How i leave the dock solo in a crosswind using a springline

This is how I leave the dock solo when there is cross wind. I loop the windward stern line back to the boat and use it as a spring line. I keep tension on the line while letting it out slowly. This keeps the boat to the windward side of the slip until I am almost halfway out. This gives me time to leave the dock.

I appreciate you watching and your positive comment! I am not that experienced. I started making videos of docking situations to learn from them, both good and bad. Then I figured others may get some benefit from them as well.

I'm using a much longer (windward) stern line to go out of the dock. This gives me more control. After leaving your box, the bow will swing to port side (in your case). You can try (like you did) to kick your bow against the wind. But you have two other options: 1. Make a 270° turn over port side using the existing rotation. 2. Make a nearly 90° turn to port and reverse out. There is no need to leave in forward gear. Both options are slowing down the actions on board.

If you would use a camera at the bow looking aft it would make the videos much more useful.

Go even slower on your throttle, just get the boat moving in the right directions is enough.

Agreed. Normally, I go from idle forward to idle when I start pulling the line onboard. This time, I thought I could do without going to idle. But as a result, I was just a moment late starting my turn. The rest is history.

@@sailingin-tuitionwithchuck Good to be in idle when pulling in the stern line to make sure it doesn't foul the prop. Love your videos as I always can relate to the content.

Agreed. I was carrying a little too much speed. But I do have to keep enough throttle to counter wind and current.
