Hi! I can’t say for sure what it was about my application that got me a full ride, but honestly I’d say it’s competitive enough that they probably consider your application as a whole (including essays, extracurriculars, awards, etc.). Hope that helps!

its almost my turn for college admissions (class of 2023) and your videos have helped me out so much. after watching your vids Rice honestly sounds like a perfect fit for me, esp the campus culture and setting, so I might try to early decision, is that a good idea or should I save my early decision for a safer school?
@MinaRyumae
@MinaRyumae 2 года назад
Hi! I can’t give you a direct answer to that question as everything college related depends on your personal situation😅 I personally did not apply to any school ED as I wanted to keep my options and did not want to be forced to commit to any school. However, if you have a dream school in mind, previous data has shown higher acceptance rates for ED. I would say though that I personally wouldn’t ED to a safety school because I would want to see if I could get into a better school/get better FA, etc. but the decision is ultimately up to you and your situation! I know that’s a vague answer haha but I hope that helps. Best of luck with your application!

Heyy, thank you so much for this great video I'm an international student and Rice is my dream college and I really want to go there, my school doesn't offer IB programs or any AP classes, I'm currently in my Junior year and I plan on taking 3-4 AP classes outside of my school, do you think taking a small number of AP classes will affect my chances of acceptance badly?

@MinaRyumae
@MinaRyumae 3 года назад
Hmm I can’t give a very concise answer because a lot of things come into play like race, annual household income, extracurriculars, etc. Plus I think there’s a luck factor that goes into things too. I’d say try to get all As from now on and take the most difficult classes you can handle (don’t overload yourself to the point where it’s too much for you) . Also make sure you have good standardized test scores, you’ll need to have really great essays, and have a decent set of extracurriculars that you’ve made significant contributions in. I hope that helps (I know it’s not a clear answer but that’s the best I can say haha) and I wish you the best of luck!! I’m happy to answer any other questions you have too :)

To be blunt but not insensitive, you need to up the game pretty big time. 3.8 with a very challenging curricula that includes a bunch of AP classes could work.

@MinaRyumae

The ECs you should do depend on what you’re interested in and what is available in your area. For example, since I wanted to major in CS, I did robotics and was a part of the leadership council of an IT club in my tri-state area, etc. I’d say just try to find clubs that you’re interested in and become as involved as possible (try to get leadership positions!). If you have a good volunteer opportunity (say you could be a cofounder of a non profit) then that would a great addition to your resume. Otherwise, if you only volunteer like 20 hours somewhere I don’t think that would do much for your resume. Hope that makes sense!

It’s hard to say and honestly I don’t think admissions have specific things they’re looking for in the essays (that’s not helpful I know 😅). But the best I can say is just write true to yourself instead of writing what you think admissions want to see!

I’m curious: did you use this bullet point strategy for other college’s Why College essays or just Rice because the word count was low?
@MinaRyumae
@MinaRyumae 3 года назад
Great question! I used the bullet points for a couple other essays as well. I used it for one Yale essay because it was a 125 word max and USC because it just made more sense to have that kind of format but neither essay was a “why college” essay. I also used it for a Caltech essay (also not a why college essay) even though it was a 400 word max because I thought it was easier to separate my ideas out that way. I’ll talk about that essay in a couple videos!

@MinaRyumae
@MinaRyumae Год назад
To be honest I’m not entirely sure. The year that I applied (the year that Covid had a really big impact on) I don’t think that they placed any emphasis on tests. It helped your application if you had a good score but didn’t hurt you if you didn’t submit. Now since we’re coming out of Covid the story may be different but I’m not sure. However I do believe that a lot of schools are caring less about standardized tests in general and more about extracurriculars and essays. I think if you have a strong application otherwise, you can still have a chance of getting in

does rice really not accept dual credit courses such as Engl4 and 3 DC and DC us history ?
@MinaRyumae
@MinaRyumae 3 года назад
It depends on the dual credit course and what material was covered in the class. What I had to do for each class I tried to transfer was collect the syllabus and some sort of weekly schedule, find which rice course the class matched up with, fill out a form, and connect with a credit transfer advisor. In the end, I was able to transfer about 2 semesters worth of credits

Misleading. Full ride means you don’t pay anything- even room and board is cover. Rice offers full tuition scholarships for income lower than $75, 000. Many of such videos claims to be full ride when it’s only full tuition scholarships.

Did it require a separate application? Is it renewable annually or is it fixed for 4 years? Minimum GPA requirement? Thanks in advance!
@FergusScotchman
@FergusScotchman 2 года назад
Rice doesn't really have merit scholarships very much, but it does have a very generous financial aid policy. That is, unless she received some award about which I am unfamiliar. Rice uses the commonapp but has it's own supplemental essays and such. You don't have to make a 4 year financial commitment; the prices always go up each year a bit. I love these videos because I have always said that it's the people at Rice that really make it special. I was surrounded by the most intelligent group of people I will ever encounter, and everyone was very modest. Get as close to all A's as you can, but if you take a stacked load of AP courses, getting a couple B's isn't a big deal. (I interview prospective freshman as a volunteer, and my son is there now.) I think it's more important to take a challenging course load in high school than getting all A's, but most students are going to have an unweighted 3.8 or above with taking AP english, calculus, literature, history, and maybe one or two of their choosing. I would say a "safe" SAT score at the 75th percentile is 1560, but scores of 1520 and above are in the average zone. At Rice, your essays, accomplishments, and experiences can go a long way toward making up for having a little bit lower SAT, I believe. If you treat the Rice application as something to fill out with cut-and-pasted essays and do a cursory job of showing knowledge of the university, it won't fly... guaranteed. Rice is special, has few incredibly gifted students, and offers a unique and elite education and life experience. The best thing you can do to make yourself stand out is to really research the qwerks and culture of campus life in preparation for completing the application. Come to campus at least once for a tour. I know for me and many others, you really need to honestly want to be at Rice to have a good shot at acceptance. I should also add that a higher percentage of early decision applicants are accepted compared to the regular decision applicants. But those applicants are making a commitment to attend if accepted, so there is probably a self-selection bias.
