It's awesome that you pulled this off. I will say though that when I watch a magic show I always feel like it is cheating if someone is helping off stage. Same thing if the host of the show is secretly helping the magician.
Your first attempt on the show was an off the shelf trick, but your winning one was something you put your own SOUL into. Pun intended:) What a generous video you have given us here! I honestly don't think anyone could figure this out. Yes it's simple when you know. Disappointing? How many methods and sold tricks out there are disappointing but only cuz often the devilish secret is so simple. Great job mate! Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for this reveal. So someone wrote the answers, placed the paper on top of the sole in the prop brought in to hold the briefcase. You then stepped on the sole and therefore placed it in your shoe as you yelled for the audience to applaud Teller coming up - hiding the sound of the sole’s magnets clicking onto the shoe. Wow very tricky. The key is the helper who was off stage to load the answers onto the sole. No one expected an offstage helper - least of all Penn and Teller in this trick. Great job.
@@JacaboBlanco i get the sentiment - but P&T know the rules to the show so they know it’s fair game - and plus they know he couldn’t have written it himself having been watching him the whole time. But maybe I’m missing something
I remember watching your trick years ago, completely befuddled. Glad I've managed to stumble upon it again now, that there is a proper explanation for it. Thanks for making it public, it won't keep me awake at night anymore. :D Good job on the trick and really, thanks for letting us know about how it was done!
during the whole part where Penn and Teller play darts, pick words, and play rock paper scissors someone wrote the results down on what looks like the ticket to the show, and then was placed in the table that was brought on.
Lmao 😂😂😂 love the heckler trick...watched every fool us episode and it seems the simplest tricks are the ones that fool penn and teller. Even with these simple methods I would still stuff it up lol keep up the good work.
I usually avoid looking in the comments in magic trick videos, or clicking on any of the unofficial "TRICK REVEALED!" videos that youtube likes to suggest. But hey, if the magician himself wants to reveal it, awesome. I never would have guessed that. Simple and brilliant.
I'm surprised that this fooled them -- the table coming from back stage should have been a big red flag -- but maybe they didn't realize/remember that the table wasn't initially on stage.
Saw both performances on P & T and was in tears when Richard 'won' on second attempt. Trick is fantastic, and when you find out how it is done it is very much hmmmmmm now why didn't I think of that! Brilliant
Very nice of you to reveal this amazing routine, you surely fooled me RB ;-) PS:so there was someone under the table writing the outcome on the piece of paper who placed it in the cut out piece of shoe??
+Richard Bellars ok thank you for your response Richard ,i just watched your performance now for the third time .So there was someone else who wrote the prediction backstage who then placed the piece of paper in the cut out of the shoe?
Yep, you got it Frederic, that is how understand what Richard said. Richard also said the cut out piece of shoe was hidden in the leg of the table and when the table was brought out he stepped on the cut out piece piece of shoe. But how he got the cut out piece of shoe out of the leg of the table in order to then step on it, I am unsure of.
susp1 there was a hole at the bottom of the table at floor level. So he just slipped his foot in and stepped on it. At least that is how I understood it.
I dont know why you predicted that this would be disappointing. I wasnt disappointed in the slightest. In fact, I was actually more impressed by the revelation than when you did the actual trick on stage. The brilliance is in its simplicity, and the fact that you thought of it and executed it well, should make you damn proud. Btw, all tricks are simple at their core. It all starts from a simple idea, a key, if you will. Even the most seemingly complex tricks are fundamentally simple. And also, simple or not, Penn & Teller didnt figure it out on the show, so thats what actually matters. Well done, you've impressed a whole bunch of people, not just me :)
Haha I had the thought "maybe he didn't slip the paper down or had it inserted by an assistant, but had a hole in the shoe and stepped on it", but was stumped on how it was delivered onto the stage. The editing does make it harder to pinpoint the method. Very clever!
Absolutely stunning Richard, I still don't understand how the predictions got on the paper so exactly, I'm certainly not as smart as Penn or Teller but you really twisted my melon, fantastic man, I am really surprised that you didn't land a contract yourself for a show in Vegas you definitely deserve fame and fortune, good luck my friend I subbed.
