Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

The whole thing about deciding majors at 17 is insane and I always thought the same as you said. Education as a whole is broken. What should happen is, let kids finish high school, let them work in places for a few years where they think they like and then make an actual educated decision about your major. Society is really shitty about not going to college right after HS though and you get judged but this needs to change. Sir Ken is the one that really opened up my eyes about how screwed up the education system is around the entire world is basically modeled for your typical 9-5 jobs after industrialization which occurred almost a century ago.

@may may I mean don't get my wrong you can definitely find happiness, and fulfillment in 9 to 5 but I don't think people should strive to get a 9 to 5. People should strive to find their niche and place in the world. I think if maybe HS students had access to professionals as mentors people could decide better. I also hate parents pushing their agendas onto their children. Let people be free. When you're growing up you only ever hear about police officers, doctors, fireman, etc lol. Like we have hundreds, if not thousands of occupations around the world. We need to be better and give more information so these kids can make better educated decisions. I finished high school this year ans I have no idea what i want to do with my life, so while all my friends are now in college, I am not. I was thinking about doing internships or something, but it is so discouraging that every company wants their employees, even their INTERNS to have experience already... but HOW am I supposed to have experience when I'm just out of school and I don't even have the chance to gain experience??? I'm just so confused

@@TheFern2 yeah definitely agree on that, but I think 9-5 is for ppl who want stability and safety and I think a lot of ppl want that. Ik rn I do cz I worry bout bills everyday. Ig if u reach a point in ur life where u don’t need a 9-5 then that’s great. Unless u have a lot of money or really good at something or what not then go for it. I myself I’m not super extraordinary person, I’m just another person trying to survive and trying to have the balance happiness.

What I can say is it’s all a game somewhat, “who can sound the better than the other person gets the job” Even though u don’t have experience you have to set ur self up aside from others (easier said than done) like she said in the video it’s also about personality and how you present urself. To whatever internship U want u just have to be passionate bout it, make them believe that and some ppl r willing to take the chance on u cz of ur spirt as a person. Ik it’s hard but there’s a chance. Good luck to u

I really envy Americans. Y'all don't realize how much opportunities you have. I have been working in Kenya, Africa for 2 years now as a mobile apps developer but somehow I'm earning less than $400 a month. It's very hard not to give up. But I'm happy that more and more women are getting into tech. I hope I'll be successful one day so I can tell people my story and encourage them in their tech journey ❣️

I live in Africa too (Angola) and the tech market here is beyond wild with some job offers requiring people to do 2 jobs but only earn 1 salary. I found that learning a couple languages helps make your CV stand out so you can get more offers and hopefully find a job that isn’t exploitative. Good luck Lillian

I resonate a lot with this. I am the first child and only daughter of an SE Asian family from poverty. I grew up saying "I want to be a Doctor" every time they ask me what I want to do in the future. I sounded and WAS so sure to the point that all people who have known me since know that I was bound to be one. I took STEM in high school and majored in Microbiology in college. BUT, I already have second thoughts even before starting uni. I realized that I do not want to be a Doctor and just wanted the wealth I thought they have because of their salary (found out they earn little compared to how much they pay for med school). But I still went with it, got good grades, eventually found out that I wanted to enter corporate, ventured out on business while learning about cells and dissecting frogs, shit happened, I stopped halfway through the second year, took a sem gap, decided to fvck it out and shift to another program a whole lot different from what I studied. Now, I'm majoring in Finance and have no choice but to be a first-year student again while exploring different tracks in business. I'm also planning to learn to code and explore tech. I had so many people, including my family, tell me I am wasting so much time when I am supposed to be in my third year already. But idfc. I KNOW I'll fuck up my grades and my life more if I stayed in Bio. Now I'm making progress in a career where I see myself in. No regrets.

Your story is extremely similar to mine but I’m the first and only daughter in an African family and I took a gap year in my second year from law because I knew I didn’t want it and everyone keeps talking about how I’m wasting my opportunities and resources but they don’t realize going back right now is only going to make things worse and everyone is pressuring me.

