This is what I want to do next year. What kind of containers did you use for your tomatoes and peppers? Size of container? How many tomatoes and peppers did you plant to sell?
Wow! You hit some sort of nerve with this video it seems. I just wanted to thank you for giving such detailed information on how to start selling plants. I've been wanting to get into selling plants as I always plant way too many but because I am a person that must know every detail in how to do something before I do it, selling has never worked out for me. This will be my goal for the year. Thanks again for all the info.
LOL I know. So possible to do too. Ive done it. IF you start small you get the hang of it. 10 of the low containers I showed in the video hold 31 plants. Thats 310 plants of different varieties of cukes, zukes, squash, beans, and peas. The cost is about $70 for the containers. Gross at $2 X 310 is $620. I would just lay the container out with holes in bottom and plant outdoors. Frost days UGH. Move them in... other wise they grow right there. It works. Have fun.
Depending on what growing area you live in, you can also buy seeds that grow well in your climate. For me, I buy a lot of seeds that like moist soil and are more cold hardy as I live in the PNW. Good luck on your growing (and selling!) adventure!
I work in a grocery store and they get crates of green beans in with handles that they just throw away. They are about 18 in tall 18 in wide and 24 in long. These are ideal for transporting plants in and out of the house or somewhere else. They hold about 15 of the large solo cups . Also prior to Valentines day every floral dept gets hundreds of landscape type pots that are about 2 gallons I guess, needless to say I have more of these than I will ever use. very good video Gary!

Good work on all your videos.. I watch them as I'm chillin. Getting ready to start a bunch of seeds this week but we have had a ton of negative energy at home so haven't did any. Your videos are soothing to listen to while doing other things. In my indoor garden. Dont listen to the haters it means you are doing good things. This is fantastic, Gary! Some great advice here. I think the thing about where to sell them really depends on your location though. I’m in Texas and if we waited till May to plant tomatoes it would be WAY too late and they’d just end up dying in the extreme summer heat before you ever got a harvest. I think because everyone watching is going to be located somewhere different it is more helpful to to say the things like “start these things X amount of weeks before you want to be selling them”
Right, you have to adjust to local temps and change planting times. And Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C
Good tip about going with the shorter fatter cups. I accidentally got the tall skinny ones, and every time I moved my seedlings, they'd fall over and sometimes get damaged.

Great idea in using roasting pans and totes to move plants around! Moving all those plants out of the basement and outside takes a lot of trips when the black trays only hold about 15 Solo type cups. I do put a plant marker in each cup. That way the customer has it to mark the plant when they plant it. I bought 500 markers for $15 last year, comes out to only $.03 each.
Smart to help the customer for sure. Guess I could write on the cup and supply a marker. Ill be doing a full set up as it gets warmer here for a sale Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.
I take the large plastic cups from McDonald's (or any fast food) and cut strips out of the top half. I get about 8 per cup. You can write on them with sharpie and it will last most of the season outdoors. Recycling at its best.
I bought some thin plastic notebooks for .15 and cut me some strips from those. It holds permanent markers good. I have a midsize container garden and this helps me out.

Thank you for this info! I have been wanting to do this so will try next year - I had a client of my business give me 5 4' grow light setups so I'm thinking I'm ahead of the game. Just a note for some - check with your state Ag office to see if you need a license. In OK you can sell produce at a farmer's market with no license; however, if you want to sell the actual plants that grow that produce, you must have (as of this year) a $26 'grower's license' ... that on top of state, county & city taxes for the sales - so save your expenditure receipts too.
This is another great video. Bravo! Thanks for packing a ton of information here. This will greatly improve my own gardening channel and it will help me transition into sales. Since you’ve been doing this a while, do you have any life lessons or anything that you would do differently in regard to this process? Thanks again. Love your channel

Gary. What do you think about starting indoors on heat mats and after a few days of breaking through, place them in a coldframe outside and leave them there. Im thinking this will allow them to grow and not have to harden them off by taking them in and out. Im in the same zone as you. I would be curious on your thoughts. Thanks again!
Yes this works once they pop they can handle cooler temps. Grow lights as close as possible when they pop will give you closest to sunlight intensity as their baseline.
What has your price point changed to now with the inflation? Where are you located? Your price seams low. I'm trying to decide my price point in 2023. Thanks, this is a good video.
They are low. 2$ a plant really gets people to find you to start. $3 a plant is fair. Today I would charge $3 a plant with a discount of 4 for $10. All depends on your goal. Good luck.