Thanks for sharing this, and more-so for answering a large portion of the comments on this video giving your viewers even further insight to this creative trick.
Richard.. I admire your modesty and ingenuity. You thoroughly thought through every conventional method and left them open as sucker gags. When I watched the performance I suspected the same method as Pen & Teller did. Congrats! ..(but you should have sold your secret!.. it's great!).
As much as I'm sad I know the trick now, it's neat to be able to appreciate how clever it was. Absolutely brilliant. And oh yeah I totally thought there was someone in the case.
I think your 1st attempt and being chastise by Penn was your motivation for not getting even as much as it was respect for you not only as a magician but a person. I think sometimes in life we need things like this to awaken our creative juices. We never know where inspiration might come from so we should always be ready to be inspired. Great vid and thanks for sharing!
I knew it! It was magic. ;-) But honestly I expected a slider. Like a drawer. But I could not figure out how you'd get a consistently reliable entry. I thought that raising your toes would open the front and you would just slide your shoe over a 'stick' with a holder and you'd grab it. A lot can go wrong there. This is just amazingly foolproof.... well almost.
WTF! So many people told me you can't have other people off stage writing it down secretly and handing it off and I was right all along and just saw this video 6 years later lol
Brilliant stuff! This is a prime example of how you should not let the simplicity of the method detract from the effect. You can create miracles with just a simple card force if you wrap it up in a good presentation. Thanks for sharing!
Richard Bellars haha, i take it they know how it is done now? I was thinking this is a trick that you could only perform with a stage, but im sure there is a way of adapting it to more of a street scene?
TBH i think alot of people could have guessed all night, everyone is so acustomed to thinking it goes down in the shoe, i dont think many could have guessed it, honestly its a stoke of brilliance where you think out of the box... in the way this is executed it kind of reminds me of the chris angel levitation(which i asume you are familiar with), i dont think many would have guessed that either.. i have loved and studied magic for 30 years now, but i would never have guessed magnetic sole :p
Way too late for the giveaway, but had to leave a comment about this video. Absolutely fantastic to see you following up on this! The simple methods can be the hardest to figure out. Wonderfully done, great prop and thanks for sharing the explanation!
Dude When I originally saw the trick a while back I was genuinely thinking wtf but knowing the method makes it even more amazing, I love your story that you literally just blagged it. That's my approach to life. I'm a beginner magician atm, I did 3 tables in a restaurant yesterday for mixed reactions it was very scary 😳 if the DVDs are still going I think I would benefit greatly from one! Much thanks Joe
Great job! Love the reveal. My 9 year old son would LOVE your DVD. He is real big into throwing cards (and card tricks in general). Anyway, cheers man!
Disappointing? It was incredible, very smart and not easy to perform and you fooled them. Also the suitcase part was not as promised, but was a very good distraction, it was smart. Very good trick.
👏 just saw your revelation.....misdirection and technique were well explained...your a great illusionist. Don't want a DVD...I'm hopeless at doing magic just love watching it....anyway I think I'm a little late for a DVD. Love your style. From an Aussie down under.
Richard Bellars: pls I still dont know how you wrote the prediction on the paper... or when. Can you explain it for me please? You wrote it after the Teller won right? How did you do that?
I still don't understand it. You say it's been written off stage and brought in, but how? There's no one bringing anything to the stage between the time they play rock, paper, scissors and You take the paper out of the shoe, otherwise Penn & Teller could easily notice it
Right after the rock, paper, scissors bit, there is a podium which has been brought out by stage hands. The people viewing at home did not see them bring it out (That part confused me as well since it was done off camera). The podium consists of the bottom of the guy's shoe and the paper with the answers already placed inside. It's the same one that Teller sticks that briefcase on. All Richard Bellars had to do was place his foot inside the bottom of the podium in order to snap his shoe back together. It took me a few viewings to understand how this was done, since they do a lot of things off camera that viewers at home do not see.
I swear I thought the paper must have gone trough your shoe. I was watching the show on Netflix with this performance 15 minutes ago and I thought: what if the score was written after the rock-paper-scissors part? No one is able to predict all these outcomes on the spot. I also thought the paper must have been shoved into your shoe. But after seeing your explanation video I'm even more amazed! What a brilliant idea and performance! And thank you for fooling us!
