How I fix the Honda Generator EU2000 Surging on smart / eco throttle idle

If you have a Honda EU2000 or EU2200 generator that surges at idle low rpm when you switch on the smart throttle / eco option, this might help you fix the problem, this fix generally works for any Honda power equipment that surges. Sometimes running the machine with the choke slightly applied will rich the air / fuel mixture enough to smoothen it out, but this really isn't the proper way to fix it. You'll need to remove the side cover and then carburetor. Be careful not to loose the small throttle spring under the white bracket mounted to the top of the carburetor.

If I could give you 100 likes I would. Mine ran my rv with AC running all day July 4th at the beach no problems. We are getting ready to leave for the Tetons and I changed the oil and it started doing this exact thing. No time to send to mechanic. Then I remembered Im a RU-vid engineer and you came up first. Thank you so much for that video. I fixed my first issue (ran only on choke), but had this crazy hi/lo idle once I moved off choke. This video solved my issue! Luckily I went to the Honda dealer to pick up a kit so I had the o-rings that were wasted on my generator!

Followed a few videos on youtube regarding this issue on my EU2000i, i cleaned the carb many times on and off, changed the fuel and it was still hunting and would only work on choke. Then I had a thought while lying in bed, "Mmm the 5 turns for the low idle screw, could it be not enough?" so today I got a small crosspoint bit and tightened the idle screw one turn. It works a treat now. I was getting to the stage of giving up tbh but glad I didn't.

Thanks for a great fix, my EU2000 would only run with choke half on. Turns out the jet was dirty, ran a piece of copper wire thru that hole in the jet and lots of white caked stuff, could see all of it with a 20X magnifying glass.🙂

Thanks so much for the video. Worked like a charm . You saved me a bunch. One little thing I did different was to remove the side plastic cover on the exhaust side of the generator to allow me to get a screwdriver and fine tune the idle speed by adjusting the idle screw when I was done.

Thank you. I had the same problem. I used a rogue bristle on on brass wire brush. There was a particle smaller than a grain of sand. Works great now.

This part is sold as - jet set pilot #35 I tried the screwdriver twisting method but it snapped off. I’d recommend lubricating for some minutes before trying to pry it out .

Fixed my idle surge, thanks. I adjusted the screw with the engine running, seemed to have no effect. Only adjusted 1/2 turn each way.

if it's the large faced plastic phillips or star socket screw all it does it raise and lower the idle speed by pressing on the flap lever. it dosen't adjust air or fuel mixture.

The hole is about the size of a wire from a wire brush.

My eu2200i was surging but it was due to a dirty filter on my window a/c unit. I also changed the spark plug.

Cool video. I had a slimier problem with a EM600, but it would surge when coming off a load. Hay by chance do you still have any wheels for a Sportlawn? I can't seem to fined a way of messaging you through RU-vid.

Hi, I would like if you could help me I have a honda inverter eu2200i, with broken side covers, but trying to find them I only find covers for the eu2000 model, like the one you are building, you think these will fit the eu2200i model, thank you very much in advance

Hi , so on mine EU 2000i , it wasn't starting at all , I've cleaned the jets on the carburetor , used a torch to burn the built up carbon in the muffler and spark arrestor ,and changed the spark plug , started up like a champ I ran it on idle for about 30 minutes. Then it started the up and down surging . I checked the spark plug and the tip of it was all black with carbon . Now when i was replacing that little black jet with the O -ring , I had a hell of a time getting it pushed down . Any suggestions as where to go from here ? Help help ! I'm not a mechanic ,LOL so be gentle

Sounds like your choke may be stuck on, or air filter plugged? Try some lube on the black jet to reinsert it.

Mine runs fine on eco mode green light comes on no problems under load. When eco mode is not on green light will come on and when put under load engine bogs down and green light goes off. Any suggestions already cleaned pilot jet

Mine does the opposite- runs as if always on eco throttle. Tries to rev up then drops back down. Is there a fast run circuit that could be blocked?

theres a servo mounted ontop of the carb that actuates the throttle when a load is presented to the generator, maybe loose or bad wire?

Thank for the video - how can you determine the air-jet (in your video) is the problem vs a clogged carb fuel jet? I’m having a similar issue with a EU2200i that was stored for 3months with non-oxy fuel and stabilizer? My 2200 had about 10 hours on it total - so quite new. Trying to determine what my particular issue is?

Generally if the unit will run with the choke turned on but dies when you put the choke lever to the run position it is your main fuel jet that is blocked if the machine will run with the choke off but it surges It's usually the air jet that is blocked but sometimes they are both blocked.

I see you wrote "Aspen Fuel Only" on your generator. Can I assume you had carburetor problems on regular gas and switched to Aspen fuel after this fix? Aspen alkylate fuel should prevent gummed up carburetors. Does your Honda run good on Aspen?

It's a work generator and only gets used once or twice a year. It is near impossible to start (30 pulls) after sitting 6 months with farm grade fuel in it so I told them to use aspen4 as it seems to keep better than the gas does and starts in 4 or 5 pulls after its 6 month sleep. It runs as good on aspen as it does on marked farm gas,

Tiny, pick it out with the smallest guitar string or unwind a bicycle brake cable and use a strand,.

Hi i have a little different problem. It was surging all the time. I had to use it half choke , then i cleaned the carb changed the spark plug . Now it works fine and all of a sudden it surges then it stops itself or i give some load on (like hair dryer) then normal again. I really dont know what to do next !!!!!! Any suggestions? Maybe turn the idle stop screw in a bit, the large plastic one that presses on the throttle butterfly.

I tried cleaning the main jet just like you did and nothing happened. Mine starts good with full choke then when I set the choke to run it surges. But if I keep the choke half way runs smooth

You didn’t clean that jet on camera. Does the hole run the full length of the jet? Or does it stop where it meets the perpendicular hole??

Stops at the perpendicular hole, pass a strand of unwound bicycle brake cable through it a few times you will see it poke into the perpendicular hole and stop.

Yeah, make sure ones not upside down. One of them has a balance port that can't be blocked. Did you take out the plastic jet ontop and poke it out with a bicycle brake cable strand? (Yes on the brand new carb)

That engine breather 'heater' is mostly cumbersome , and useless (unless you're living in Antarctica - but even then it wouldn't work right imo. First thing to do on any Honda generator is to completely remove the crap and replace it with a simple hose . Some even go as far as routing that hose straight to the atmosphere , then blocking the air filter nipple (mine has a cute little M6 bolt threaded into it. , but I won't tell anybody. The trick here is to not permit old gas to block that tiny pilot jet : Empty the tank, start the engine till it dies out, unscrew the float drain every time the generator is stored for more than a few weeks (months ?). Use non- ethanol + stabilizer , too. There's no way around it . This all takes 5 minutes once a routine. I think Honda's Inverters are too complcated to work on , but will last and last with no issues if oil is changed frequently ...and of course if gunk is kept out of carbs.
