Hey Christina (hope I spelled that right!) This was incredibly informative and super interesting. I haven't found a ton of Wildlife Biology-based channels, and I love that yours is very personal and experience focused. Definitely a great video, and thanks for all the great tips. You've got a new subscriber!

Thank you for sharing your story, it definitely inspired me to keep going forward to pursue my dream. I originally move from Puerto Rico to the USA to do my bachelors, after graduating I couldn't find a Wildlife Biologist position. I work as a lab tech and a vet tech and travel to Indonesia to do some conservation work. Now I find myself doing a masters degree in England and with graduation approaching next May I'm starting to get stress out on the idea of having to look for a job, but this video made me feel a lot better.
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 5 лет назад
Wow, that's a ton of travelling and life experience though! The lab tech and vet tech work is great for the resume, especially with your masters. I would definitely recommend using all the connections you can while you're in school to set up internships or potential research/lab work as soon as you graduate. A wildlife biologist position might not come right away, but if you can find a company that does hire them and work your way there that could help too.

Hi I am in 9th grade going to 10th in august so I have to tell you that I habe been wanting to be a wildlife biologist since 4th grade and now I still do but I have some questions 1) for community service should I work at pet smart to get some experience with the pets or can you tell me some good jobs for a community service ? 2) I have been so confused between wildlife and zoology like what I want to do, meaning I want to work outdoors help animals from going extinct taking care of them and learning about their environments but I don't know if that counts as being a wildlife biologist or zoologist so can you tell me something that helps my confusion of which one is right for me? 3) which university focuses on wildlife biology the most because I have searched a lot of them but I don't know if they are right like you've got a job and you have experience that is why I am asking and I hope you have time to reply and thank you for making this channel because I have not seen a wildlife biologist youtuber yet... and I hope you share your experiences with animals and the environment in your future video's

Thank you for sharing this video. Really put's in perspective that the struggle is real. A degree doesn't mean much today, however, your argument for having a thesis to prove your ability to write was informative. Fire Emoji

I'm thinking of going back to school for environmental science to work as a wildlife biologist and I'm really glad I found this account. Its both encouraging and a little scary to hear your story. I currently work in the film industry so I am used to working on and off. I was wondering if you had to get a masters degree?

I know this video is 5 years old, but I’m someone with VA benefits for school that I want to use at some point, but I’m not sure I want to use it for my current field of work (machinist). Wildlife biology is something I definitely would want to get into, but the problem for me with college is I’m a husband and a father of 2, and the nearest 4 year college is 1 1/2 hours away. I know Oregon St has a completely online Wildlife Biology program, but would it even be reasonable to try?

I have my undergraduate in Env. Science but am just realizing now how I want to do wildlife biology. I did a summer internship with sea turtle research and am now on the job hunt. Do you think it is possible to get a wildlife biologist type job with a degree not in biology? Clemson University has an online Master's in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology I am hoping to attend. Do you think doing that can help my chances? I have asked others for advice and they did not recommend online school however, that is all I can really do at this point in my life due to some medical issues, financial, and personal life. Thanks for any advice!
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 6 лет назад
If your degree was in Environmental Science, that's perfect! My degree was ecology but tons of my coworkers have enviro science degrees. I think that an in-person masters with a research and thesis component would be most beneficial for your money since that will bring the connections you need to get a job. I wouldn't necessarily recommend spending your money on an online degree in your situation, I think something more beneficial would be to start applying to wildlife biology internships or junior positions and volunteering with wildlife organizations would be better. Not everyone can afford to do unpaid internships or volunteer, but a year spent doing that is MUCH CHEAPER than years of grad school! And can often lead to a better job than a grad degree with no experience.
@emilyrobertson2704
@emilyrobertson2704 6 лет назад
Thank you for your reply! It is nice to hear that I still have hope doing something I am interested in with Environmental Science degree. I will try to get involved in more experience before considering a Master's degree. I just get worried about getting older and having a family eventually make it even harder to get back to school so was why I was considering doing it now

What are some of the other types of scientist you work with in the field, either seldomly or regularly, and how much time do you spend in a lab with you current position?
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 5 лет назад
Silver Ash good question! I regularly work with wetlands biologists, rare plant specialists, and aquatics/fisheries biologists. I sometimes work with archeologists and indigenous experts. I don’t spend any time in the lab at my current position as we send off any samples I get into labs nearby to save time :)

Hey! So I'm a sophomore right now and the fields I've been mostly interested in are wildlife biology and environmental science. I've done a lot of research on the two and I'm leaning more towards wildlife biology, but I know it's very competitive and can be unstable so I'd also like to have opportunities in environmental science. Do you recommend any majors that can apply to both and allow me to have more chances for finding work in either one? Thanks for the videos:)

I would recommend ecology or environmental biology as your major! That was my degree and it has been very transferrable to wildlife and environmental science jobs.

Would you recommend working for a youth corp for experience? I don’t have the money for college and youth corps can provide scholarships and also experience in nature and forestry. I’m wondering if you think that would be valuable for a career in wildlife biology. Thank you so much for your videos! I’ve been searching for a channel like yours.

@kristina_lynn 5 лет назад
Savanna Nicoll Yes I would recommend! I haven’t done it but we have a similar program in California called the CCC and we have definitely hired people from that. If you get scholarship money too that sounds awesome. I know they do a ton of restoration work and trail crew type stuff which is great experience for your resume

I'm from India and am thinking of studying abroad because here there aren't many opportunities for wildlife biology. So should I go to Canada or America?
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 5 лет назад
I would apply for both! Canada will be easier to get a visa to work after you graduate so if I were you I would come to Canada :) They have a "post graduate visa" for one year that will give you an opportunity to find a job and get sponsored to stay. USA has much more schools though, but I am not aware of a good visa to get when you graduate. Depending on where you go, I would be proactive and think ahead on how you're going to stay in Canada or the US since a visa is going to be your biggest struggle and what stops many Indians from coming to North America. Or, marry a Canadian like I did :)