As a 28 yo I can tell you you still got a lot of time left. There is this fear that you wont figure out what you want for the future and you become stagnant. There is always a chance that you will choose something fitting and wont like something after a while, especially if you have no amount of work experience. The important thing to note here is though, do you want to make these mistakes now while you are 18 or when you are 26-27?

I just graduated from college about 5 months ago. I have a degree in education and honestly I hated it. I picked a degree based on something I was comfortable with already. Rather than interested in. Now, I have my first professional job, which I know isn’t where I wanna be very long. I’m switching into data analytics, through the Google certification, and it couldn’t be a better step. I was always afraid of admitting my mistakes and just figured everything would work out. Yet I was bored beyond belief in my course and never felt challenged. I also never felt I could tackle subjects like business and computer analytics, yet now I get off work and go home to continue studying. Never be afraid of something. Always challenge yourself to learn something new and different. Being comfortable is one of the biggest downfalls of so many people.

i chose pharmacy and on my 3rd year of university i started having mental breakdowns, anxiety and lost all my confidence i even developped a stutter because of stress and realised that i spent 3 years trying to convince myself that pharmacy was my only option that it was too late to change career , I wanted to stop but I didn't want judgement from my family .so I literally stopped going to uni for the 4th and 5th year and skipped half of my internship because I stopped caring for people and started to connect with myself and find hobbies research stuff and look up some more .I got my degree still and with a fairly good note even got a job . But I honestly hate pharmacy to the point where I daydream when I work . I started having health issues and yesterday everything hit me I don't want this I will never come to love something that I hated for 6 years I regret choosing this , I wasted my life trying to force it because I was mainly.scared of failure , I am trying to find a way to do something I am interested in without relaying on my family. In the meantime I have to suck it up until I secure some money . I am 24 and only started to know what I truly wanted and it's not some noble career and prestigious degree to hell with all that shit.

I didn't relate to anyone more than I related to you right now, I'm a second year pharmacy student and I hate everything about it from the bottom of my heart, but I can't do anything... I already wasted one year of my life in college 2 year in university in another country which didn't work out because of crash of economy in my country and my parents couldn't support me anymore, so I went to a cheaper country and started ALL OVER AGAIN!!! And now after 5 years I'm second year of pharmacy :), but I'm scared, I'm scared to let it go and pursue my own dream because of the money my parents spent and time I wasted over this piece of shit major. The only thing which calms me is studying computer science every day and not thinking about how miserable and coward I am and hope for some day getting a job with skills I'm accruing in a cs field.

There are various programs that teach coding for free, low fee, community centers, apprenticeship, or as a pay after you get a job option. I run across them when I’m researching other roles in tech. They are especially available if you’re low income.

I just cant believe how much this video resonated with me at the point of life I'm at right now. Right out of high school I went to school for photography, and I realized I didn't like my passion being drained to pay the bills. I pivoted towards healthcare and speech pathology at 29, I have almost completed a bachelors for this field and still often find myself looking at something else. I think the problem is I want to do everything. I love photography, I love art, I love science, I love psychology and working with people, I love working alone, I love problem solving and being creative. I have faith that the skills I have continued to grow and collect will end up all serving me well someday and I would love to have a life someday where I am able to do a little of everything like you seem to be doing!

I'm 17 and thanks to this vid, I think I'll be finalizing my decision to take a year off after I graduate from high school. A lot of people were against the idea but I stood by it because... I'm still completely unsure about what I want. The degrees I initially planned to take were all over the place. Plus I'm not really in the right shape to go to college. My mental state is very unstable and I've recently just gotten out of a depressive spiral. I have absolutely zero adulting skills and my communication skills are wack. I don't know what I'll be doing that year yet, but I have some options to explore and I'm willing to take 'em. I just hope that by the time college application season starts, I have a solid idea of where I want to be.

Also, even if you DON’T have a solid idea of where you want to study by the time you have to start doing apps, that’s ok too. I graduated college 5 years ago. I was a Linguistics major, then a French major. I was planning to get my Master’s in Translation after I paid off all my student debt. Well, my debt is paid off, and I’ve realized I don’t want to translate. I still don’t know what I want to do, but I have to keep moving !! Probably going to take a job as a dog trainer (had always been a hobby, never considered it a viable career) and maybe work at Trader Joe’s on the side. Fortunately for me, I had that existential crisis earlier at 17. I was aiming to be doctor chose pre-med subjects for my a'level and all but i just couldn't go on. Thankfully my mom is very supportive and made me realize i just hate my subjects AFTER wasting 2 years trying to study them. now i've started over with new subjects and mostly recovered from burnout after realizing i'm actually autistic. so far, i'm loving my subjects.

