Difficult, so Revolving Door; *NOT TRUE,* and you simply claiming it (because others have) doesn't prove You or Those Others correct. The Series was always an Anthology based upon Characters (and a Situation) which Roddenberry had originated but not completely developed on his own. *Consequently,* they shopped those characters and situations around to a whole mess of writers -- anyone at all who'd be interested in working, in fact -- and sometimes it was those 3rd party jobbing writers who added in the finest details that Star Trek fans came to expect about the Franchise on the whole. D.C. Fontaine is a key factor in this claim, I'd bet, which is funny considering it was partly political optics and theory which had her use a male pen name during some of TOS while also being D.C. Fontaine for the remainder, and then returning to work on TNG Season 1 due to her involvement in the 1960s. There is another point which *basically No-one* ever mentions, not even Red Letter Media: Star Trek (the Show) was recognized as being Influential in its own time and certainly by the 1970s, but this recognition meant that if there was any real-world Gubmint Agency involved with it in *ANY* way during the 1960s, it doesn't necessarily have to be Just NASA. In Other Words, there are some indications that perhaps the C.I.A. would have been another one of the reasons why Roddenberry was made a fall guy for difficulties. (Becuz LULZ yeah, Gary-7, Million Dollar Dude, and a Fall Guy...)

18:45 -- RE: Exploring the Human Condition via Morality Plays; Time for an Honorable Mention from Voyager. My favorite Berman-era "Morality play" episode of all time is "Muse" which isn't exactly mind-blowing, but *is* exceptionally tight in terms of how it gets to make drama with added layers of Subtext being played out for a double set of Audiences. Delicious, when its done right. A not so delicious comparison episode which gets into Philosophy and morality plays: TNG's "Disaster" from Season 5, 5th episode. Philosophically, it seems very clear to me that Starfleet trains its Officers to be ready to split into compartmentalized "Cells" which also means, consequently, that it is much more like an ideological revolutionary guerrilla force than a Navy. That's not mere Redundancy kicking in. The ironic "saving grace" is that 2 people on the Enterprise now recognize themselves as Number 1! Sometimes, TNG is outright called Communist in its ways, means, and thinking. This would not be the best example, but it would constitute pretty good circumstantial proof since we (the Audience) do not get fully indoctrinated into Starfleet as any of the characters presumably have. RE: Roddenberry's Humanism; without a doubt one of the most contentious-in-a-Good-way features of Star Trek, Roddenberry intentionally chose to present an Optimistic projection of the future based on the ideals within humanism, logic and reason being key. *And This Is Why Making First Contact With Vulcans Is Miraculous Good Fortune,* although not entirely by Chance since the Vulcans clearly knew where to find Humans before Humans learned to consider Vulcans "as human" (ie. as Persons) as themselves. Different, yet ideally Equal. The Problem presented by the Optimistic outcome is that it is apparently caused by Intention, and as the old saying goes, that way is no guarantee for the outcome (ie. The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions). The *Only* meaningful difference in TOS between the "regular" universe characters and their "Mirror" universe counterparts is the *Intentions* that the characters have. In the Regular universe, Starfleet has a Prime Directive, "Do no Harm." In the Mirror universe, there is an unwritten (yet universal) rule, "Do as thou wilt if ye can get away with it. Perhaps you'll end up in charge." In other words, Self Preservation is being straw manned a lot by the Mirror universe. Regular universe Vulcan altruistic Logic is only too well known with respect to the lives of the many, the few or the one. Robert Heinlein made special note in the novel "Starship Troopers" about the importance of individual rights to the future government of Earth, so clearly, that's why he never wrote a Star Trek script.

Great video! I don't think Season 1 is too bad, if you think about it being an olive branch to fans of the original series then some of the odd stuff pairs well. TNG, absolutely wouldn't be what it is without Patrick Stewards Picard. I've always hated Barkley, not sure what that says about me...but I'll watch a little closer next time I see a Barkley episode.

What a lovely video! Weirdly I am in such a similar position (minus the e-celebrity status mind you.) I started my Star Trek journey during the pandemic because of RedLetterMedia. I had the interest for years but with their enthusiasm I had to go for it. Started with TNG season 1 (yeah I know), then DS9 and now I'm finishing ToS which has taken longer than expected if I'm being totally honest. Now I too have knowledge and passion for a show that pretty much no one else in my life has interest in ^^' in that way this video was quite cathartic. Even tho Star Trek is such a new thing in my life, it feels quite important and special as I haven't found really anything like it. Even after all those episodes rangeing from embarassing to excellent, just hearing you talk about All good things got me misty eyed. Thanks for the great video! Any plans to do more videos on the franchise like DS9? Now I just gotta hope for Mike and Rich to talk about more Star Trek and try to rope some friends to watching the series so I have more people to talk to about it ^^
