Harvesting my 20 Gallon Outdoor Worm Bin is quick & easy using a tray from my worm tower!! I harvest 3-4 lbs of worm castings almost every week as my red wiggler compost worms turn my food scraps and cardboard shreddings into natural fertilizer & soil amendments for my garden! The VermiHut worm tower trays have 1/4 inch holes making for perfect sifters!
It has been 20 days since I last fed so the compost worms turned a lot of the bedding & almost all the pineapple food scraps into castings! This bin has been running for over a year and a half so the 4000+ red wigglers and massive biota of microbes in here make quick work of anything I put in! Join me as I dig through the bedding to discover lots of worms and very few food scraps & other worm bin treasures!!
Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

That's a lot of scraps in there . I put mine in empty ice cream buckets , we produce a lot , and store in an old freezer. When I feed a bin , I grab a bucket full . I have a lot of worm bins , 3 towers , 2 trough style bins ,4 VermiBags and a home made sub box .
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 года назад
That is a lot of worm bins!!! You must produce an enormous amount of castings!! Do you use all these castings in your garden and to make worm casting teas? I'd love to know if it helps you eliminate having to buy fertilizer!! I have a couple of containers we keep in the freezer as well to collect food scraps as we go, but I produce more scraps (5 people in our household) than the worms eat so some go in our regular compost pile. Thanks so much for watching and letting us know about your worm army!!!🪱🪱🪱 Which type of bin is your favorite???
@Dee.C
@Dee.C 2 года назад
@@Vermicompost I don't use any other fertilizer or pest control , except fingers and a water hose . I do use all my castings for teas, spread in the gardens and yard . I send some to my sister each spring also . Her Asiatic Lily collection loves them and this year they bloomed bigger, brighter and longer than usual . I never really thought about which was my favorite. If I have to choose it would be the "Blue Whale" my hubby, grandbaby and I built in the garage . Check out Ann's Big Blue on Plant Obsessed . It is like that but I built the frame for mine because I have no built in shelf like Ann does in her basement. It is the easiest one I have . Set it and forget it, at least for a little while . I have so many worms in there it is crazy . It started as a hobby and a way to keep stuff out of the landfill that I could and has just exploded. I got inspired when I watched AV . I started with a pound of red wigglers and a 10 gallon tote , and now I have tons of them .

Hellloooo Anita!! Don't tell the other two but I think this is might be my favorite bin!! It takes whatever I throw at it and the worms just seem to keep multiplying!! My biggest fear with starting an outdoor bin was the heat in the summer, but these red wigglers combined with a little shade and a breathable, drainable bin can really take a good variety of temperatures!! I do like how I always have fresh worm castings available with this bin, and sifting it gives me a good look at what hard bits they take longer to eat. Thank you so much for all your support and wonderful comments!! It really is a treat to hear from you each video!! Have a wonderful weekend!!🪱🪱🪱

This is what I felt like was the best method. I am still so confused about the (360 ) bin system, i have a full second tray - they have eaten though EVERYTHING already.. not to mention that I had one full bottom tray too (castings) and I sifted that tray and pulled out all the cocoons that I could see. I removed all the worms first one by one, since I didn’t want to hurt them 🤦🏻‍♀️ and it took hours. I like your method better. Right now the castings are actually in a bin on the top level of the system in order to ward off the fruit flys in my garage. I check it daily for worms escaping and for some reason they keep going up there. Way better than the dang fruit flys!
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 7 месяцев назад
Oh wow, that is an absolute chore to pull out the worms individually!! You may have seen us do it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uH3xPs9T5s0.html where we absolutely drove ourselves nuts!! I added some videos in a reply to your last comment showing how I rotate my worm tower system to really get it running at peak performance without having to baby it too much! I think you can get your system running like a conveyor belt of worm castings with that method. It sounds like you are doing well and figuring out how to keep your worms happy and the fruit flies out!! I occasionally spray my bins with water from my rain barrel that has a mosquito dunks in it...this does a fantastic job of breaking the life cycle of fruit flies and gnats and after the adults die or you get rid of them...they never appear again!! Thanks again for watching our videos!! Let me know in a comment to the rotation videos if you have any questions!!🪱🪱🪱