I knew I never felt like I fit into the college arena. I am the only one in my family to attend college, I struggled with a major for so long before I just said fuck it and picked humanities (history & English). I got the paper and went for a state job, I was utterly miserable, I lost an entire part of myself. I'm only just now clawing my way out of the pit I ended up in. I love being creative, helping people, and learning. I am sewing, painting, writing and taking care of myself again. I now have some direction, my job in hospitality sales allows me to have the mental capacity to be creative and start a RU-vid channel, a blog, and an Etsy. I feel happier and lighter. I'm going to be 32 and sometimes it feels like it's too late, but I know it's not. Thank you for your videos, they're so helpful ❤️❤️❤️

What I kind of envy is the amount of opportunities you actually had. You could choose a college in different states, you could take classes there were unrelated to your major, and you could apply for different positions in different companies. I come from a small state in Europe and I'm attending a uni in my hometown and I'm studying a major that I picked out of comfort but I'm not interested in (and I'm in my 3rd year finishing an undergrad). However, I couldn't just choose any major after HS because I have to pass several exams which cover basic info about that particular field so I would have to study for everything which is unrealistic. Plus they put math everywhere and I don't know math at all. I even have to pay money to take those exams. The least I can say is that education really sucks in my country. My family also doesn't have a lot of money so I can't study abroad. I also take on average 10 classes per semester so no time to experiment with different classes. They would overlap with my schedule and I would get zero credits for them. I can only take classes from my major. So I'm currently stuck, I don't even know what my real interests are and I don't have many opportunities for exploring. Companies here are also more focused on degrees than those abroad so no one would hire me just because I have the skill if there's no degree to show. But I just started learning to code because I don't know what else to do. I guess I could learn some skills on my own and I wish I could move out and get the opportunity to work abroad. Life sucks.

i feel you. i think we all have to start somewhere… what worked for me was opening myself up to the idea that i don’t have to get a job that i love straight away. in life, it can take knowing what you don’t like to figure out what you wanna do with your career. even though i’m hitting thirty soon, i’m still figuring out what i want to do. i take comfort in knowing that i’m a step closer because i now know what i don’t wanna do (the jobs that i’ve done in the past ten years). sometimes, we have to make it work for us in a unique way. after working for ten years, i’m gonna take a risk and fulfil my dream of studying because i could never afford university previously. a shift in mindset could do so much for all of us. baby steps, i hope you find a way to slowly work towards a life you’re content with someday. you can do this 🤘

Crazy how I read this comment and felt like my younger self was the one writing it! I was in that situation- came from a small city, limited opportunities, financial problems, etc. Things got better! I moved out of that place when I graduated and went to a different country. I was hella broke but that period taught me how to prioritize needs and wants so… Anyway, things got better for me so I hope and am confident that things will get better for you too! May I ask in which country you live in? I‘m from Europe, too. When I was 14 I had to choose an apprenticeship, but everything I would have loved to do was impossible since those careers didn’t really exist here back then and I had to deal with a career I absolutely hated. Also, I was not allowed to go to university where I live and neither my parents or I had enough money to send me abroad to study. Now I‘m 31 and after 16 years of working in a job I really hated (accountant), I will finally try to apply in a university abroad to study something I love 😁 By the way, I totally feel you in regards of how the companies hire someone. Even if you have learned a skill by yourself and you‘re very good at it, in Europe they will not hire you unless you can prove it on paper, like certificates, degrees, diploma etc.

