Oooh you got your first sponsor! Your moving up in the world! Great video by the way. I stumbled across your channel recently and resonate with how you talk about things. Your a hidden gem.
After a chaotic childhood, all I wanted was calm, control, quiet adulthood. I’m old, and I don’t know anyone my age who wasn’ t seriously kicked in the ass by major, major unexpected life events many times. Instead of running from my chaotic childhood, it taught me to handle the major unexpected events in adulthood, and it took me decades to accept that and stop trying to create a life without chaos that doesn’ t exist anywhere.
I so agree with the "go with the flow" thing. I now tink myself as water, just going through obstacles and imprevedibility. I used to be so upset by sudden change of plans. But now I'm much different and also more resilient. We have not everything under controlo that's why it's important to learn how to control those tiny decisions that impact our lives just as much, such as how to use our time, how we eat etc.
You have given me my ‘Food for Thought’ for today. My family moved to a different state about 1 1/2 years ago and I have struggled horribly, I do not have the security I had previously, it has caused me A LOT of stress, anxiety, and health problems. This new place is exactly what you said, you can plan, but stuff just happens to you. You have reminded me of a forgotten rule of life for myself, If I am unable to change my situation, I must change my thinking around that situation. Thank you.
Travel and immersion combo without bashing & judging the people/place/culture one is in is such a life blessing. Best education ever outside of the regular classroom setting. Love your content.
I've given my life to Christ, and my life is in God's hands, so there is no need to worry about uncertainty or control. God is a good father, and no one can take me from His hands.
Well done, Austin. I think many non-western cultures also seek certainty which is, after all, the purpose of most religious rituals -- appeasing the gods through prayer and sacrifice to assure a bountiful harvest, that sort of thing. But in the west, particularly the USA, many of us have lost the traditions and values of our cultures-of-origin and have substituted the values of capitalism. We seek certainty through productivity and profit: our values are the values of consumerism. In more traditional cultures people feel connected to each other, they share histories, geography, dialects, etc. Many Americans don't have those connections to others. If we don't feel connected, but rather feel isolated, if we live in places without a sense of rootedness or shared culture (which describes nearly every American suburb), of course we're going to want to control, as we lack the sense of safety and comfort that community provides. Thought-provoking video as always and congratulations on your first sponsor!
I truly appreciate you coming every week to watch my videos and commenting! I must be doing something right! But yeah, I feel like humans need to feel like they're a part of something and here there is nothing bringing us together (more stuff that divides us), so we long for community. I think those DNA tests were so popular a while back because it gave people a sense of belonging even if they had no connection to the culture anymore. One thing though I do think is beneficial with the "no culture" aspect is that it makes people willing to make changes easier because there are no traditions, so change comes a lot easier...compared to many countries with thousand year old cultures.
@@tanzle I was going to reply to your own comment and then I read this and was thinking . . . oh its the same thing that Deborah just said but this is expanded. However your succinct comment was the first time I had ever read anything like that and I think of myself as being well-read. You hit the nail on the head and Peter expanded on it. I hope Austin does a video specifically on this.
We strive for certainty because in our individualistic culture we are expected to get by without the help of others. Community gives you the support to deal with uncertainty. Great video
Love your consistency in producing new videos! The quality of graphics is improving day by day. Above all it's the content that matters and in that you have succeeded immensely 😊😊
I often went shopping in the sales believing all those bags were such a cinch. Then at home you wrestle on where to put them all. Only to discover a year later you’d forgot to wear it and almost forgot buying it. Less these days for me is far more. Now I prefer visiting minimal art gallery spaces where they just change the pictures and art works every couple of months. The feeling of Space to me is important. Clutter is exhausting it trips you up and obstructs your view. Giving stuff away to charity was a real buzz too. I gave up gyms after the pandemic. Most were windowless with no views, often over crowded with sweat flying everywhere. I appreciate the big outdoors for all my exercise, and am far fitter and happier for it.
thank you. I have learned to go with the flow and it works wonders. Living an effortless life is the ideal life and I hope to continue to live this way!
