Would this knife pass through airport security? Let me know what you think in the comments. Like I said in the video, it will really come down to the TSA agent who is inspecting you. I've seen TSA take fingernail clippers away from an elderly woman before, so, really nobody can say for sure if it will pass. LOL
I hope you all enjoyed this build video and please share your thoughts.
Thank you everybody for a great 2021 and let's have an even better 2022!!!
You can find more of my work on my website and information on how to order a custom Swiss Army Knife:

Amazon links to most of what I used to make these knives:
Victorinox Cybertool M: amzn.to/3pK65Uy
Brass rods for reassembly: amzn.to/3eRsYid
Ferric Chloride: amzn.to/31dfE4H
G10 for liners: amzn.to/3xEKK0C
Scales were found on Aliexpress. I do not have a link for them.

As someone that wanted a bladeless multitool, and ended up with a modded cybertool lite, I will share my own research. To pass TSA guidelines there are four important things to note. First of all, they might try to stick the "No swiss army knife" rule on you, because of the cross Design on the front. However, TSA guidelines clearly state that you CAN have a multitool in your bag, as long as it doesn't have a knife blade. You will probably want to make a sheath for it to rest inside of to be extra compliant. Second is the scissors. TSA states that you are allowed to have scissors if they are less than four (4) inches to the fulcrum. Since this is a small set of scissors, it should be fine regardless of which fulcrum the agent chooses to try to use. The third is the most surprising. The bit driver will fall under the "collapsible tool" rule, and must be less than seven (7) inches long when fully extended and assembled. The bit driver should just barely squeak by this. The last one doesn't apply to your build, but is good to know. According to TAS guidelines, corkscrews are permitted on the plane, as long as they are not attached to a knife blade. Hope that is helpful!

The problem i see is that it looks so cool that the agent might want it for themselves, thus trying to take it from you. I'd love an update once you actually went thru the airport with it

Yes, thank you very much! All info is helpful. Sadly I still feel that it will come down to the agent and how they are feeling that day and if you have the time to whip out the document and argue your point.

@@korgan7779 if you want to fly with a tool like this, you will be served well by having a paper printout of the regulations, so that if there is a "Problem" you can show that you are in compliance.

It is difficult to claim something is TSA compliant…because I’ve had a bladeless leatherman style confiscated on an international flight because of the scissors..and ive flown enough to know that it’s really up to what mood the agent is..They can pretty much say anything is non compliant if they feel it is.
@FittoSurvive
@FittoSurvive 2 года назад
Yeah, that really does make it risky. It'd be so much easier if there was a set rule that tools had to comply to without the judgment of a grumpy TSA agent.

I’m a flight attendant and have taken a few bladeless tools through since 911, one for over a year of getting spot checked , only to have it removed by a tsa agent that probably wanted it for himself. While in uniform I can’t really argue my point as it gets me in trouble , I just have to roll with it . Multi tools are useful for us as we have stuff in the galleys that need tightening sometimes and all of the hotel windows are often screwed shut, posing an evacuation risk . It really is up to agents at tsa and if they want your stuff. There is no guideline of any sort just a no blade rule. Small scissors are allowed , and then you have the 12 inch knitting needles that are allowed so none of it makes any sense at all. I’m currently carrying a Gerber shard and a cheap set of Amazon mini pliers . I’ve had one shard confiscated, after hanging in there for 6 months .

holy crap. that's beautiful and it would be a shame if the TSA confiscated it :O I had a security agent in Australia confiscate a Leatherman Style PS which was designed from Leatherman to be TSA-friendly. First he pointed at the file and said it had a knife, I told him it was a file and he stared at me with a dull look in his eyes and then just flatly said I couldn't have it. It never even occurred to me that these things can be so highly customized, excellent work!

I personally wouldn't try to take it on the plane only because if they didn't allow it, they might confiscate it unless you have a way to mail it back home? It may make the first leg, but the return flight may get it captured. I lost a white handled Swiss climber at the airport because I forgot I had it in my backpack. The TSA kept it. I forgot to put it back in the checked bag.

Hey! Thank you for subscribing! The person I made this knife for said that he plans to fly with it. He's a flight medic and said that he flies often. But definitely it is a risk every time. TSA's website gives rules for flying with a multitool, but say that the final decision is up to the TSA agent inspecting you.

I am again amazed at your tech and artistry skills...I like the color combination and can see the effort and care needed to get the tools and the other elements of the build to look the way they do...beautiful...I hate to sound uncharitable, but I believe the tool will be "nicked" because it looks so good and the scissors will be the excuse...Personally though, I don't see any reason why there would be a problem...Many thanks to you for all your efforts during 2021, I have enjoyed your videos; seeing you make practical tools with an esthetic bent to them...I am pleased to see your growth during this year, much deserved...May you, your wife and yours have a happy, prosperous New Year with many blessings and continued success!

Hey! Glad to hear that! I have not been able to source the 2.2 mm brass rods from anywhere except for China. I have never drilled out the middle tools to 2.5.

That's awesome build as always by the expert. and thank you for sharing the knowledge. have you ever try to build one with titanium as the liners? is it possible to make the liners thinner than 1mm by using titanium?
@FittoSurvive
@FittoSurvive 2 года назад
Thank you! I actually have a sheet of 1mm titanium in my shop, I plan to make some liners from it some day. I wouldn't want to go any thinner than 1mm because the liners is what gives the knife its structural stability.

Looking good! What is that other knife on this video? One with a beltclip?

Thanks! That is a Victorinox Camper that I modified. It has a aquaprinted scales and the belt clip is a Swissqlip. Here's a link to the clip: amzn.to/3GupRYY

Really good instructive video. Have a couple of old SAK's to refurbish and this was of great help. Is this the right material for the liners (G-10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate)? This particular build was very cool. I wonder if pliers instead of scissors might make another good mod? Thanks again. Stu NZ

Glad to hear that! Yes, G10 is the right material for the custom liners. The pliers are a handy tool to have.

You would think by now there would a Swiss style knife system out there that you can choose what you want to carry for the day. Make it east to swap out components like a quick connect/ disconnect system maybe? I think they would be very popular with folks.
@FittoSurvive
@FittoSurvive 2 года назад
That would be a major breakthrough for Victorinox. Having a modular Swiss Army Knife would be very popular for sure.

I usually have my cybertool with me while travelling if I'm checking in luggage. We visited Legoland a few years ago and I wasn't allowed to bring it into the park because...of the screwdriver parts. The blades were not a problem 🙂
@FittoSurvive

What??? Because of the screwdriver? 🤣 That's crazy. They must have thought that you'd take something apart...
