How I make a wood American Flag. Here in this video I will take you through steps I take to make my Flag wall hangings or Wood US Flags.
I really enjoy the time, patience, and even the mistakes I make when making these. Every flag made is an opportunity to improve. To recognize where we could have done better. These wood American Flags are a great way to show one's craftsmanship and dedication to bringing their creation to life.
One day your wood US flag will be a flag wall hanging on someone's office wall, living room, or even man cave. It's important to do it right.

Awesome job!! I’ve watched quite a few others make their flags. It’s amazing how everyone their own technique. Some glue all the boards in between, and still use wood on the back to hold it together. Some are cutting out a 3/4 piece of plywood, and staining it blue, then either glue on pre-painted stars, or paint the stencil. I like how you’re nice and calm throughout the whole video, and now you inspired me to go out and buy a Dremel with attachments! Thank you, brother, for your service. Awesome job. Well done! Midgard Workshop sells a carbon steel template you can use to carve the stars with a Dremel. I'm not getting anything for saying that. Just hate doing the stars by hand and the steel template helps. I put an 1/8 wood 'gasket' between the wood and template to protect the Dremel bit. I taped to the template. Doing it this way doesn't let you get the sharp point of the star but it still looks great.

Great job on the flag. I have a couple of questions. What was the color of the stains you used and how sturdy is your flag by just using brad nails instead of glueing each strip together. Finally, how long does it take you to etch the stars. Thank you
@patriotsedge6730
@patriotsedge6730 3 года назад
Thanks for visiting. Stains are tinted Navy Blue and Crimson. Since this video I now use base white for the white stripes versus just the natural wood. 1 1/4" brads are used along with wood glue and cured while compressed with the pipe clamps. It is very sturdy. Gluing between each of the 13 slats is EXTREMELY messy, I avoid it. I've dropped a flag I made for my own house down a flight of stairs on accident. No issues. Very solid. The stars, depends. We outline first with the finer bit to get nice even and pointy stairs. Then go back in with a larger bit to fill in. I'd say a few hours with breaks. I toss on a set of headphones and listen to podcasts and pretty much zone out. It's actually very therapeutic. heh

I just made a flag very similar. I used white oak and red cedar for the stripes. How long did it take you to carve the stars?? I have tested it and it seems very time consuming! Lol

It is time consuming for certain. I have been told that many people enjoy a product that is done by hand and not a machine and computer. Our process has changed slightly since we made this video, we'll need to make a new one soon. Thanks for coming by!

Patriots Edge - Rustic Wood American Flags I completely understand! I have been a craftsman for many years! And things made by hand vs machine made ranks higher on my list than NC stuff! I will soldier on and keep on it! Watching your video I can tell there is a process I will need to establish that. That will speed up the process a great deal! Keep up with the great videos and good luck 🍀👍🏼

Very nicely done. I'm curious as to the size of the stencil you use and if it's available on Amazon.

I'm sure they have them on Amazon. We make our own stencils. Roughly 10.5"x14.80" or something similiar.

Great Information. When I cut my wood slats for a wood flag I end up with a few slats that are curved in the center (don't know why), causing me to not use that wood or if the curve is not too bad to clamp the slats together tight that results in uneven surface, any suggestion on this issue? Thanks.
@patriotsedge6730

When you rip your wood on your table saw, are you using your safety arm? I don't want to suggest to remove it, but.... removed it. The riving knife (behind the blade) is the only item I have attached, It helps for when the wood is being ripped it keeps it from pinching behind the blade. Wood selection is key. I've noticed when picking out my wood from my favorite box store (I got to the orange one because it's close), I inspect the wood and feel it's weight. SOME wood boards will be heavier than others of the same type/size. I have noticed that the heavier ones are typically more dense, and can sometimes yield more problems like what you're suggesting. When I get warped wood I usually cut them down to size and just use them for the backing. I sure hope this helps.

Great Project. Does Home Depot cut your 1x10 to 37" for you? And when you put your flag together is the right end even or do you have to "clean"it up? Thanks.
@patriotsedge6730
@patriotsedge6730 4 года назад
I crosscut and rip all my own wood. I did talk to one of the guys at HD though and they will cut it for you. He told me their cuts are pretty rough. So for transportation purposes, yeah I would say let them cut it so you can take it home to rip it. Just have to re-measure and do your own "clean up" cross cuts. I've since built a jig on a table for this as we make many flags. Makes it much easier to get them lined up.

That Stain doesn't taste anything like Crayons, huh Devil.... I know... I've tried it. I agree with you about the Hand Made Vs the "Fancy Machine". But what do you do when you're making 10 to 20 flags a week and those stars give you carpal tunnel? You buy a Fancy machine and move forward. My Craftsmanship still shines though...

Let me ask this? I sailed on the USS Lexington CVT-16 from 74-77 what would it cost me to her put on one of your flags. The Japanese named Her the Blue Ghost. Because they sank her off the coast log Australia. In WW2. We had a Carrier just built and they decided to name this ship the Lexington and sent Her right back in to Her old mission. Where She kicked Ass. Japanese couldn’t believe their eyes. And Named Her the Blue Ghost. When I sailed on this Ship for three years. We sailed through 5 class Hurricane Anita. That was wicked to say the least. Waves going over the flight deck. That made the white caps about a hundred feet and more. We also took her through the Bermuda triangle where Psychics predicted us to sink. We actually crossed path with the shipping vessel that did sink. I never wanted to hear anything a psychic had to say again.

@@patriotsedge6730 I was thinking the flag with the Navy Emblem in the Union, and Served Aboard The USS Lexington CVT-16 lettering on the white stripes. If it doesn’t run the price up to much higher, maybe the dates 1974- 1977. That’s the Vietnam Era, but I didn’t have to go. I came very close though.
