I haven’t used card stock like this good idea, but I cut it face down and mirror the image so the beam isn’t reflected off the surface and any tinge on edges is on the back

I have tried that also but then I had flashback marks from the crumb tray. In the end, it does wipe off pretty easily, and because this is a backer you dont see any little remaining smoke marks. The bigger issue was gluing it to the backer. It is pretty thin so it was easy to bend or get wrinkles. The fix for that is I use spray adhesive to stick the red piece onto a plain beige cardstock backer before cutting. This gives it rigidity and makes gluing it to the backer much easier.

The border, being the outer circle of the design. You can see this at 4:37 That wood outer ring is covering the cardstock rings, that are making it easy to keep these flag layers as just 2 pieces.

I get it at Hobby Lobby. 12x12. $1.99 every other week, .99 cents. for my round flags it can be a little bendy, so I use spray adhesive to glue a plain brown cardboard looking sheet to it before cutting, and this makes it stiffer and easier to lay down. the brown stuff I used was 40 cents, normally .79 cents.
