Hi I have a question I am interested in moving to Switzerland and want to become a resident to hopefully become a citizen. I am an American and thinking of working there and live there someday. Do you have to pay for the French classes or are they free? I appreciate your content. I look forward to your response!

@SuperRosepat Hiya! Thanks for your comment and good luck with your planning for the move to Switzerland!😊 The ones I did I had to pay for. Sometimes, if you work, your employer will cover part or all of the cost of language classes. For example, my partner Mike gets a big discount through work. Sometimes there is a possibility to get free lessons, for example, through a church or the city council; I don't have experience with these though. There are other free ways to learn a language that we use apart from lessons, which include finding language exchange friends through Facebook groups, apps like Duolingo (here's my referral link - invite.duolingo.com/BDHTZTB5CWWKT5MC6T4A3BBKJE ) and Tandem. 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!

@@SuperRosepat Sure, you can always reach me here, on Instagram @ourswissadventure or via email on ourswissadventure@gmail.com 😊 I'm always happy to help! There are many jobs websites here, for example www.jobs.ch/en/ is the biggest one, it also has information about salaries and tips for making an application (I found that rules for CV writing here are a bit peculiar, so definitely make sure you read about that). Another way to search for jobs is to find a job agency in the area you'd like to live in and getting in touch with them. From what I've seen most of these agencies cover different types jobs and are not specific to one specialty (unlike in the UK, for example). And finally something to know is that unfortunately, for countries from outside of EU Switzerland applies a job quota system, which means that only a limited amount of people are allowed to be hired per year. There is also a lot more paperwork that the hiring company has to do. Therefore you'll probably have better chances of finding a job at a bigger or maybe international company that has more experience with this paperwork.

Hey guys. Congrats! You were super lucky to get a permit in 2020 while the UK were still part of the EU during so-called "transition period". As of 2021, the employer in Switzerland must submit an application for a work permit to the cantonal authorities. Which means ... jumping through a lot more hoops to be even considered for a B permit. Well done, good timing!
@OurSwissAdventure

We didn't realise that this was something they had to do now, I suppose that's due to the newly introduced permit quota for the UK? Thanks, we were super lucky indeed!🙂

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you for sharing your experience. I'm planning on moving there soon so I'm gathering as much info as I can. I read somewhere that as recently as last year, the Swiss introduced a language proficiency requirement for the Work Permit. Is that some sort of special requirement for non EU nationals? Sounds like a huge hurdle and something you would have definitely included in the video but figured I could ask.

You're welcome! You are doing the right thing by preparing in advance.👍 In regards to the language requirements, some viewers mentioned this recently, but I wasn't aware there have been any changes introduced. So I'm looking into this now. I'll get back to you when I figure out what the new requirements are.👍🤓
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
Update: So, after tons of research it looks like there are some requirements, but they most apply to people who apply for a family reunification B permit and for C permits. So there shouldn't be any requirements for your work permit. And even if you were asked about the language, you can just enroll into a language course in Switzerland and say that you are 'working on it' haha and that seems to be enough for the authorities. :D

Hello! Very good video, thanks. I was just a bit surprised that there was no issue for you staying longer than 90 days whilst waiting for the permit? Or was that because of covid ?
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 19 дней назад
I don't really know to be honest what the rules are about waiting over 90 days in the country to get your permit decision. Technically I needed to be in Switzerland, because they were sending the decision letter to the address in Switzerland with my name on it. And once I got the letter, I had a limited amount of time to physically present myself in the office to get my permit. I think normally you wouldn't have to wait so long for the decision, but as you suggested, because of covid they just closed their eyes to it. It was a pretty unprecedented situation after all.