I'm a dental student and I took it because (I didn't really look for any other options since my mom recommended I take the program) I just pushed myself to settle in taking this course since Junior Highschool, so I thought I really liked it. I also realized that I didn't like my course- program in 3rd year Dental School, but right now I'm still in Dental School (5th year student)."Sunk cost Fallacy" is so accurate for me :( , I am staying in my program because of it. I am constantly burnt out and am not learning anything anymore 'cuz I don't like my course anymore. But as an asian (Filipino) it isn't really easy to move/ change programs. I went from a really good GPA to barely passing when I reached my second semester of 4th year. I'm still looking and trying to figure out what it is I really want. ( I have to finish my program, cuz I'd feel really bad - "sunk cost fallacy" ) . Thank you for this

I’m 33 and feel so old already.. married and have no children but i feel so much pressure to have children because I know time is a risk now for kids and I haven’t gotten my career figured out yet. I fear that once i become a mom, it’s over for me. I’ll become a full time mom and military spouse. I don’t do very well with an overwhelming amount of roles because i tend to leave myself to the end when I have all these other responsibilities.

I studied law for 6 months and it wasn’t for me. I then studied film for 9 months and absolutely did not like this either. although i regret dropping out both times, it’s saved me money as i don’t have to pay for my college now doing what i love (business) and now planning on going into events management. i instantly subscribed after watching this video :)

I don't know why, but this advice made me think of getting out of an engagement. All the thoughts and feelings she mentions are totally relevant to being in a relationship you don't want to be in or about to marry someone and then you realize you don't want to spend FOREVER with them. Sunk cost fallacy sucks. Don't make yourself feel trapped on a path, in a career or in a relationship. There are always other options :)

I'm glad you've found what you're passionate about and what you really love. I feel like I wasted my 20s and early 30s until I finally admitted that I didn't want to be a doctor and dropped out of medical school at 32 years old. I tried hard to keep convincing myself that medicine was my dream, but in reality, like you said, I hated being in the hospital. Being a teacher terrified me but I didn’t want to admit it. Finally took me being absolutely miserable and having an existential crisis to realize that this path is not healthy for me and it isn’t what I want. Hey Tina, I am going through a huge career change. I have been a teacher for the past 5 years and I had it. I knew from the beginning that I didn't want to be a teacher for the rest of my life and I didn't really take the time to explore other career options till now. I am getting ready to quit my job to work in the classroom but not as a teacher and focus on learning some other skills like coding and writing to hopefully land on my feet. @@DoyinVoice I'll be real with you, I am not familiar with QTs but if education is the route you want to be on and you don't want to be a classroom teacher. Proceed in your direction. There is only one way that I would ever go back to education, it has to be outside the classroom. If you thinking leadership positions or services (ELL, ESOL, IEP, Therapist, Guidance Counselor. etc) support or perhaps a support for teachers in general. The field is in dire need right now in public. THEY WILL HIRE. I would also suggest looking in working for private schools. You will be salaried, that the great thing. You're off on major holidays and get paid anyway. I started making 45K a year as a first year and left at 49k. Private does act like a community but always do your research and know what you're getting into. I work at a corporation and I don't regret my decision to leave teaching. I am still coding and writing hope to make my passion project into an actually career. Best of luck!

I'm 20 and passed 2 years on studying at university right after graduating school. During the first year of university I was so motivated (I studied French language as a major subject in pedagogy) but then I started to feel burnt out. Didn't like neither the form of education, nor my classmates. I had depressive thoughts, started to skip classes for no reason and gaining low marks. iT'S SO NOT ME!! I tend to be a very striving and hardworking person...But I couldn't handle it and overall I left it. Since then I've spent almost a year working as a waitress in a hotel 5*. It's been a great and fun experiment and I've gained so much communication and teamwork skills. But it's temporary, I still wanna get a bachelor degree. So, I'm turning 21 soon. I still haven't realized what I'm going to do and study. I feel so pressed by the society for not being a student, it stresses me out so much, but honestly I really wanna be well- educated, it's been one of my life goals, so I'm def planning on applying somewhere.. Feeling anxious now that it's too late to start over, but I still have chances and opportunities to try something new. Hopefully I will be strong and do anything I can to be a person I wanna be. It just takes time. I think it's important now to try yourself in many different areas to fully understand what I am to do. Thanks for the video! it's so encouraging

