One of the most common questions I get online is - “How do you find those gorgeous southwest desert boondocking locations you visit?”
I wish there was a simple answer, but the fact of the matter is it takes a fair bit of research. There isn’t one all-encompassing site or database to send folks to.
Since the question arises so often, I’ve decided to publish this blog post detailing the various methods and information sources I’ve used.

Ray my heart becomes warm when you reach AZ, knowing you are hear and everything is safe. Your winter travels are my favorite. I live through yours and Ann’s eyes so maybe one day I can Rv travel. Enjoy your post and blogs. Southeast AZ resident.

Ray and Ann cheers we just left Ajo and wondered where you dumped your sewer. Alstays sani dump app shows some Rv parks in Ajo but didn’t say if you could use their facilities. Jeff and Liz Bend Oregon.

I've been using Belly Acres across from the grocery store to dump $7 www.bellyacresrvpark.com/rates.html. Call the phone number on the office door and a lady comes out to collect. Happy trails!

Ray, I have followed your channel for a couple of years (and have really enjoyed your content). I am curious, having never boondocked before, how safe has your experience been. Have you ever had a fear of someone with bad intentions approach you while out in the desert? You certainly have provided some fantastic views for us to enjoy.

Thanks! No, haven't had any issues. Most of the weird people encounters have been when we are near or in urban environments not out in the boonies or rural areas. People in the boonies I find are a lot more laid back and interesting to talk to. :) It's in the cities I find many more stressed out desperate people.

Great info ! You laid out a lot of good methods & resources. As you stated, if I may paraphrase, you gotta do a little homework. We employ a lot of the items you mentioned. Talking to fellow campers at sites is usually a good thing. Many years ago I blindly went down a single lane gravel & dirt road for a couple of miles. Came to a dead end. Backing skills got a little workout. Since then I tend to do a little homework first.

haha, I had to do that once in Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge down a narrow dirt road. It had rained not long before and I hit a wash about a mile in that was too deep with water to risk it. :) Hard on the tranny in our old Ford truck backing so far up and down hills at low speed, had to stop a few times to let it cool down.

Great content and resources. Given that you travel relatively close to the southern boarder with Mexico, have you ever encountered anyone who may have crossed the boarder seeking a ride, water etc. If so how have you dealt with this situation?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Год назад
Thanks. :) I haven't encountered anything like that. 11th winter spent in the southwest now. I leave a jug of water outside the rig just in case some poor soul is thirsty but never had any takers. I've found most of the uncomfortable situations happen near cities. Usually, it's local druggies asking for cigarettes, gas, or money. It's especially bad on the USA and Canada's west coast.

You'd think that but over the last decade I haven't noticed much difference in the places I go. In fact this year I'm seeing far fewer campers. Cheers, Ray

Yes, been down to the Big Bend area a few times. www.loveyourrv.com/?s=big+bend One trip, we camped in Big Bend Ranch State Park right on the banks of the Rio Grande and loved it. It was April, and the flowers we in bloom. Gorgeous! I'd like to get back there again, but a long way to go given the fuel costs these days. Cheers, Ray

We are in the process of selling the house and going full time. Can I ask how far ahead you plan?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Год назад
When in the southwest desert we fly by the seat of our pants rarely planning at all other than general areas we'd like to visit that winter and that may change due to weather or hearing of another cool spot to check out. We almost exclusively camp off-grid and in places that don't need reservations