Hey, I came across this video. Super useful 😊. I just had a couple of questions. I am currently a non-EU citizen and my wife is siwss. We both are outside switzerland , studying and planning to move to switzerland. I am currently looking at what could work best to start working immediately, or an academic career, perhaps in research. Do you know if applying and getting into PhD or postdoctoral positions would constitute towards a resident permit for me, or would finding jobs be a better bet ?. Thanks :)
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 4 месяца назад
Hi! I am not sure on that. But if your wife is Swiss I wouldn't worry too much about the permit situation, since you should be able to get it fairly easily whether you do a phd or get a job. Finding a job here, depending on the job field, could be quite difficult, especially for a non-EU person. You might have a better chance finding something in academia first (phd or post-doc) and then getting a different job afterwards.

There's nothing complicated about permits and there's certainly no dose of "luck" involving the process. The bottom line is Switzerland has an excellent tax system and standard of living and in order to remain that way, the local authorities have to make sure that YOU as an immigrant will not rely on the welfare system. Surely you can see when this is not the case what happens with nearby countries like Germany and their immigration problems (and ludacris tax rates) With that being said if you have an employment contract, your employer will take care of almost everything. If that's not the case get a lawyer, and they will offer you a few solutions: a ) show a a million or two in your bank account and you skip all processes and get your permit b ) show sufficient earnings as a self-employed individual (preferably 10,000 CHF+ a month). The only time you are going to have a problem and "hope" for the best is when you tag along with whoever got the permit and you are not legally bound to them (as in marriage), because they may or may not be with you tomorrow. So yah, of course you will be carefully reviewed, when you have no job, no marriage and you are simply there because someone brought you.

@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 4 месяца назад
No, that wasn't required for me. To be honest I am not sure if the language was a requirement at all. But I am not sure about the rules for others. We did a poll among the couples we know, where one person was coming along with the other one that got a job here and it seems like in some cases some form of language proof (certificate or course was required). But there was seemingly no consistency across the data we collected. The language knowledge was required a bit more often for the non-EU people. Still with a B, have to wait a little longer to qualify.

Hi Erika! Thank you very much for this useful information. I am planning to move to Switzerland and try to find a job there, my boyfriend is Swiss. I am wondering what it would be like to find a job! I am finding myself a bit stuck with the process, many companies have said no either because of the language issue, or the visa procedure. Any advice? Merci! ;)
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure Год назад
Finding a job in Switzerland is not easy, unfortunately. Even our Swiss friends have to send out tens of applications in order to get 1 job. Where are you from originally and which part of Switzerland do you want to move to? I know it's maybe not very helpful but my first tip is to keep applying. As I said before, it takes many many applications to get even one interview. Most of the time when you apply here they don't even respond, so it can be very disheartening, but you just have to keep going! Maybe you already looked this up, but make sure you research what a standard Swiss CV (either in the Swiss German part or in the French-speaking part) is expected to look like and try to adjust yours. I think a lot of the companies are quite traditional, so might just dismiss your application because it's done incorrectly. You can ask your boyfriend to help you with that. Another approach is to maybe apply to international companies as they might be more willing to hire foreigners and go through the visa process. Also, if your boyfriend is currently in Switzerland, maybe he can use his connections to find you some job just for the start. Sorry, I wish I could give you some more solid tips, but these are just some observations from personal experience. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!😊

Hiya! Good luck with your application and I hope that the info below is helpful for you! :) We had to fill out a form called 'declaration de prise en charge', which was basically to register me as Mike's dependent. Normally this form is used for when a family moves to Switzerland. Then I had to send the HR lady some information I already submitted to the canton previously, including: the copy of my ID, country and city of birth, place where I lived before, our Swiss rental contract, certificate to say I'm doing my French lessons. Also we submitted Mike's permit, Mike's proof of income (payslips) and his Swiss health insurance. And then also my European health insurance card and my CV in French. ...Wow! That's a lot of stuff! I never actually wrote all of this down haha!

