Carry business cards. It seems stupid and banal, but that tool has helped me get more clients than anything else. Even a little foldout booklet card for artists, or a QR code card. Something tangible.

For example, the three drops of ink dripped into three different glasses of water on your August drawing video, mirroring the three plumes you drew in that artwork was/is pure genius. Regardless how much you are involved in the video production or not, your investments showcasing your work are an incredible lesson in sales and media presentation as well.

I opened my youtube channel last year..not yet being able to earning money from that but hoping it will come along..now I'm 24..still growing with my skills and hopefully I'd be able to start selling my artwork once I feel my art is good enough to sell...it's not actually easy as he said but it feels good when I see I am making money, no matter how much it is, with the help of what I love to do and not what the society wants me to do...remaining passionate have taught me to plan with a calm mind, believe in the fact that it will take time but it will work out eventually, and so be patient..and lastly it taught me to be as welcoming towards the obstacles just as towards to small successes... I take commissions from individual clients with personalised reference images so I’m quite limited when it comes to prints. I’m tied to originals. I’ve dabbled in making time-lapses of the process but having no area to myself to focus on my work as well as capturing it (on top of prices for equipment). I’m hoping one day I can make it more stable for myself and not have to go drawing to drawing.
One thing you didn’t mention was how you create these videos. The production, editing, the design and rhythm of the videos is so professional as well as valuable to your audience. Do you do these yourself or did you involve an expert? I’m so distracted by everything other than my art...struggling for financial security, watching every penny, etc. So I try to diy everything. You’ve probably already made a video on this topic! Post a link if so, thank you!

The thing that sticks with me is my parents telling me, “Do something useful, Art will lead you nowhere in life.” I tried so hard proving them wrong but failed. I had an ex friend tell me, “Your work is good but your style is to small, people like big things you don’t think nor make big things.” Art sucks, but I’m still trying. Like a moth to a flame.
This kind of gave me some hope I just started university and thinking of how my art will affect me later and even now financially always was a scary point for me but this video really helped thank you
Hi jono , I'm Douglas mutebi, I'm really in a situation you are talking about you were in. In 2015. But this video gave me hope. Even yesterday. One of my clients told me that I look desperate but honestly I am. Because of what I'm going through. But good thing is that i don't rush. I give my artwork enough time, but honestly, this video has helped me, coz i know i struggle today , but I will be alright tomorrow 🙏🙏🙏, thank you so much, you are playing a big role in my art career .
1. Create artworks that demanded the viewer's attention 2. Streamline the process by getting extra help for things other than creating artwork. Get tools that minimize the time spent away from the drawing table. 3. Educate yourself about finances.

My wife's favorite joke is "What's the difference between an artist and a Mutual Fund? Eventually the Mutual Fund matures and makes money!" She says this in jest of course because I have been fortunate, off and on, and we keep above water, but there have been lean times where I wonder why I have no aptitude nor inclination towards the business side of art. This lack of business sense has made me deny the fact for many years and romanticize art and diminish the goal of money, foolishly! My bank seems to want a mortgage payment each month and stories of art and beauty don't seem to work... they still want money. hah so I work hard and watch others with less artistic talent move quickly because they have business skills and an online success.
I feel people don't value art as much as it is worth and they tend to overlook the fact that we as a professional artist need money to support and live our life and artworks . Thanks Jono! Loved the advice! But it sometimes becomes a bit hard to understand where to put more of our efforts. Few things seem to be great but are often out of control due to some limitations. And the things that are in control consume a lot of time and effort which makes it hard focus on our art.
Right now, im still living with my parents so i dont really care about my financial status, The income i get from my works tend to be spend on some nonsense luxury items, which is really unhealthy. Thanks jono for making this video, it opened my eye on investing and taking good care of my income from my creative journey.

Thanks for the insights Jono, excellent video as always! Finances are one of the major worries and I'm currently planning on setting up a print shop online. The only thing missing now is the artwork, of course. Passive income seems the best choice to keep a slightly less worried mind, eheh.

Hi. Your comment stood out to me. The reason I’m replying to your comment is that I recognise your are in the same position I was 20 years ago. Unfortunately I decided not to pursue art and ended up finding a trade due to fears of financial insecurity. 20 years on I have started drawing again (around 2 years ago) and just want to share my experience with you. I have dabbled in a small amount of commission work, no advertising just posting work on my Instagram account, I get a lot of interest and I have also sold many original pieces. People are always asking for commissions and asking can they buy my artwork, like I say this is without advertising. Im just about to kick of my art business with 100% commitment. The reason I am saying this is because I hope you pursue your career in art, I don’t think you will have any trouble in gaining customers who want commission work. In this day and age with the power of the internet, literally billions of people are your customers and you can finance what you need to whist you then focus on your original pieces. Concentrate on your art, keep improving your standard and you will make it. Good luck. 🙏🏻

Finally, you could say that I was unknowingly waiting for this video since a long time. I am pretty much going through the struggle as I also am an artist. All I have is a RU-vid channel and I keep posting timelapses of my artworks. I do want to earn from my sketches but people feel that my artwork is not worth it despite me working so hard for it. I am thinking about prints but I don't have any way to produce prints also I don't know someone who would make prints so I'm still working on that part. Hope one day I will be successful enough. Till then, I'm gonna make some more artworks to further improve myself. Thank you again Jono for the video. It gave me a lot of important insight as to how can I plan the next steps.
Great Video Jono! I have some nice drawings that some friends would like to have. I would like to make nice quality prints so I can frame them and give them as gifts for now! Maybe sell some in the future! I just can't find a place that can scan and make a good quality print. I'm in the NYC area. I don't want to use a Kinkos or Staples! Do you have any suggestions?
