My How I got into Notre Dame video! This video includes all of my high school stats and accomplishments which ultimately lead to my acceptance to Notre Dame. What worked for me may not work for you and is not an indication of how Notre Dame accepts people. Rather, this video is a way for others to get a general idea of what a student who goes to a prestigious school can look like in high school (how to get into a prestigious college). It also allows me to capture some of my highlights on my channel, so that I can go back and remember those times as well. I walk you through my gpa, rank, course-load, tests/scores, my ib experience, and what I wrote about in my college application (college application advice). this is in no way affiliated with the University of Notre Dame--this is just my own personal experience

Enjoyed your presentation. I attended my 50th ND reunion last summer (graduating in 1973) along with a lot of my previous classmates. My four years at ND were some of the very best years of my life. I still go back to campus for football weekends on a regular basis and spend way too much money at the bookstore. My wife graduated from St. Mary’s (before ND went coed) so we always run into other old alums of both schools whenever we return. Your academic background is most impressive. Mine was not until I attended a prep school back East for two years. My grades increased substantially and I was the captain of a couple of athletic teams both my junior and senior years of high school. I also wrote a letter to one of the head coaches my senior year, informing him of my athletic accomplishments and arranged to meet him at ND during one of our breaks. He let the admissions office know that we had met and that he felt I would be a good fit both socially and athletically to the school. That meant a lot to the admissions office back then, as my GPA and SAT scores were the lowest of everybody else I met while there. So my advice would be, regardless of what your dream schools are, simply apply, keep your fingers crossed, and hope for the best, as dreams really can come true.

Thank you so much for this video cause I was always a huge fan of notre Dame and I go up there almost every fall I love the campus and the golden dome and the atmosphere is amazing. I always told myself that I wasn't good enough to make it there but this video inspired me to really try and challenge myself to not quit trying. I'm Catholic also and I love the basilica so I hope and pray that I can make it.

Congrsts on getting into Notre Dame! I needed this video sooo much bc I’m also the oldest in my family, I’m going full IB next year, and I really want to get into a business school!;) Can you please make a video on tips for IB students or your experience in more detail? Also, what how much and what types of prior business experience do you think is needed to get into a good business school?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Thanks so much! Yeah, of course I can make that video; that's a great suggestion! I don't think you need any prior business experience to get into a good business school. You really just need good grades and test scores plus leadership involvement. The most business experience I had was selling tshirts I made senior year!

Did you apply regular or early action? I’ve been struggling on whether to apply early or regular decision, any tips?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Sabine Garcia I applied regular! At ND, early isn’t restrictive, so you can apply and be accepted without having to commit, so I would recommend applying early in that case! Another benefit to applying early is you can be waitlisted, which allows you to be considered again. However, I didn’t use that option and it still worked out. Good luck! ☘️

I know this is late but this is my dream school so is there any information you can say, that help your application stand out. Like classes or clubs or volunteer hours?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Stranger Things eLeVeN hey!Make sure you take the most rigorous classes available at your school, do a few clubs that you are very active in and hold leadership positions in those clubs, and have a lot of volunteer hours. These are things ND definitely values. Also make sure you study hard for the ACT/SAT so your score is in the standard for the school (which you can find by googling ND average act/sat score). To stand out, write your free responses and essay about something you are passionate about and that make you unique! Make sure those essays show how you reflect the pillars of a Holy Cross education too! Hope this helps!

Hello! I was wondering if you know anything about the potential advantages of the CLEP program that the College Board offers. Is this useful at ND? My school doesn't have IB, but I have taken almost all of the AP classes available. And is it better to not submit an SAT score than to submit a subpar score? Thanks for the super informative video.
@melmggn
@melmggn 2 года назад
I haven’t heard of CLEP before so unfortunately I don’t have an opinion on that, but it’s great to take as many advanced courses as your school offers to prove that you can handle rigorous classes. I applied to ND at a time when test scores were mandatory, so my opinions on the test optional option is limited. In my opinion, I think it’s better to not submit subpar scores but make sure you have some other form of test scores to submit (like AP or IB scores) to show that you can handle advanced exams. Hope this helps!