I love your videos, and I know you're coming at this from your perspective and all of the travels that you've done. Which I totally love traveling and can't wait to do it again I did it in my twenties also, but then you have to settle down when you have kids and you need jobs. So, with 3 sons and having to pay for college and just take care of them for all of these years, you do try and create Certainty in particular areas of your life, you try and control what you can control and you try and simplify and organize what you can also, otherwise we would all be bold from pulling our hair out!
I believe that the simple things are often the best… great video Austin and thank you again for sharing your experience and wisdom with us! God bless you ❤️
Bro, this was... Really something. It helped me a lot, it's what I needed. I'm becoming a more go with the flow kind of person (I mean it's tattooed on my arm now!), and I didn't know what was bugging me but I actually think it's this. I want certainty, or I think I do. It's just the way we westerners have been raised, this unrealistic bubble of perfection that doesn't embrace any of the whimsical nature that is evident in reality... Thanks for this guidance on my journey to becoming a simpler and happier person, and also embracing the unknown... It's been a long journey here, but I sure am happy to be here :D
Where in South America did you live??? I feel like US is way more uncertain about tomorrow than some places in South America specially about job security and health costs (in US one health issue can make you bankrupt, some places in South America have free health care for all and a lot of protection for employees)
Ecuador...the country where the current president dissolved congress a couple of weeks ago to avoid impeachment. One thing I learned while in Ecuador was they're huge at making things look nice on paper, but they never actually follow up in practice. It's a nice place to live, though, and much more affordable (that is if you are a foreigner or have a stable job...which is rare).
mr williams. make videos about other topics. like how to pay off debt, bring in people with knowledge in different aspects of finance or life. make your channel more diverse in features.
What are your thoughts on the movie Fight Club? I was taken by that movie when I was younger and have lived it’s anti capitalist ways ever since. “The things you own end up owning you.” Tyler Durden
You should do a pushups challenge or something man. You're like myself naturally lean. But means our bodies tones well with bodyweight. I keep, exercise simple too. Can't stand gyms.
I live in Brazil, i 've always been poor and never even care about career or sucess. I have never been anbitious or competitive. I have always lived a simple life, thinking about yoga and meditation... But, i will be honest... I am not happy because of the povert and misery that i have to live in ... So i think we need kind a balance. We must have both, peace and things, all we need. Is it possible?
I leave my house and wonder what nightmare I walked into. People don't stop at stop signs. They race to get around me to slow down and other crazy things. I always thank God I arrived in one piece. I shop and chit chat with people who seem to appreciate the communication. When we head to Western PA we see horrible poverty...homes are in horrible shape...many have unreal clutter in them. Maintenance on these homes often is nonexistent. I am constantly reminded how blessed my husband and I are. My husband brings home a paycheck. I pay the bills and save for life insurance, senior care, unemployment, emergencies, etc. I want us to be prepared for the worst. I cant predict every bad thing so I have the emergencies category. We are cutting out modern conveniences and loving it.
I had such a wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Nantes, France in college for a semester. My written French was decent but this really gave me the skills to listen and speak bc hardly anyone in Nantes spoke English at all or well. I learned a lot of about French culture first-hand and other European cultures (esp Netherlands when I visited a friend there) - about how to slow down to appreciate each day. There’s good reason to have a large lunch break every day and a whole month for vacation 😌 Then in law school I got to do a 6 week summer program at Cambridge, UK and got to explore London, Ireland, and the English countryside and cathedral/castle (bc I would not get a rental vehicle but someone did so I just piggy backed off him and got to see things a lot of tourists wouldn’t if you use public transportation - including driving to the hills of Dover and taking a ferry to France, driving through northern France and Belgium to the Netherlands 😂 and back; driving to Scotland taking a ferry to Northern Ireland and driving down to Dublin; taking a ferry back to England). It was wild… that was more just fun. I meet a lot of young people who are somewhat disillusioned and I highly recommend traveling.
I just needed this. My father (80) is in hospital, we have to transform my parents house, so that he can live there, when he comes back. The future is uncertain, but it will get hard and my mother (75) still suffers from the loss of her little sister (burned herself in May, depression runs in our family). Everything seems to break and I could cry all the time.
