A very interesting and informative perspective. I like the idea of these videos. I'm 20 years away from starting the loop but very much enjoy these types of videos.

We are former members of the AGLCA who completed the loop in 2004-2005 on a Cruisers 4450 aft cabin. At the time loopers were almost exclusively on displacement boats so I wrote an article for the AGLCA newsletter titled "Boat Selection Blasphemy", not sure if its still available. Bottom line I think you made a good choice. One surprise for us was the resale value of the boat after the trip. We had about 750 hours on the Volvo diesels and even though the engines are theoretically rated for 10, 000 hours we were marketing it against boats with 150 hours. We took a pretty good hit. Find a way to include the Bahamas and Canada, they were great parts of the trip. Have fun!

They key take away was, find a “Great Loop Boat”…..For me I buy and sell my boats every 3-5 years because for 30 years boating, my boating/cruising changes every 3-5 years. BUY A BOAT HOW YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT in your next stage of boating. “Dont buy a loop boat saying we can use this boat after the loop and cruise offshore after and vice versa”…Very few people buy a boat as their forever boat. I really like this series. For me the “loop” boat is next (Just sold my last boat)……..

Best advice I got was buy the smallest boat that meets actual needs, that's because wants do nothing but grow. That means get rid of stuff, you don't need it, besides you'll buy stuff along the way, then mail it home, lol. "Oh, one of the bedrooms down stairs"......yarrrr, shiver me timbers mate, land lubbers, gangway!

Congratulations! Regal makes very nice boats/yachts. My first boat was a trailerable Regal 94' 233. Pretty basic but made many long distance cruise vacations including Key West out of Key Largo. Later, with a Doral 2000 270SC, with a custom diesel genset and separate fuel tank, as far north as Montreal Canada. Your Regal 42 will be very comfortable with your upgrades. I still like the idea of a nice, distance, trailerable coupe type cruiser which Regal does not manufacture. Trailering to the Pacific NW, and places in between is an objective for many like RVing. The 28 Express is not suitable for distance cruising like my last Doral 270SC express, with best in class range, fresh and black water, or the recently discontinued Cutwater C28 LE coupe. There are similar boats but they exceed the 8'6" trailerable beam. Hmm! Have fun on your adventures on the loop, ICW, and elsewhere!

wow great video wish I planned better for retirement. Just learned about the Great Loop but can't afford it. I have a 20' Bayliner Trophy Hardtop that I fished Lake Ontario for 15 years. I am considering taking it to try . I camp and in younger days backpacked so I know a ton of minimal rations to survive. Watching videos and being on the water I just want this so much. I have a zodi portable shower with batteries and propane which I can stand on the swim platform and shower at night but fuel and potable water is the issue. My fuel tank(gas) is 62 gallons and I never checked the mpg on it . Does anyone know if this has ever been done in such a small vessel? I know I cant go thru the Welland Canal but have a passport and can go thru Canada. A lot more to learn but any input would help. Am I crazy? Thanks for the info from the AGLCA and wish me luck, I think I need to change my direction. :-)

The Great Loop has been done in a 20' center console, so it is possible on a boat like yours. The member who did so stayed mostly in hotels and traveled for a few weeks at a time, pulled the boat and had it stored on the hard, and then went home to continue working. They participated in our "Dock Tales" series a few months back. Here is a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bB0yHtp-Atw.html

Hello, a friend of mine is thinking of doing the Great loop voyage..he lives in Northern Ontario, so starting in Lake Huron, when would be a good time too start his voyage ?
@GreatLoop
@GreatLoop 2 года назад
The boating season is short on northern Lake Huron. Depending on where your friend lives, he would likely want to start in July or August and plan to be off Lake Michigan sometime in September.
@joedirt9600
@joedirt9600 2 года назад
@@GreatLoop that what I was thinking, September is a cooler month. And I suggested going down the west coast of Michigan in late summer.
@GreatLoop
@GreatLoop 2 года назад
@@joedirt9600 Yes, that's right. The only concern is that weather on Lake Michigan can get worse as September turns into October, and if you push towards November, you will start to have facilities closed. So, we suggest trying to be off the Lake by the end of September, but it can be done safely after that as long as you wait for good weather and call ahead to check fuel and dockage availability.
@joedirt9600
@joedirt9600 2 года назад
@@GreatLoop what about going click wise, down the east coast.
@GreatLoop
@GreatLoop 2 года назад
@@joedirt9600 Yes, that's certainly do-able. If you're doing the entire Loop, that means you'd be fighting the river currents coming north on the inland rivers, but it can certainly be done.

This is a podcast, so it's inherently voice only. We started recording the video to make it slightly more engaging on RU-vid, but most of our followers consume this as audio-only on a podcast app. When we can, we sometimes add pictures to the videos when we have them, and when time permits.