I have seen other videos about worm farming and most of them agree to one thing; moist bedding. Yours seems to be on the dry side. I thought worms need moist environment to survive but looking at your results , it’s exactly what I am aiming for. I am a beginner and my casting is on the very wet side. I had to drill holes on the bottom to let the water out. I should have seen your videos in my beginning because now , I am enlightened on the subject. Thank You! You are a good teacher!
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
Thank you so much for the kind words!! I do tend to run my bins a little drier than a lot of folks but the videos make it look even more dry! Two of my bins, the VermiHut worm tower and this Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots, one inside the other, slowly gravity drain moisture so I find them to be at the perfect moisture level most of the time, never too moist. Occasionally I'll have to add some water to the Outdoor Worm Bin because it is outside in the heat. My Tiny Worm Bin is just a small 3 gallon tote with no holes and I almost never add water just use the food scraps to add natural moisture and regulate the loss of moisture with a small piece of bubble wrap over the top of the bedding. I do like that I can use my castings right away without having to dry them out...and the worms seem to be loving the conditions I keep them in!! Thank you!! I harvest almost every time I feed this outdoor bin but I always tell myself next time I'll film the actual harvesting...so I finally did it!! The worm tower tray really helps the process without having to buy additional sifters. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & for your long time support!!🪱🪱🪱

Have you ever wondered if worms could actually live in coffee grounds as their bedding?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost Год назад
Some times I wish I could live in coffee grounds🤣😂🤣 I think some folks I have seen have tried feeding coffee grounds only but with some carbon bedding as well. I add lots of coffee grounds to my regular compost to heat it up, but i think if it is aged enough it would be fine...I just wonder about not having carbon in with it for the worms!! Sounds like a good experiment for someone with lots of bins to try!!🪱🪱🪱
@cookie761

@@Vermicompost the more I thought about total coffee, the more I just knew that there had to be some shredded cardboard in there! I don't think I would try something that extreme, but when I look at coffee grounds... it looks like it would be a natural. By the way, I did my switch-er-oo on the tower and I've got all the worms out of that top tray. I have my cocoon nursery set up also! It was scary, and I'm not sure how I did it, and I don't remember what I actually did, because my memory is so bad and I have ADD....so, anyway, it's done! Whew!!!! I don't think I would have made it that far without all your input! Thank you and God bless you.

That's a really nice harvest. It would be interesting to see how many worms are there now since you gave away that two lbs. It's been roughly 2 months now right?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 года назад
That is a great question!! It's been 39 days since I gave away the worms and if the worms were previously at their carrying capacity of 6000 worms, then they might be close to repopulating themselves back up to 6000! I'm not brave enough to count them all but it sure looks like we are back at the same density of worms! Thanks for stopping by and asking a very intriguing question!!🪱🪱🪱

How often can I turn my bins soil? My bin is a little deep and I worry it might become anaerobic but I don’t want to disturb the worms process. This is my first bin.
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 года назад
I turn over the bedding in my bins every time I feed them which is about once a week. If you have a deep bin then you are right, it is a little easier to get pockets of fermentation and ammonia smells which can spread especially if things are very wet. I think mixing things around once a week to aerate it and see/smell how things are looking would be good for your bin and won't disturb the worms too much! Also make sure to add bedding every feeding which will help air things out as well. Once your first bin has been going for a few months it will be full of microbes and the worms will start oto noticeably increase in population...if you are seeing this than you are doing very well!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!🪱🪱🪱

Great video patrick. You and the lovely executive producer make an amazing team 👍. I'm always impressed to see the outdoor worm bin because the worms look so fat and healthy. In you have a great process for working it as a CFT from the top. Would you mind telling me what software you use to edit your videos and can you send me a link or tell me what to search for so I can learn how to add end screen images to other videos of mine pop up as you do on yours. (Hopefully I said that right) Keep on worming! 🪱

Thank you!! She is great!! This outdoor bin is a work horse for me!! For most of my videos I used iMovie video software which came standard on my Macbook Pro. I just recently switched to Final Cut Pro when I bought a new Macbook Pro. The end screen images are inputed through the desktop RU-vid software when I upload my videos. I think it is called end screens. You hit the plus sign and choose video or playlist and it pops up your latest videos and playlist to choose from. I hope this helps...I learned a lot from just clicking on random things😂 Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!!🪱🪱🪱

Great feeding Patrick! That looked like a ton of food. I enjoy seeing the process that you used for harvesting the castings. Do you think the bin will heat up much with the feeding? 😁🪱
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 года назад
Yes!! I checked it 24 hours later and the center was warm and the worms were mostly toward the edges of the bin so I mixed everything around and added more water...today, 48 hours later, the worms were all throughout the center attacking all the food. That was basically a little regular compost pile I made in the worm bin 😂 I really have to keep my eye on it in the summer when I feed huge amounts of food scraps and bedding!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