Such a great video...cheers. I, however, have this pet peeve about the show and these foolings. With some tricks, not exactly your trick but sort of, there can be several methods to doing something. A paper that goes down to a shoe, up a shoe, left to a shoe, you get the idea. And it's not hard to perform moves for different methods knowing that what is actually going on can't be seen. P&T then are essentially forced to guess. They might know all the ways a trick might've been done but they basically have to choose one and it doesn't seem quite fair.
+moriwenne which is why I was pleased with this, they didn't know this method. So they could have put forward every method they knew. Which I agree Is a flaw
Very clever gimmick. Thanks for sharing. Question: I was under the impression that off-stage 'help' is/was frowned upon on Fool Us. Is that not the case? Because if P&T know it's allowed, I'm surprised they didn't pick up on it immediately when a table was brought on from off-stage.
Great trick pleased you fooled them. Nice to see a local lad fool the great P&T - Would love to see the DVD or pick your brains one day a friend of mine Rob Tickner is always saying how good you are and I'm just getting back into magic after quite a few years away it's always been more of a hobby for me. Well done on fooling them.
that is interesting, i would like to go with the paper is going down, but instead it's going up, and that little time you got to get off the attention to write the prediction down on the paper, and lett it go into the shoe.. that's not a disappointment, that was satisfying, well executed, and brilliant idea to go trough! now you just make me curious on the last part of the video... 13:18 did you flip a double card? but i kinda doubt it myself.. 13:35 you snap it and the hole closed! this curiousity could make me loose some sleep dude! but that's what you called magic! and at the very last part of the video, i know how it's done :) but first time for me to say baby hand giving a middle finger lol.. thank you for this amazing video!
Fantastic work Richard. I had more fun not turning your show into a guessing game and being thoroughly entertained. This vid is a fabulous bonus track. That last bit sent me right to the "subscribe" button!
I wasn't clear before, but now I get it. The stand for the briefcase was brought in after the fact, allowing someone to write down the answers and and put them in it for your shoe to pick up. That's very clever, and I really can't remember what my theory on the matter was but I know it was this. If you ever want to do another spin on a prediction trick, you could write something down in front of everyone so it can be " proven " that the prediction revealed at the end was in fact written by you. If you say taped the " prediction " inside the ordinary hat you're wearing for safekeeping this would probably be the greatest way you could possibly present such a trick. Getting the " prediction " written down without using any existing methods would be a challenge , especially since it would have to be in your handwriting or at least really look like it is. getting it into your hat using a non existing method would also be a challenge. If anyone could make such a trick work , I think it's probably you. 👍
I couldnt figure it out on the show, but i did most parts on one of your own vids. Where you walked close to the bar.. still dont get how the writen paper got on stage!
Very very cool. This was one of my favorite "fool us" moments. The best ones aren't necessarily the ones that fool Penn and Teller, but the ones that make the audience say "How the fuck did they do that" and then discussions happen among friends and/or family. This was one of those for me.
Thanks for this video, really interesting. Did it occur to you to not get it 100% right, as if there were some additional risk in the trick? For instance to get Penn's dart score right but not Teller's.
Did the rubber gloves maybe also serve these two functions: to somewhat obscure the view into the shoe, and to reduce the sense of touch of the presenter who took out the piece of paper?
Loved your performance on fool us you routine is amazing you are very talented i wish you all the best going forward :) Even if i'm not chosen to receive one of your dvd's i will still follow you because what you do is great :)
+Kwinten Libbrecht This draw has been and gone but there is a bigger draw on the "propdog Vlog" video on my channel. Head there for s chance to win. Thanks for the message dude!
Were you sweating a bit when you handed the shoe to Jonathan? Seems like you wanted to make sure he tilted it the right way and you wanted to take it back quickly. Probably to prevent the shoe magnets from coming apart...
Clever. But if you were going to do that, could you not have simply devised a way to get a completely different shoe on? For instance a 2nd shoe hidden in the table? Or would that have been too obvious, or not easy to store/switch shoes?