Hello, So the AIRBNB confirmation ( 04:50 ) is enough for getting registered or do you have to get a contract? Thank you!
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
@Vlad Ionescu Our Airbnb host was actually kind enough to complete a form called 'Autorisation de logement (domicile principal)' for us, which effectively meant that we were registered as persons living at this address (we also had a postbox in our name, so we can receive letters from the authorities). So we didn't just use our Airbnb booking confirmation, we also used this registration document, when applying for Mike's residency permit. However, each canton treats the residency applications slightly differently, so some might be okay with just Airbnb booking confirmation. The main problem there is that you need to think, how will you get your post. It might be worth asking your Airbnb host to at least stick your name on the post box temporarily, so that you get your letters about the permit. Sorry there isn't a straight answer to your question, it's how Switzerland is unfortunately...

@@OurSwissAdventure Thank you so much for this information! Hopefully the host(which I'll have to find eventually) will be kind enough to complete the form. "The main problem there is that you need to think, how will you get your post" - I wasn't even thinking about this. I thought that I will have to return to the registration office in one particular day to get my permit. Once again, thank you:). As a side note: I've watched a lot of RU-vid videos regarding Switzerland and I've found your channel the most "complete" when it comes to real life scenarios :). Keep it up!
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
You're welcome. :) And yes, hopefully that will be the case! Another option is to try to find a short term or long term apartment straight away, then you can claim it as your proper address without any problems. I have a video about flat rentals here -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8la1evhW9f8.html Yes, having a post box with your name on it is key, since most things in Switzerland get done by sending and receiving letters. (For example, for your permit you will receive a letter saying - come collect your permit.) It's something we didn't think about either, until we got here. :) Thank you, it means a lot! :) If there are any topics that I haven't covered yet that you would be interested in, let me know and I might make a video about it.

@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
You're welcome.👍 If you are not from the EU, the company has to prove to the Swiss government why you are a better person to hire than a Swiss and EU person, which creates extra hurdles. I would say that international companies would be more open to hire non-EU citizens. Also for any foreigners in general, Swiss prefer to hire us, if we can work in high-skilled jobs. It's not easy, but my partner Mike, for example, works in a university research institution, and they have quite a few young non-EU colleagues there, so it's definitely possible.👍

I was never told that I have to leave and at the end my permit was made starting from the actual entry date, so all those months ago. I think the whole situation was impacted by the start of the pandemic as well, so might work differently in the 'normal times'. But it's an interesting question. Because you get sent letters from the canton by post to your Swiss address, so I'm not sure how would they expect you to receive them and respond if you are out of the country.

@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure Год назад
I'm sorry, I'm not very well versed on this subject. I'm assuming you both live in Switzerland? From what I know, countries tend to have different rules about whether you can actually get married there (sometimes there is a requirement of having stayed/lived there some time prior to the wedding). So you should check this for the UK. From our friends that got married here in Switzerland, it seams like the civil marriage here is quite easy and quick to arrange. The admin costs will differ depending on the canton (maybe even commune). In Neuchatel they require you to have a translator, if they see that you might not understand the ceremony. However, here a 'translator', can just be your friend that speaks the language better than you and can help you out. I think here as well there are some rules about the surname you are allowed to take on. I don't remember what exactly was allowed now, but if this is important to you, make sure you check it out before deciding.

I see. I'm not sure in which country the marriage would be quicker, since you don't live in the same country (which might complicate things as well). In terms of marrying in Switzerland, the easiest way to find out how it works is for her to go to the local 'contrôle des habitants' (the place where you sign up for permits) and ask there directly. They know the local system and should be able to help.

Hi! If you get a Swiss residence permit (because you get a job or start studies here, for example), your wife should also be able to get a permit, because of the 'family relocation' system. You are both legally married, so you count as family, and it doesn't matter that she's not from EU. Same goes the opposite way. If she gets a permit here because of her job or studies, you will be eligible for a permit too. Can I ask you what you mean by 'PR'?

