This video is about the settings, lighting, lenses, microphones and cameras I use to maximize production quality of my RU-vid setup.
I have just finished building my new custom RU-vid studio into the garage of my new house. And while I agree that picture quality isn't everything, it SHOULD be the starting point. I dont know how to help you tell a good story, but I do know how to make you look pleasant while telling it.

haha this was too cool. i literally came from your 'what lens should you be using' video and it is the FIRST video that's ever actually gotten me to make a decision on what suits me and my face/space/kit 🤣 ...THANK YOU! I've also just recently converted my garage (6x6m) to a studio to start up video editing and hopefully content creation for myself and i can FINALLY say that using my Sony A7iii with the Sigma Art 24-70mm f/2.8 i am MOST happy with the 70mm 2.8! I finally look normal! I've literally been despondent for weeks not knowing why my videos don't look how i hoped they would and this was the problem! Space and distance! 🙏 subbed!

This was fun to watch! The audio does sound really good. Do you have issues with road noise from outside, or noise from anywhere in your house? And do you have the slider for your B cam just continuously going back and forth? Thanks!

Yep, the b cam just goes back and fourth forever.. I don’t cut to it ALL that much, I more often punch in to the main shot for cuts, but I think that motion just makes such a nice shot to occasionally cut to. Road noise is surprisingly not a problem. I’m sure if you cranked up the volume and put on studio headphones when watching my videos you could MAYBE make out a car going by once in a while? But I live in a suburb and there just isn’t a lot of noise out there. If like a garbage truck stops at the end of the driveway I’ll obviously have to take a pause. House noise is practically silent!! I am so happy with this new house, all made out of foam filled block, and the door between the garage and the house is steel and heavy. That was a surprise. For sure.

why are you shooting in 10 bit if you're not colour grading the footage? i absolutely love the way you explained everything, it was easy to understand.

Interestingly, when you have the Sony a7siii in HAVC-HS which makes the file sizes smaller with the h.265 compression, the only options you have are 10bit. I have it at the lowest bitrate, so 4:2:0 10 bit at 30mbps - vs shooting at 100mbps. I actually didn't know all that until you commented this and I checked the camera to SEE why it was in 10 bit!

@@NicholasJamesJohnson That sounds interesting! Perhaps it could be a great idea for a future video. I'd love to see how you've automated your background lighting, and having links to the products you use would be really helpful.

Very cool about the haze. I just finished up redoing my studio as well, but I'm quite jealous of yours haha. I tried a monitor while taping my last video but I found myself looking at it too much while talking and had to shut it off. Any advice about making scripts? So far I just wing it, which leads to a ton of editing time to fix mistakes. I wouldn't mind a bit more structure but I haven't a clue how to create something cohesive on paper.

@@ChaseJamison I was making a video in the warehouse that was like an hour of filming, and I was demonstrating stuff, building these immersion tanks for my other channel, but I didn’t realize that my main camera had overheated after like 15 minutes and shut off!! It was so much work to reshoot that I’ll always use a monitor now. It IS funny how hard it is not to look at yourself, though I agree. I script almost every word I say on this kind of video! I guess the only tip I have is to go on a long walk and listen to music that doesn’t have words, then open up a pages document and type out pretty much one side of a conversation where you’re explaining whatever thing to someone who you know pretty well.. Any time I try to just wing it, even with subjects I know pretty well, I always end up making the edit take SO LONG because my thoughts won’t collect and I say too much extra garbage. But if I write it first, for me at least, it seems like I can crank out a ten minute video script in like an hour, and then filming only takes maybe 25 minutes! I should do an ‘entire process’ video. I’m sure everyone’s process is super different.

@@NicholasJamesJohnson yea, I'll need to figure something out, my last video took about 2 hours of filming, but editing it down took countless hours of work to get it to 25ish minutes. My current format (unboxing instrument reviews) doesn't lend itself well to pre-thought out scripts, but I need that skill for the video I'm working on now. Funny story, I recorded something two days ago and my camera overheated for the first time ever BECAUSE I was using it on the monitor as well as having it plugged in. Thankfully I heard it turn off as I was shooting really close to my camera on a 16mm lens.