Austin. Life is stressful. For reasons most of us won't be even allowed to speak in public. Just consider this: There is a big piece of cheese and around it a lion, a fox, and a rat. Who will get the cheese?
Like in USA, even if one is very frugal and undemanding in life, it is still stressful. It does not matter that you don't want to participate in some aspects of life, because you have to. The system does not give you a chance to set yourself free. It's how it's designed. It is so complex it gives one headache and anxiety just to abide and get the minimum life needs fulfilled. It's crazy. One would have to move to a different country like in Eastern Europe or South America or some countries in Asia to set oneself free, at least partially. I am living in California now but I had lived in Eastern Europe and I am telling you, the life was 90% less stresful while maintaining better quality of life.
what i learn as I get older is that the MORE you have the MORE problems you have. For example upgraded from a mobile home to a 2200 sq feet home and all I had was dropping thousands on that house for everything including paying govnt taxes. Went back to a tiny home and doing just fine.. most I spend is the electric bill. This generation is all about more more, bigger bigger. But Im going the opposite and doing less and less and smaller and smaller. I did gain more time and more freedom to live my life and spend time with my kids 24/7 now as well. No more missing out on my kids lives. Less really is more-! I finally understand this saying now that i am older and wiser
Great video again!...love hearing your thoughtful and unique point of view. I think about stuff like this, even though no one else around me really does. It's like everyone is worried about a badass car, a fancy wedding or a bigger TV. I know people with very little money and people with comfortable incomes and it's all about getting more, when I try to talk about saving money and eliminating excess items people (here in the southern US) look at me like I'm a little weird...
Ya the career consumed me. I may have just goofed off without the career but who knows? Life is more enjoyable now going outside and playing rather than doing the career.

Austin, your videos are not only educational, but also thought provoking. They challenge us to consider things, perhaps, we never think about. Thanks for sharing. Dios te bendiga, amigo!
We’ve been moving a lot and trying out different states/areas of the country and I feel a lot of judgment for it bc people don’t usually do what we’re doing. However it feels right to us. I think it’s good for people to think outside the box and not feel like they have to conform with what everyone else is doing. It’s been eye opening to see how life is just in different parts of the United States. It’s a very diverse country with so much variation from area to area. It expands your mind to live in a different place. I now find people who have never moved out of the area they grew up to be closed minded in so many ways.
Yeah, I feel the same about the diversity. I'm from the South and Colorado is very different from the South. Southern hospitality is definitely a real thing and people are way more friendly where they just want to say hi or have a small conversation. I miss it!
@@ElAgustin That's what I've heard! I've never lived in the south but we're actually moving to a southern state in about a month. I'm from the midwest originally (which has a wonderful and different vibe from the east coast where I currently live). Excited to experience the south for sure! We were actually debating between the south or Colorado for this next move!
In Sweden, we always stop to have coffee. There is even the concept of "fika", which means taking a break, often with a cup of coffee. At work, you take coffee breaks and chat with others. At home, we have fika and just sit down and enjoy each other's company and the coffee. Fika can be simple or it can be a real treat depending on the circumstances. Fika is an integrated part of Swedish culture, can't live without it!
Stop watching then. Hostelling about many different factions of topics under the umbrella topic of financial literacy, minimalistic living & intentional living.
It's a constructive criticism. Don't u think he is talking about the same thing over and over again? He needs to talk about a new topic to grow his utube channel. Otherwise people will lose interest like I did
Lol….this is what his channel is all about. When you want variety, mix it up with other channels as well. Or ask him a question that will give him a topic to consider.
He's still relatively new to RU-vid. It will take time find his voice. I do get the feeling that he legitimately cares to put out helpful content. What topics would you like him to talk about. I'm not trying to throw shade your way, and I know you aren't throwing shade either.
I'm so glad you partnered with Lingoda! I've been using them to learn French. It's the most comprehensive program I've tried (and I've tried a lot). Love today's message btw, really hit home.