I am in 9b/10a and I'm guessing that will impact when I decide to hold a plant sale, since personally I put tomato plants in the ground two weeks ago. I have an indoor grow set up. What would you suggest planting now so I can make money over the winter? Or should I just be patient and prepare to sell starting next Spring? Would people buy potted herbs during the colder months perhaps as house plants? I currently have a 48" x 72" full of healthy plants I can simply propagate but am thinking people will not want them in the off season...
Well the issue would be how would you sell them in the winter. Usually spring is best cause people are ready to buy and plant and you have a lot of demand. I would make a lot of the perennial herbs as they can even go out early and just grow and get ready for a big sale in spring. Get your Fall Garden Seeds & Spring Seed Starting Supplies at... In the state of Florida, in the county I live in, people are not allowed to sell plants at yard sales unless they have inspection and license with the Department of Agriculture, not just a retail license is needed. But people do sell plants at yard sakes, especially when they are moving. I guess the Dept of Ag is concerned about spreading insects, disease and invasive plants. The licenses are not too expensive for small sale nurseries They could fine people without a license for selling just one plant.
So silly. Ugh. If it is cheap and just a hoop, I guess that is okay. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I don’t think chives like to grow in the desert. I’ve planted a grip ton of chives, they germinate, and don’t grow, then wither away. How do you grow them so fast? Is it just that you live in a chive friendly geographic location?
Thanks for this! I’ve been looking for ways to sell plants. Your video is thorough and super helpful. Just a couple questions, how many plants do you recommend starting for your first plant sale? Also how do you poke holes in the cups? I’ve tried using scissors but the bottoms keeps cracking like a spiderweb.
Cups should always have holes. Really depends on how many people you think will come buy. But if it is busy at all you can go through 200 plants like nothing. Heat a metal nail and poke holes. It stinks but works on plastic. Please Visit my (The Rusted Garden) Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Humidity dome should ONLY be used in germination. Do NOT put a clear tub over actual plants outside as you eliminate airflow around the plants making the potential for disease thrive in that environment. The entire purpose of 'hardening off' plants is to expose them to wind to strengthen their stems which that humidity dome also prevents. Instead of a humidity dome limit the exposure to outside in the beginning gradually increasing daily.

So interesting. I feel like I have already invested in the fixed costs of the grow system for my own use and could do this right away. Do you have any sense of what % if the cost of good goes to potting soil or if there is a way to keep the potting soil cost down? I feel like that is where the bulk of my growing expense goes. I also feel like people will need to pot up themselves so do I really need to add compost and all of that?

Great vid! Quick question on acclimation....I live in Texas(9a zone) for acclimation using a greenhouse to start plants....same procedures? ps love your Gardening seminar on Roku Channel!
If the greenhouse lets in UV light, you dont need to acclimate as long. Sometimes to wind and temperature changes at night but the real issue is UV rays. Hey could let me know what ROKU channel you were looking at. I am actually not aware it is being used. You can send it to therustedgarden@gmail.com Thanks!
I love your videos!! I think I have watched too many of them at this point, and the information is leaking out of my brain. Are there any herbs/plants that I can plant in a big tray and just put them outside to grow? I am in zone 5 (NE Ohio) and it's early March. Last frost is usually in May. I am running out of space under my lights, and I want to grow a lot more plants. Thanks!! Love the videos, sincerely!!
Thanks so much. LOL. So the issues is the mix will freeze solid. Or it is so cold seeds dont germinate till the right temps come. So you arent really getting anything early. You can seed just about any herb and leave the trays out during the day and bring them in at night. That would be the compromise. I noticed you said to start cucumbers, squash, etc directly outside and bring them in at night. I already started my cucs under grow lights, just getting first true leaves. Can I transition them now to outdoors instead of under lights?
You can put them out. Its a timing thing. You just want them growing 4-5 weeks, after germination for the sale. Wait so do i have to acclimate the plants outside or does it matter on what grow lights i am using like sunblaster. Also dont you have to harden your plants
So it is UV rays the plants cant take without acclimation. If you have lights that produce UV rays probably not but I am not aware of that. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront.
