I like that he never sounded like he was trying to brag about all the hackings he committed. He just explained what he did in the most normal way possible.

I love when he said “I was kind of pissed off that I was getting arrested” like this is gonna be one of those chores that he needed to do before continuing on with his life.

I got the impression he had no evil intentions, he was just fanatically curious about how computer programs work, and how to crack them. He has developed immensely useful abilities he can now use in a responsible fashion.

You can tell he's struggling to go slow, his brain is too fast to go at that speed and stills explains things so simply and structured. My guy.

The thing is, they get arrested but they also get hired to work for things like the FBI, as these guys are obviously crazy smart. So they get hired for cyber defence

For everyone saying he’s not showing any emotion, he does...A LOT. If anything, he may be a bit shy/uncomfortable in front of all the cameras. He’s really trying to explain the best way possible.

My first “hack” was in 7th grade when I discovered the software my school used in Keyboarding class could be scammed/hacked. The teacher would make us type into this program with our keyboards covered and the test would be timed. I discovered that if I typed the first word, and then held down the space bar, the program would count that as successful typing. So I’d score these outrageous typing speeds and it was only when the teacher looked at what I actually typed and not just the score the program sent her that I was busted. The sad thing is I could type faster than most of the other kids without cheating. I just liked being able to scam the system. Sorry, Mrs. Waddle.

Having worked in IT security for some time, I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding of where the security vulnerabilities are. People are given a false sense of security, too. I will address these as briefly as possible, so bear with the long post. -ANY data that you put online, which is data that can be accessed from a remote computer, can be stolen. I am not fear mongering. ANY data. -The data that you access is saved on servers and the servers are targeted. -Routers are highly vulnerable and often used as an entry way to a server. Most routers were an afterthought, not built with security in mind. If you can update your router firmware, do it! -Your router board or server motherboard may have secret chips on them, planted by the Chinese government. An IT admin would have full network monitoring capability and would know if data was being sent to an unknown server. This first made the news about 8 years ago, however I have yet to see a follow up to it actually being verified. So take that for what its worth. Your Work computer: Your IT dept. tells or forces you to change your password often. That is to prevent a fellow employee of dubious character from accessing your machine. In rarer cases, to prevent someone who doesn't belong in the building in the first place. False sense of security given to public: You are told to change your passwords and create "strong" passwords to make you feel good about using a completely insecure platform. -The password for your online account does NOT prevent your data from being stolen. Remember, I said servers and routers are often the target. Your specific password has no bearing on those attacks. -Complex passwords do NOT equate to better security. The LENGTH of the password is what enhances security. You can have a long password that is insecure: 123456789101112131415 is NOT a good password and neither is 5555555555555555555. Common public vulnerabilities: -Phishing and e-mail. NEVER open attachments from emails of people you do not know. example attachments are pdf, xls, doc. Block and delete the email if possible. If it occurs at work report it to your IT staff. -never open links within emails. These often take you to malicious sites. Again, this refers to emails from unknown senders. -if someone you trust is emailing you something that seems really odd, don't open the attachment or click on the link. Text or call them and ask if they sent you that email. Chances are they did not. -never use the same PW for multiple accounts. This of course does not cover everything but I hope it helps people.

He reminds me of a book I read, it‘s called „perfect storm“ I think. It‘s about a group of teenagers that find out a us company is exploiting workers and decide to hack into their system to get the evidence to publish it via wiki leaks, while a secret service something is trying to find them and expose their identities. Really good book don‘t know how realistic it is tho

My brother hacked into his school stuff to show them how badly it was coded. Then all the girls started saying he’d hacked into the school cameras in their dorm rooms. Even tho they didn’t even have cameras…. Feel kinda sorry for him, he was only trynna do a good thing
