This is how I sorta, accidentally, made a knife from an old file. This is my first "real" knife making project. I have restored some knives in the past with mixed results. This was a fun build and I'm looking forward to more knife making projects in the future😀
In this video I go over everything I did in the process of making a knife from a file. I didn't use a forge for this project either. So I guess this would be a "how to make a knife from a file" video. Hope you enjoy😀
Some of the tools I use and recommend⬇️
Shop saw amzn.to/2CLEtmk
Jobsite saw amzn.to/2DfWdYa
Bench grinder amzn.to/2DiDL16
Angle grinder amzn.to/2COg1kx
Worn out file I used amzn.to/2CMJQlj
My favorite pocket knife amzn.to/2BehYWM
Second favorite cheaper knife amzn.to/2Dh7ZSd
Cooler version amzn.to/2BJmhe9
Mora knife I'm going to test this against amzn.to/2BH1VSL
And this one amzn.to/2kSXk7U
Camera I used amzn.to/2BFGpNV GREAT PRICE ON THIS RIGHT NOW!
Other camera amzn.to/2COp8Sm
Mic amzn.to/2kQwCg2

OUTDOORS55 Hey man, I love your videos and find them very useful. Thank you! Keep up the good work 👍👍 I was wondering what you think about sharpens best sharpeners, and if you can do a review on one. The company claims that they have the best sharpeners in the word. I’m interested to here what you have to say!!
@bpcustomknives4392
@bpcustomknives4392 6 лет назад
Matthew M I don’t think they are much better than any other pull through sharpeners. The difference will be very little if any at all. I love my wet stone and strop. Pull through sharpening tools would be good to have in a survival kit or for somebody who doesn’t know how to use a stone. I don’t have a use for one tho .

I have a few questions if you have the time. 1. How do you make the Scandinavian grind so even on each side while keeping the edge center of the knife?. 2. How did you come up with handle length to blade length? Thanks!

Gotta say it looks good. This video has inspired me to take on knife making. I too, am working on a file knife. My dad passed away 3 years ago, he was a mechanic so he had plenty of files. Figured, I just try it out. Know it has sentimental value to me and making to be a gift to my oldest brother. The pressure is on not to mess it up🤦‍♂️.

Beautiful knife. I use old files to make carving knives and chisels. I don't temper them but rather very careful shape the blade on a homemade knife making style belt sander. Once sharpened they hold a scary sharp edge even after much carving on very hard woods. I use old Farrier rasps for making larger cutting tools. If you search they are really economical used.
@FullDottle
@FullDottle 2 года назад
Just a thought; place some floss along the length of the blade before taping. This will provide a handy pull string to cut through the tape and make it easier to remove.

Have you considered using a dremel for some of the handle shaping or sharpening?
@bomaite1
@bomaite1 5 лет назад
When you sand, you can wrap paper around various pieces of wood or anything else that has the form you need. Dowels, blocks, cutoffs, or even an old file, if you haven't alredy made it into a knife. Buy adhesive spray that is just weak enough to release worn paper. That way you can make a custom rasp or polisher as you need it. I think this will speed up your sanding time and also give you more control over the process. It will also be easier on your fingers. The knife looks great.

Glad you finally dabbled with this! I went from stock removal to full blacksmithing. Been a very interesting experience. Hand sanding always sucks. That is really why custom knives cost so much. :) Next, look at a coffee can forge. You could use a benzomatic torch with a coffee can to HT and harden the blade. It will make the shaping process much easier. Lastly, with the blade on the belt sander, turn the blade around for bevel grinding.
@OUTDOORS55

Its a lot of work to make a knife by hand. Custom knives should probably cost more than they do!

What I do when tempering in a regular toaster oven is to add about 1.5 pounds of copper/metal to it, Then run it at 375 or so for an hour, take it out and cool it then run it another cycle for an hour at about 375-400 depending on the size of the knife and how thin the edge is.

The voice over is kind of nice, gives you a chance to fill in some different details when your looking back at the project rather than talking about where your going with it. I also love the wooden handle, I like the natural products most. I've considered when I make a knife using wood scales and pins because I have some nice trees in the yard I'd enjoy putting to use.
