So sorry my brother! When you speak of your brother with epilepsy, you make me think of my situation in 1996! It was my 2nd year at varsity and I was on my way home to Mafikeng, from Johannesburg where I studied. I had been writing exams, so I was excited to be going home! I went by my aunt’s house to say goodbye because she lived and worked in Johannesburg so sometimes she’d have a message for people at home or stuff to send so I’d pass by her house each time I go home. She wasn’t home but her neighbor saw me and she came over to tell me she traveled. But then she added, ‘your aunt went to Mafikeng because one of her sister in Mafikeng’s children passed away’! My mom was my aunt’s only sister in Mafikeng, they were only 3 siblings (sisters)! I couldn’t ask her questions, I didn’t even think, tears just started running down my face! I quickly composed myself and left to take what was the longest trip to Mafikeng from Johannesburg I had ever traveled. The neighbour didn’t even have enough facts, she didn’t know if by ‘your aunt’s sister’ perhaps my aunt was referring to a friend of hers she probably called ‘sister’, just as I would refer to my friends as a brother or a sister! That was probably me just hoping, however cruel that may sound, to think death belongs anywhere and everywhere but your house or family! She didn’t know I was from Mafikeng and that I probably was the son of the sister to my aunt that’s in Mafikeng, that she was referring to!!! She kept apologising and asking if I was okay to travel on my own! I just said it is okay, and that I was okay! The damage was done, I was totally broken but I had to go, I had to go catch a taxi to Mafikeng in that state! I was hoping against the obvious, I have very little recollection of the trip except that everyone and everything seemed to move so slow! When I got off the taxi and started walking towards the house I saw the many people in my homestead, the hustle and bustle, the up and down that comes with funeral preparations in an African homestead and so reality hit me! But I had 5 siblings from my mom’s side because my dad as a traditional Zulu man had a big family; and I had 4 more siblings from the other side of my family ( mamkhulu, my father’s other wife)…so the questions that kept me occupied the entire trip were still unanswered; who died, how did they die; why was I not told….etc etc etc!! None of my 9 siblings was in plain sight and the little ones didn’t run towards me like they usually would…it was as if everyone colluded to keep this mystery going on until I reached the house, and it felt like the closer I got, the further the house moved away from me, I was anxious!!! My father who, like a typical African man that believed that ‘big boys don’t cry’, was the first person I met at the door, and he simply said to me…’boy, your sister XYZ has left us, we’re on our way to fetch water and we can use some extra hands’! My bags were still in my hands and they just fell, I don’t know how. It takes a lot to get me to cry even in these situations but I was broken….though I knew for sure by then, that someone in this house is no more!!! They eventually told me they wanted to protect me because I was writing exams! One of the papers I was writing was a final exam paper! So I eventually understood that they did what they did, believing that by doing so they were acting in my interest, though under circumstances such as in your case, I’d expect different!!! It’s a controversial matter without correct or incorrect answers! By the way, my sister was also epileptic and she is a sibling that came after me….we were extremely close to a point where her condition was what inspired me to go to Medical school!