@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Mia McLoughlin thanks so much! I did do the essay portion of the test and I didn’t take any subject tests. I think if there’s a subject test that relates to your major it could be useful to take it and submit it if you get a good score!! As far as writing goes, if you took the ap English Lang test I wouldn’t worry about it, but if not maybe consider it! Good luck! ☘️☘️

Not to be intrusive, but how are you affording Notre Dame? It is my dream school and fortunately I am blessed privileged enough to not qualify for any need-based scholarships, but I am not rich enough to pay for a $300,00 tuition out of pocket. Do you have any advice? Or any specific scholarships that give a significant amount of money? Any Texas scholarships (I am also a resident)?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Zinny A I received a lot of scholarships, but not enough to cover everything, so for the remainder of my tuition I had to take out student loans. I am not sure of any Texas specific scholarships; however, Notre Dame and other schools have clubs all over the nation (such as the Notre Dame Club of El Paso), and you can receive scholarships from them. Hope this helps :)

melmggn this has helped a ton thank you! Just one more question though, you mention in the video that if you get AP credits you aren’t allowed to skip a class, you are only allowed to take higher level ones. Does this mean that even if I have enough credits to do so, I would not be able to enter Notre Dame asa sophomore?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Zinny A yeah I don’t think you’d be able to. Since ND is a private school, we have a university, college , and major core requirements that you have to take. For example, you must take a math class for the university requirement, so even if you have AP credit for stats and calc, you would just have to take a higher level calc (that you didnt cancel). The AP tests usually just go to your elective requirements. I’m not an advisor though, so you should definitely check with yours! You should be assigned one soon, and they should be able to tell you for sure, but from my understanding, it is usually just an elective credit when it comes to the core.

Hey! If you still respond, I wanted to know if I have a shot at ND next year. I’m not sure I have the same merit as other applicants. I will have the legacy boost (thanks dad), but I only got a 1350 on the sat. My gpa is currently a 4.9, and im only enrolled in 1 ap class right now (ap chem) because the spots filled quite fast. I have at least 30 hours of community service, which will qualify me for national honors societies in the spring. Im applying for a leadership position on the MUN exec board, but I also run year round in cross country, spring rack and winter track. Notre dame is my dream school, but I don’t think I stack up too well compared to the other applicants or even people at my school. I might have some minor boost for being a mixed kid, but I doubt it. I’d like to hear what you think!
@melmggn
@melmggn 2 года назад
I definitely can’t speak to how great anyones odds are; however, it sounds like you’re creating a solid fountain for your application!! Definitely keep your grades up and continue doing community service. I would also recommend looking into the five pillars of a holy cross education and seeing how those apply to your activities because those are the core of what a Notre Dame education is! Let me know if you have any other questions.

@melmggn

Mylanah Derrer there was no specific area for that on the application I filled out; however, that should be obvious from your high school transcripts that your counselor sends in. There’s a little box on the common app that says more or less is there anything else you think the college should know. You can talk about that there. Another good option is to self study for an ap test or two but if that’s not financially or logistically an option do not worry about it
@miamispearsquad997
@miamispearsquad997 4 года назад
What type of scholarships did you apply for that helped pay your tuition?
@melmggn
@melmggn 4 года назад
Miami SpearSquad notre dame is need blind, so they accept people without knowing their financial status and commit to helping everyone afford to go to school here. So I afford Notre Dame through university scholarships and club scholarships that the school has given me. For me, that’s not enough to totally afford it (I still have to take out loans and will have debt when I graduate), but I’m getting a really great education for a really good price! I haven’t applied to any outside scholarships because I’m not really sure where to find legit ones! I hope that helps a little!
