Just wanted to say when I was young af I watched your videos religiously. I forgot all about you until last year but could not find your page ANYWHERE. Today your video magically popped up on my RU-vid recommendations. Watching your old videos brought back great memories, and I’m glad you’re still uploading(:
OH MY GOSH. JULIA!!!! girl, you are going to make me cry! i love this! haha. this makes me so happy, i'm glad you found it again :) maybe i should go back to being POTENTIALcelebrity... dear GOD. hahaha. thanks for stopping in
Doing the video interview this week for LA. I’ll be happy just to get to the panel because I’m the kind of crazy that thinks group interviews are a good time
HI SUMMER!!! :D This made my whole day, hehehe. I'm glad you liked it and i'm even more glad it was helpful. Good luck during senior year... it's such a beautiful time in life -- don't rush it! and YAY thank you for watching nightly pop!!! :D
Thank you so much for making this video! I just sent out my application last week and have been so NERVOUS! This definitely made me feel a lot better :D
@@gizanglyer5299 hi gizan! good to hear from you :D it varies within each assignment, although they are structured around the 9-5. when i did my universal studios hollywood theme park rotation, it was 9-5 but for a few weekends during halloween horror nights i worked 5PM-2AM (supppper rare haha). at focus features i worked crazy long hours, sometimes 8-7. and then some assignments give you no overtime and it's a strict 9-5 or whatever. it just varies! i hope that answers your q, let me know if you have any more.
Hi Mia, I'm curious about the housing. You said they help you get settled but don't pay for housing. What would you recommend, especially since LA is so expensive to live and the page program only pays a minimum page? Thanks!
I have an interview for the upcoming cohort in NYC, I know you were in LA but just a quick question to gain a bit more of insight on how I'll be able to afford to live - did you find that you had time for another job (bartending/restaurant industry) while in the program? Without housing assistance I'm just a bit concerned with the hourly rate
Yes, the hourly rate is painful girl! I know a few people who managed to have another part time job, but it's tough because each assignment will probably have unpredictable hours. If you find a part time job that is super flexible, it could work. Most people found a side gig from time to time, whether that was paid audience gigs or freelance designing or even selling some things on Facebook Marketplace. Whatever helps!! Good luck!
Greeeeat question! You're so ahead of the game! Start thinking of places you want to intern in college. Join lots of clubs that give you leadership and communication experience. Become close with a few teachers who can vouch for you and write great recommendations!
I was a production intern at E! News in 2015, a video marketing intern at Smithsonian Institution in 2016. At JMU, I was the video creator for my career center. then when I graduated from JMU I worked as an assistant video editor for the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics at a company called Monumental Sports & Entertainment. After that is when I joined the program!
Super helpful!! Do you have any recommendations for what to major in in college to go into the media type entertainment field? I’m a junior in high school and all I want is to work in the entertainment industry on the production/business side. Thank you for all of your help!
There's a lot of majors you could explore: communications, business, film/tv production, media studies, etc. etc. You can double major or even minor too. Do what you're passionate about!
Hi! I also went to JMU (go dukes!!!) I know this is so late but i was just wondering, i have some experience but not as much as some of the others I’ve seen apply/get accepted, so I’m a bit worried about that. Do you think if I’m able to shine through enough with my cover letter and questions, I would be considered as much as the other, more experienced applicants? Thank you!
Hi Ester, AND GO DUKES!!! I answer that somewhere towards the end of the video, so that will tell you all you need to know! Emphasize your leadership and passion.
Thank you! They put it on the official site when the application opens. Follow them on social media and they let you know when they post the application!
Hi Ethan! GREAT question. One I wish I had the answer to while applying/making a decision. There's a ton, one I know of at NBC called Writers on the Verge. Other studios and networks do it, too. Honestly with everything going on, they may have cut some of these programs due to budget. But subscribe to this newsletter (The Create Daily) by one of my former mentors, Felicia Pride. She emails grants/programs/applications all the time! us2.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=6dc1afc00adc00e168459d03e&id=d606609035
Yours Truly, Mia Thank you so much! I’ll definitely subscribe. I had a rotational internship with CBS planned for the summer but with everything happening I think it’s going to be canceled so hopefully I can find something new.