I was in a slump and found this video that I saved to my watch later months ago. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I spent a few years at college right out of highschool taking random classes but life happened and I had to drop out and worked full time in a communications-type job for a few years that I hated. Now I am realizing my love for science and technology and am finally going back to school. I was kicking myself thinking 25 is too old to start over, that I won't have the "college experience" and feel alienated from my peers but now I feel grateful I could build communication skills, travel, and figure out what I wanted before jumping back in. I'm double-majoring in STEM and Arts rn! (Computational Mathematical Sciences and Music Composition). Gotta say, another piece of advice I learned after changing majors *wildly* five times in a row, is don't be afraid to take a minor or maybe double major (in most cases double-majoring will delay your graduation by about a year, but if you really love two things and it's equal go for it, but research!). Definitely try a minor before committing to a double-major, I have some hefty credit loads up ahead (18-21 credits). You only have to pick narrowly in grad school (My grad student friends tell me there's no such thing as a double-major in grad school). Also, don't be afraid to change your major, especially your first two years of college, a lot of the classes you're taking aren't major-specific but some general ed/elective stuff. A lot of my music credits are filling up my elective credits for my math major. And the classes that don't end up helping the new transcript, will give you identity capital. Even if I end up dropping my math major to a minor or either math or computer science (whichever my school has a minor for), being able to code as a musician just means I can write themes for videos games, and program all the sounds I make to the actions myself. Do what present you wants, trust your gut, and explore!

Sometimes it's so difficult that I want to give up. Today I saw a nice internship opportunity, but I'm not confident about my competence in coding and maths. Starting 4:25 is my pretty much my exact situation right now. I'm a bio major in my last year of uni doing all the pre-med stuff like research, volunteering, etc. However, I dont necessarily like school or care about much of the extracurriculars I'm in, so I'm dipping my toes in CS and looking into other things like, as you mentioned, bioinformatics. I know I don't want to do a masters program and I'm currently in that crisis where I don't know what to do after I graduate. I really relate to this! Im in med school 1st year now (in the uk) and it hit me that I never wanted to be a doctor at all… I just followed what I thought was the right path for me without much thought because I was afraid. I found comfort in a blueprint already laid out for me. But now I realised how oppressed I would feel if I went down that route. So I’m considering computer science cus I like the problem solving but I still don’t know if it’s right for me. It somehow feels like I’ll be giving up the life science side of things which hurts but I can’t really tell if it’s the comfort and familiarity of it or the actual science itself that I’m attached to.

I went straight to college after high school and I graduated with a BA degree in animation. I grew up as a very artsy/creative person and honestly I enjoy doing 3D animation. I am grateful being able to do gigs and internships, I got to work in small teams remotely too and I love it. However, it has been frustrating trying to get into the animation industry, I applied to a bunch of part, full time and remote jobs but so far rejection. I am learning to code on the side because at least since I am already working remotely, why not learn to code. I think I am getting used to coding but it is a learning process. I feel what no one ever told me after college is how hard it is to get a job even with a degree in hand, and I sometimes worry if my portfolio is weak or not strong enough. You know how Tina is like I didn't learn this in college or I'm taking a class in this in the video? I felt that in the video. Well I felt like it's me but with 3D animation lol. I hate the feeling that I feel like I'm getting rejected from jobs because I'm wondering if my portfolio or resume isn't strong enough. Like I need experience in order to work but if I don't have a job how can I get experience? I try to make my own projects and do some courses online. Sometimes I wonder to myself if I should have pursued Computer Science degree instead since it is a more "stable" career but then I saw the mass tech layoffs in recent news. I'm still into coding but everything just feels so hard right now. At least I feel like I'm in the right track knowing I enjoy working on my computer and remote work is a great option when there are not enough work available in person close to me.

I’d say- stop overthinking it. Just start being financially secure- find a decent job and just do it until u find sth u love, just be financially independent- earn some money, u can then start a business or invest in real estate, if u can’t find sth u love now, just do a job u somehow like and settle with it, after all life is all about experiences, it’s fine even if u don’t find what u truly want to do- or maybe cause u have so many things u want to do, u can’t decide and might never rly find what u love most cause u love a lot of things, so in my opinion just decide on sth na do it without overthinking (giving this advice cause I’m myself in a similar position)

