In this video I show you how I designed a basic plywood chair and then weave the seat from an old camera cable. I call it the Camera Cable chair, but you can use this process to weave any plyable string or cable into a chair.

I've been looking for a new "makers" channel to follow and it looks like I've found it! This is absolute QUALITY. Educational, entertaining, and inspirational. Look forward to seeing more!

Thank you very much for the compliment! I aim to please :) there are a bunch of useful, semi-useful and silly things I’ve built over the last years, I’m sure you’ll find something else cool. Are you also into making stuff?

@@ProjectsandThings I used to be but I've been in a bit of a funk recently, so stuff like this really gets me inspired to start making things again!

@@EnjoySunlessDays 100% yes. And sometimes you get the most satisfaction from making a small thing that you’ve needed for a while.

Wow that is a cool chair Yves! And a great tip on the denatured alcohol. I'm guessing the RU-vid algorithm agrees with me, 15k views😮😮😮

Classic fork up. I've done the same or similar a couple times. Caught myself a few others. Nature of the maker I think.

If you ever do something like this again it might be beneficial to debur the cable holes, partly for looks, partly to give the cable a rounded edge to wrap around instead of a sharp corner
@ProjectsandThings
@ProjectsandThings 3 года назад
Fully agree with that, after i weaved (woven?) the first bit I noticed the same. Then was too lazy to unwrap and redo :)

Nice vid! You can use salt to avoid that two glued up pieces start sliding when clamping them together. Just sprinkle some in between the two pieces!

Dimi, that sounds like a tip I’ve heard before but have never tried. On my next long glue up I will, thanks!

Krimpkous heet heat shrink tubing in het Engels 😉 Wijze stoel! Wel een monnikenwerk precies.

Merci, I do love a good Krimpkous! Het was inderdaad een volle dag kabel weven :), geen zin om er nog zo’n 10’te maken :)

It will be faster for sure . But you don’t get the satisfaction from cracking your fingers back into position after 7hours of weaving :)

Waarom niet schuren en oliën voor het weven van de kabel? Lijkt me simpeler.

Great until the cable stretches... as cables do. I suspect it wont be long until you have to retighten the weave. probably just have to re weave it.
@ProjectsandThings
@ProjectsandThings 3 года назад
Could very well be. The design allows it to be re-done. I’ve also thought about adding butt-support under the weave if it should sag over time. So far it’s holding up great :)

Awesome job with weaving and finishing. But I tried to use a similar wire once to hang clothes after washing, and with time and effect of sunlight, they tend to become loose/weak. What's your say on this one ? will this hold for long ?
@ProjectsandThings
@ProjectsandThings 3 года назад
Hi Bhagat, thanks! I agree that sunlight wrecks plastic things, which I’ve found out the hard way. This chair will live inside so that effect is not in play here. As to stretching over time, only time will tell. I’ve never used this material before :) the weave is quite strong and each individual square only has to support a few 100 grams, since my 95 kilo’s of weight get spread over most of the seat. -I’ll drop a comment here in a year to let people know how good it holds up.

12:46 Was that a fart? At least it's a very airy chair :)

It was a leather belt squeak disguised as a fart. Perhaps with a small fart squeezed in? Very meta, we’ll never know

Yes I did. Does there have to be a point David? Sometimes creating something for fun is just that. Fun.