This video is so helpful! I just graduated and i'm home working rn to save some money so I can apply and hopefully work in NYC next year :) I really really want to do this program but i'm nervous about applying because I don't have a lot of work experience in entertainment. You mentioned that that might not be a bad thing, are there any other ways I can stand out? Love your vids btw!!
hi iyaga! just from reading this, i can tell you have amazing work ethic and passion. bring that same energy to all your essay questions and in your interviews! anytime you can play on your leadership positions/abilities and passion for entertainment, do that. depending on how much time you have this next year before you apply, maybe get involved with some sort of media/entertainment you're interested in (or create your own opportunity) so you can put it on your resume. do you know what kind of work you want to do yet?
@@POTENTiALcelebrity Thank you for responding to me! I wanted to update you because I followed your advice and actually just accepted a job at a tv channel in my city! Thank you so much for your help!!
@@munyofu10 YESSSSS IYAGA! thank you for the update, and for letting me know! that's so exciting -- i'm rooting for you :) enjoy the journey, much love!
Following up on this four years later (crazy!) I now work at NBC Nightly News!! I just saw you on the Kelly Clarkson show and thought “she looks so familiar” and once I learned it was you I had to give you an update. Thank you!!!
Haha, what do you mean? You feel like you're not qualified? I've talked to so many people (at least 5) through them watching this video and them reaching out, and they've gotten in!
@@POTENTiALcelebrity You had such a great resume of experiences before applying, which is probably what made you such a qualified applicant/why they hired you! I don't feel like my experience would be close to stacking up :( I just gotta keep trying i guess!
Do we need a Bachelor's Degree to apply? I graduated with an Associate's Degree in Multimedia Design and a 3.5 GPA, but was wondering if that would be good enough for the program. Also, is there an age limit? I'm 26 now... unfortunately I got started with college a little later in life.
I'm pretty positive, but you'd have to check the site to be sure. I just know you have to have over a certain GPA (can't remember) and they don't budge on it. There's no age limit, go for it :)
Hi! Love this video, thanks for making it so informative. I applied and got to the recorded interview stage (round 2 of 3) which I plan on taking today. Besides preparing a note on my computer / phone with lessons I've taken away from previous employment experience, what else do you suggest I prepare for this? The idea of timed responses makes me so nervous!
@@benjoseph6669 Love love love seeing everyone help each other out! Thanks for asking such a great question Ben. I would say the best thing to do is to not have your answer memorized (you run the risk of sounding like a robot) but to just know key points and part of your answers. Relax and pretend youre talking to your favorite person! Good luck!
This is a great question! It also makes me so sad, because we just totally get paid a living wage and not have to have two jobs. I think the program does pay more now, a little under $20/hr I think, but you'd have to check to make sure. I didn't have a second job while in the program, but worked overtime for some/most assignments and that helped me have an extra cushion! I talk about this on a recent episode of my podcast I host now (Two In The Morning on Apple/Spotify/wherever), but one weekend I walked down Ventura Blvd with my resume passing it out to restaurants because I was so desperate! Like I said, luckily, they pay more now and you have health insurance!
Hi Mia, thank you so much for this video! I just wanted to ask you whether you know if non-US citizens can apply to the program as I haven't found any concrete information on that front. Thank you!
Anytime - there is no limit. I joined a year after graduating college. One person I met that was a Page was in their late 20s; a few did grad school then the program. Mostly new grads make up the program - but up to you!
@@POTENTiALcelebrity Thats such a relief I really wanted to move to LA but COVID messed up my plans Im hoping to recover some expeneses before applying this could be my gateway - Thanks
Hi Mia, thanks for the helpful vid! Sounds like a great program. What are you doing once the page program ends? Does the NBC LA program require a 3.2 GPA to apply?
Hi Brian! Thanks for commenting :) 1. I left the program for a few months to explore being a marketing coordinator with a small documentary company. I went back less than a year later to become a production assistant with the late night talk show, Nightly Pop on E! 2. Yes, and they're super strict about it. I've heard of someone who applied and got all the way until the end but she didn't have the right GPA so they couldn't move forward with her. They do enforce it! Good luck!!!