I grew up loving art and still do art but I never really majored into it. I went to college for 3 years and dropped out feeling discouraged and felt like I didn’t know what I wanted. After working at a factory job for almost 5 years I really want to go back to school and considered going into accounting just for a “safe” stable job but I honestly have No interest in this field. I'm 18 and in my first year of English Studies and I really hate 90% of my career. I only keep going because I'm not sure what I want to do in the future and because it was really tough for me to make just one friend, so I'm afraid to change careers and find myself in the same situation but lonelier. I don't want to be regretting in a couple of years not having changed careers or not dropping out of college and maybe trying on the music field since I've been studying music for more than 10 years, but as you might be thinking, is not easy to pay the rent with your songs. I never said to anyone, not even my therapist, that I would love to pursue a music career because I feel that it would be impossible. All of this is why I developed anxiety and OCD and I'm still figuring out with my psychologist if I have depression or if I am going to get through all this shit in my head. Hey, I get what you mean that you feel that something might be impossible so you shy away from it. The thing is you don’t need to have everything you like as your career. Of course you want to love your career but that doesn’t stop you from liking other things as well. You can pursue music as a hobby for now and see how it might develop. Don’t put so much pressure for it to be the one thing you like. We humans like many things and I’m sure you’ll find a career you love and hobbies as well and sometimes they might switch or become part time jobs and that’s ok. Everything will be ok just have fun and try new things out all the time and you’ll figure it out. 😊💫

I just wanted to explore art but as a SE Asian who really prioritizes security, I chose to do research/academia instead (a much safer path). I just find ways to insert art into my work. It's not that much appreciated in the academe but at least I'm happy. Not fulfilled career-wise though. 28y and still figuring things out, my 17y deciding major was a huge mistake I wasted 4 years of college and I couldn't quit cuz I had no idea what I wanted back then, and sadly that wasn't an easy option in my country to switch majors I couldn't just choose any major easily again because I have to repeat a whole year so I would have to study for everything again for a year. After collage, I tried different things from translation to journalist to graphic design to UI/UX to right now studying and working as data analyst, and it sucks that I have to start all over at 28 especially that I've could saved alot of time and money if I could have tried more things at 17, But then again do what have to do and hope for the best outcome.

I have also had a very similar experience. Ever since being a high school senior, I didn't know what I wanted to major in. I just picked going into medicine because I thought it meant automatic success and pride. Where I live we can directly go into medical school without having to do premed, so I just went into first year medicine. It was very tough since the courses were very advanced and my whole grade depended on 3 to 4 exams all year. I thankfully passed the first year but still didn't feel satisfied since I just spent the last 5-6 months studying day and night for something I didn't feel was right for me. I wasn't comfortable learning about diseases or the human body on literal corpses. During the summer, I finally decided to leave medicine for good and go into another major that may interest me or broaden my aspects. I did end up choosing economics and business administration since it does open a lot of doors and oppurtunities for me. I am still on a gap year tho since I did not apply to colleges on time. I am taking online courses trying my best to be self motivated to get up everyday and work towards my future self. I really enjoy watching your videos and knowing that I am not alone in this and that we can shift our focus anytime we choose to.

I have a very similar story, except I changed my mind from pre-med/health science since freshman year of high school until the summer before senior year when I acknowledged that I didn’t want that (I’m a dual enrollment student have the prerequisites for health science basically done.). Then I spent most of the summer thinking of possibly doing Computer science, so I took introduction to programming (python) and C programming now. But I’ve started to feel the same way I did earlier, so I figured I’ll plan to double major in theatre and computer science. I’m stuck on whether CS is not for me or if it’ll get better and I just have to give it time. I’m a very social and extroverted person (hence the theatre), and I don’t feel like CS will satisfy that.

I just stumbled upon this video and I have so many bells ringing in my head... I'm currently a 2nd year in Industrial Engineering which I like but don't fully understand, meaning I am not even sure whether I like it or not. I almost switched to Computer Science a month or two ago becuase I was feeling disillusioned with my classes and my only escape was the Intro to Python and SQL course (data science) that I TA. I'm leaning the most towards data science as a career right now, but who knows? I could see myself being happy in environmental science, public policy, education (I enjoy teaching and talking), and everything in between. Thank you so much for sharing! I feel like there's so much I would like doing (but not enough to have a life built around it) and your story makes me remember that everyone else is feeling the same way.

