When I was in university, I was a serial procrastinator. I am the type of person who wants to be really good at what I do but for some reason, I just couldn’t push myself to do that with my university degree, and I feel like this is a common problem people have (you aren’t procrastinating right now while reading this, are you?).
My university degree was in Economics, but after graduating I did a complete U-turn and decided to teach myself how to code and get a job as a software developer instead of working in Economics or Finance like most of my peers.
So when I started learning to code, I was facing a lot of the same problems. I was “learning” but I wasn’t really learning. For a long time, I was really concerned that I could never force myself to learn to code well enough to become a good developer and get a job.
But then something started changing. I came to a realisation that would drastically change my learning strategy and end up allowing me to finally acquire the things I was learning rather than just shallowly learn & then forget them 2 weeks later. I came upon this change in strategy by accident, and in hindsight, it seems so obvious that I cannot even believe didn’t realise it earlier.

This channel documents my life as a Self-Taught Software Engineer as well as my journey teaching myself Computer Science & Programming. When I graduated from university in July 2021, I was still completely lost as to what I really wanted to do. I always had an interest in technology, so I decided to start learning how to code with zero experience, and it quickly became my passion.

What ever you learn on a course or tutorial. Immediately go re do it in a project, then re do it again. You learn it by repeating it yourself without a tutorial holding your hand.

Your theory makes sense, whenever i don't actually make something i learn it kinda fades out from my memory even after short period of time, considering how my current private school works i must work on my own to tackle that by creating something right away. Thank you for sharing some motivation. :)

I've been putting off learning to code for almost a decade! The first time i tried, i bought an arduino and began to learn how to do basic manipulation of I/O to turn on an LED or apply pwm to an LED, but I found most of the time I reverted to Googling and borrowing code someone had already written. The pure complexity of programming languages caused me to believe i was not smart enough to learn it. I gave up. nearly 10 years later, I have developed so much interest in artificial intelligence, smart home control and the idea that there is so much more i can do now than 10 years ago has re-lit my fire! I'm still not confident but decided that If i am going to actually pursue my interests and gain a new direction in life and my career, I simply cannot progress without learning to code. I have chosen Python as it seems to be the easiest language to learn so here i am, wish me luck!

This is such a great video. Thank you so much for taking the time to film, edit and then posting it. I definitely have taken this advice. Something I think a lot of people don’t know is that there’s even applications today like XL spreadsheets or Word that people don’t know how to use to it’s full capacity. I found out this guy at work was getting paid good money and working from home because he built out the Excel spreadsheets. I was like what!? So, every morning I try to learn something new in XL. I’m not making good money and not working from home but I’m on the right path lol

don't just write code. read code too. if you want to know how a library you're using does something, read through it. code is a language. i imagine the people who defend comments so much must virtually never read code, because imagine writing chinese for a living but never reading it, of course you'd want english comments to remind you what you'd intended by it. now imagine how messy your chinese will look to people who're actually fluent in chinese. :p

Where are you from? I can't pin down your accent. Good content. I believe that practice makes perfect as someone said. I also remember watching a doc about a man who took over his fathers restaurant. He explains how he disliked the restaurant business. It was not his passion, but out of an intense sense of obligation to his family he pursued this path. It wasn't until years later he discovered joy in the daily routines he'd created operating the restaurant. Years! I also remember hearing on more than one occasion that to become an expert in a trade one must practice it for five years. I don't know if it is true or a gross generalization, but I believe it.

Or in other words: pick a career, where you solve the problems you want to solve. Doing this solves the lack of motivation problem because you genuinely want to solve the problem, it keeps you disciplined and consistent through any dip, especially if you enjoy doing it. And like anything in life, if you're consistent, deliberate practice and revise your work along the way to make improvements, you will succeed.

Sorry to hear that, at this point it would take too long for me to type subtitles to make it worth my time, I'd rather spend the time making more videos. You can slow down the playback if that helps.

Dude you can reach more audiences if you add subtitles. because a decent english text can be translated into any language.

I don’t have the capability to translate my videos at this time. It would take too much time, unless you know an easy solution

Yaa its like that some time. But you should stick with it. Try to manage your destruction. I'am like this before but for a week i spend like 2 to 5 hours a day. Try it and feed me back. 🙃

Lol. I still remember how to type the for js syntax loop. for(let i = 0; i < 10 +1; i++) { console.log( i+ " this channel is awesome" ); } But meh. I rather type that with python. The syntax is a lot easier
