Haha! I’m screaming inside like a little girl, but I gotta keep calm to be able to make drops and fetch that fish! Also, I don’t want to scare any other fish away in case my buddy was about to close the deal on a WSB. 😁🤙🏼
Yup, I had to wait it out until I could drop low enough or he cleared the boulders to shoot! It was really risky since it could have bolted in those waiting moments! 😅🤙🏼
Hi Spyros! It would be a pretty short video as I only have one big gun! 😜 I use a Bleutec Oceanborn 145 for my Blue Water gun. It has been a great, accurate speargun and taken nice tuna and shy distant Yellowtail! 💪🏼 What do you have for big guns? 🤙🏼
Great Video Peter! We know the wisest way to dive is 1 up 1 down with a buddy, but sometimes this presents difficulties with WSB as they are so skittish and you have to trust your buddy's dive prowess. What are your personal thoughts on diving fairly far away from your buddy as you did in this video? No critique, just interest in your thoughts. Epic fish, and surprised it didn't tear off with with side shot! Looking forward to the cook video next!
I advocate buddy diving (1 up 1 down) in all cases. In practice, as you mentioned, it isn’t always ideal in certain situations. So even though I have have formalized Freedive training, in these situations, I assume and manage the risk of SWB (shallow water blackout) by following a few rules: 1. NEVER push past my comfort level in depth or time under the water. This also makes for more pleasant dives. 2. I ALWAYS use a minimum of 3:1 surface intervals so that I am adequately oxygenated for every dive. 3. Have situational awareness, both of your surroundings and yourself. If I’m hyped up after shooting a fish and I can’t get help, I will wait it out until I’m ok to dive. I’ve abandoned dives only 20’ down because it didn’t feel right only to relax, wait more and then comfortably get to 50’. And if a fish is still hot in kelp with line around it, I can wait for help and when the fish is tired out before approaching. So, yes, I know it’s not ideal, but I try my best to mitigate the factors that can lead to a bad ending when not diving right next to your buddy. I still advocate for divers to never dive alone because there is no opportunity for help if anything goes awry. Thank you for the kind words about the video and bringing up a good topic every diver needs to be conscious of. Dive safe! 🤙🏼
Hi Jack! I don’t hunt up your way so not 100% sure I would be giving you the best advice. With that said, I don’t think it makes a huge difference with a gun that small. I assume you’re hole hunting or shooting in bag vis so any decent pipe gun, like a Pathos, would be fine. I would suggest going with a carbon gun if it’s in your budget since aluminum guns can bend (I’ve seen it). Hope that helps and thanks for the support! 🤙🏼