I definitely feel like I've already put a ton of time into my current degree And no other paths panned out. So, I might as well keep going with it. But, I definitely enjoy learning about IT and cyber so much more. Maybe one day, i'll be able to come back to it.

Don't know how RU-vid managed to get so spot on for the vid recommendations but this. I'm really indecisive about things because most of the time, i enjoy learning about anything equally which results in me doing nothing. I hate the career path that I took (because thats where my grades managed to get me) and know there are no ways for me to ever work in that sector, so now i decided to stop the nonsense, quit and learn online about things that actually had my interest for a really long time, along with working part time.

been a database engineer for 8 years in a retail company and 8 years before that as an IT professional in the same company, they've decided to transform into data driven business in 2019, well it was all cool until they offered me to be the head of their data analytics team considering my experience in their data structure and their IBM AS400 system and I was 42 yo, from the first day I've noticed it was not for me, it was fine for me working with local data as I'm the one responsible for maintaining it and had hundreds of preset SQL queries that I used when I was their database manager but the issue was with the outsource data and raw data, spending a lot of time on cleaning the data made me go into a stress and depression and started to affect me physically due to the meds, had to quit after 2 years, data analytics is cool and I'm attending the Google course right now, but the work environment can make it even more exciting with all stakeholders collaboration, but being a lone fox in a hostile environment will make you miserable as a data analyst, BTW I'm also a freelance developer :)

The healthcare system in Germany is sucking the life out of its workers as the workload and the pay don’t match. Now I‘m lost and don’t know on what career path to decide (maybe CS, Chemistry or biomedical engineering). Reading this comments made me realise that I’m not alone :)

I have an economics major, and this part of life has been the most miserable one in terms of academics (yet the most delightful in terms of everything else!). Since day one i have dreaded to study it. The subject seems pretty good until you understand it, but in terms of application in qs and problems, it feels like i have studied nothing. I hope it gets better with time. Ps: i have my stats exam tomorrow, and i didn't enjoyed studying it even for a single min. Wish me good luck. And we will be studying econometrics next sem(it's basically an amalgamation of maths and stats required for economics based studies and research and even useful in data analytics.

I was working in Japan at near minimum wage as a teacher, loved teaching, but the situation didn't fit, and the life I wanted to live where I can still live humbly wasn't possible on my salary. I spent 10 years building up my life here. I now know if I want to live comfy in Japan I need a higher-paying job. My life in America is very hectic and honestly compared to living in Japan I dont feel very safe. Im already 30 but I'm taking a few years do develop my skills. I taught myself how to code with the help of a friend a few years ago but I didnt pursue it as a career till now. I'm also debating joining the military(cybersecurity) since I'm willing to invest the years to restabilize myself in Japan. My other option would be to land a entry-level position back in California as I'm lucky enough to have an amazing circle of coding friends already to help me. One thing I do know is that I did not regret me decision to quit because I made a plan for myself. While I dont know the exact path im going I do know I'm moving forward. I totally agree with not trying other subjects. I just graduated from life sci at UofT 😅 and purely took science courses and programs throughout 4 years. Now, I got tired of science and taking a break from school but I don’t know what to do as a career since i don’t have other backgrounds. One of the things that I regretted so much after I graduate.

this was my first "gap year". mainly because i didn't know what to study but now, after months of having huge existential crisis, i'm between choosing sociology or political sciences because it's what life has leading me towards to, but my family say that shit about money and that i should be studying or preparing to take the entrance exam however, honesty... idc, they are not going to pay for my education so they shouldn't interfere in my future :/ so i'm thinking of taking another gap year just to look for opportunities in this field and get a part time job while at the same time improving my english and continue learning italian and korean :)

I resonated so much with this as a dental school dropout…. I buried my head in the sand and convinced myself I wanted to be a dentist but I hate looking into peoples mouthes and seeing patients wince in pain as I probe their gum pockets. I ended up majoring in microbiology and I’m thinking of getting into coding / computational biology but the steep learning curve is scaring me a little

I also feel like children aren't exposed to all/multiple type of career. Sometime they were even set by people around them to only focus on few type of career that they don't know there are other path.