A few questions: To get a student permit, it doesn't have to be anything super expensive such as university or college? It can just be a language school like you mentioned? From what I understand about what you said the student permit, after you graduate you can look for work in Switzerland and apply for a permanent residency permit? I am Canadian, so the regulations are a bit different, I think. During the time you have your permanent residency or a visa, are you allowed to travel or go on vacation? Or do you have to stay put in Switzerland for 5 years? Thank you so much for this video! It really helped :)
@OurSwissAdventure
@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
@May-Anne Arce I think you can have a student permit, provided you are in some sort of education most days. For example, our language classes were 3 hours per day, 5 days a week, so that is similar to what some uni degrees can be like. And it terms of cost, you'll find that these types of language courses are a lot more expensive than a university degree here. So I wouldn't rule out uni degree haha! 😅

As for staying Switzerland after your studies, here's an extract from SEM Directives § 5.1.1.1 from the governmental website below: www.sem.admin.ch/sem/fr/home/publiservice/weisungen-kreisschreiben/auslaenderbereich/aufenthalt_ohne_erwerbstaetigkeit.html 'As the stay for the purpose of education or advanced training is temporary , the person must also have the intention to leave Switzerland after having reached the purpose of the stay, i.e. at the end of the education (Art. 5 § 2 LEI). This provision also applies to students who wish to stay in Switzerland to attend a university or a university of applied sciences. Although they may stay in Switzerland for six months to look for a job after completing their studies and may, under certain conditions, have easier access to the labor market, the stay for the purpose of education or advanced training is a temporary stay. If the purpose of the stay is achieved at the end of the training, a new permit is required for a further stay (Art. 54 OASA). In principle, the person must leave Switzerland and wait abroad for a decision on the possible granting of a new permit , unless the competent authority for foreigners considers that the conditions for residence are clearly met (art. 17 LEI).' However, from what I know for non EU/EFTA nationals, in principle you don't get an automatic right to stay after the end of your studies. If you graduate with a Swiss degree such as Bachelor, Master or PhD, you can apply for a 6 month job-seeking L permit. For example, my non-EU friend that was on a language course with me had her permit expiry day as the last day of our course!! (crazy!)

Also we submitted Mike's permit, Mike's proof of income (payslips) and his Swiss health insurance. And then also my European health insurance card and my CV in French. I am not 100% sure on that, but I guess they would count by days and each year would be counted separately. So if you count up all the days you are in Switzerland, it should add up to at least 6 months in that one particular year. Does this answer your question?

Hi! Sorry, I don't know much about visas. But I think to apply for a permit you would need to obtain a work visa or a study visa or something similar. I don't know whether you would need to exit the country to get that other visa, but you can ask this question to the embassy. And also, it's important to know that to apply for any permit you will need to provide a reason as to why you should be given a permit. For example, you are starting your studies here, or have a job arranged, or are moving here with family. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give a permit to someone on a tourist visa.

@OurSwissAdventure 3 года назад
Hi Navi! Judging from personal experience, it's fairly difficult to get a Swiss residency permit without a job (or without being part of a study course, like a university). It is also fairly difficult to get a job here as a non-Swiss person, but that obviously depends on what you want to do here. However, with a European passport you can come to Switzerland and stay here for the first 3 months without needing a permit. In that time you can try to get a job here and once you have a job offer, apply for a permit. It might be possible to get a short-term permit for a couple of months (type L) without a job, but unfortunately I haven't met anyone in this situation, so can't say how often it happens.

But even then you'll often get forms and documents sent to you in German, the products in the shops will be labeled in German, people around you will speak Swiss German. So I think you'd feel more comfortable, if you at least tried to learn some of the local language once you move here. I think it depends on how close of a relative this person is. It is possible to get a residency permit here by family relocation; for example a family relocation B permit. @@naolgebisa3461 Not really. Actually in most cases, family reunification permit will not allow you to work. It will say on it 'permit without being allowed to work'. But, I think if you manage to get this permit, that means you can live in Switzerland legally and look for jobs. And if you manage to find a job, you can then apply for a new permit, the one that won't be attached to your relative and that will also allow you to work. A little warning though - finding a job in Switzerland can be very very difficult, especially if you are not from an EU country.
