I had a sore back for YEARS from throwing at the pottery wheel. If I want to be doing ceramics for my whole life, I had to change something. My posture and form was terrible because of bad ergonomics - but I changed that.
I made my wheel higher at it changed my life. ✨

Hey! Usually I don't comment, but your content is really nice and the tip to raise the wheel height was the solution to my back pain I got after only 1-2 hours of throwing. I'm prone to back pain, but the too low setting was accelerating it drastically. Now I just sit naturally straight! Thanks for the tip 💫

yes I know .....I don't understand why the teachers are still pushing people to be all hunched over....

I started raising my wheel up pretty early into my ceramics career (on cinder blocks) but the mirror was the real game-changer! That DREADFUL deep lean to the side was KILLER! When I teach classes on a standard-height wheel without a mirror I honestly feel like a hot mess 😅

Mirror is a game changer. Just tried it for the first time yesterday and I loved it. I’m getting straighter walls, more even throwing lines and my back feels so much better.

I discovered the same thing :). You’re right it helps. One more thing is to make the legs of your stool shorter in the front so your seat tilts down a little or a lot. This helps keep your lower back straight and more weight in your feet.

the mirror is absolutely life changing, its taken me a couple months to get used to it but i have noticed a big difference in my back and in the speed at which i make pots. before the mirror, i would get off my stool, walk like 5 or 6 feet away, and squat down to look at my pot, it just always took so long to do

I already did all those things....it is much better...my professor was not impressed...LOL...but I have been doing it this way from almost the beginning of my working on the wheel.....glad you figured this out too...pain will make us find a way to be out of it......

Very insightful! As someone who works on a computer for 10+ hours a day, I appreciate someone thinking about long term health in posture!

Thank you so much Mae for this approach to preserving your back. I thought that I was just doomed to limited time on the wheel because my back would hurt so bad, and then at night it was even worse. I am so happy that potters are thinking about staying healthy long term (don't forget those masks, potters!). Now I am eager to get on the wheel again...

Great video. I added both a 5” and an 8” set of bed risers to two wheels at the community studio I belong to, 8” being too tall for some :). They are now quite popular. I then raised the height of my stool so I could hunch over haha - I’m going to try your idea of lowering the seat. Your video is a great service to so many of us. Thank you.

Haha I love that you raised the wheel just to raise the seat! give it a go - I know that when I go back to lower wheels it takes a few pots before I am used to the difference in height.

This video comes at the right time. I have been learning pottery for two years and now my left arm hurts a lot. I’m afraid I might have used divorce wrongly with my arm.
