Top tip: always start by “wedging the clay”. That’s to slam it on the table at different angles. This gets all the air bubbles out, even if you’re using seconds, thirds, etc. You should also do it with new clay, because it also gives a smooth texture to the clay, and warms it up so its easier to work with. And then there is no need to poke holes into your product either.
@leleenpretorius5213

What do yous mean by 'seconds, thirds' etc? Newbie so asking as I go along, thanks.
@katyoutnabout5943

Leleen Pretorius i mean using the leftover clay, and then using the leftover clay with more leftover clay. You can use clay over and over, and even if you have chunks that didnt get stored properly and are all dried up, you can dump them in a bucket of water and in a few days, they’ll be ready to add to the leftover clay bucket again :)

Cool video, but I got a bit worried when I saw you cleaned the wood board directly in the sink. If you just put water with clay down the sink it will eventually clog your pipes. It's better to keep the dirty water in a jar - after some time, the clay goes down (decantation) and you can even reuse it! But if other particles got in the clay and it got dirty or you just don't want to reuse it, it's better to just throw it in the trash. [I'm not an expert at clay and ceramics, but I thought it would be good to share this information]
@jetta.silence6356
@jetta.silence6356 4 года назад
Why throw it down the sink or trash. Just rinse it off in the back yard or put the jar of slip in the garden. If its natural clay it has lots of minerals that are great for soil.

Ovens can be around 1000€ here which should be around $1300+ But you do not get it for free in any place, dropping it off it not free, they charge you for the amount of time or space you consume for that oven.

Hey there! Although her kiln isn’t “at home,” most communities have an art based organization that more than likely will have a similar situation to Lolita. You can search on Facebook or just Google you city + “community kiln.” Sometimes it’ll be at a college or at a youth center, but more than likely you’ll be welcome to bring your pieces in for a small fee or for free. Obviously there’s dedicated pottery businesses that will more than likely offer a similar service but probably more expensive. Just search around and be resourceful! ❤️

Safi La The problem with her showing herself doing that and not stating that youHAVE TO have a clay trap in the bottom is that people who are new to clay won’t know not to do what she did. What you need to do is to spray the surface with water and use a paper towel or regular towel to wipe off as much as you can, then get a clean wet towel and get the rest. I also use a three stage washing when I wash my hands. I use paper towel to get as much of the clay off as possible, then I have an old 1 gallon ice cream bucket that I wash my hands off in that I keep a nail scrub brush in so I can get under my nails, then I will use my sink to wash my hands the last time. It’d sooo very important to get into the habit of.

I only ever did ceramics at high school but I thought that you were supposed to fire then glaze and then fire again? Is this normal or because you only put the glaze on top? I’m just wondering. Btw your work is beautiful ☺️❤️

Yeah thats called the bisque... and usually you can put slip and some other things on greenware... but not glaze, I'd like to see her explain her process more thoroughly for sure
@lisakmetzger
@lisakmetzger 4 года назад
You can absolutely single fire pieces and put glaze directly on greenware. You take the kiln straight up to your vitrification temp and skip the lower fire bisque stage. It’s more risky but if you know your clay, glazes and kiln really well it can save tons of time.

no worries~im fairly new at it myself so i understand what u mean. i believe u can underglaze before or after bisque (first firing), then you can apply a clear glaze before 2nd firing. i think food safe depends on the glaze you use (may want to doublecheck on this). thinking of recording my pottery journey as i recently got a kiln if you're interested..learn as i go kinda thing..hopefully i wont set my pl on fire lol

This was so inspirational and helpful. Thank you so much for posting - Just a question: you seem to skip the bisque firing process and move directly to painting the pieces with glaze, after they have been drying for a week. Is this okay to do? I thought it was important to bisque fire the pieces first before moving on to glazing. I'm a new potter and would greatly appreciate the guidance. TY!!

Your techniques and methods obviously work for you so people need to keep it to themselves 😡 Your pieces are very beautiful and I’m very jealous that you have access to a kiln and a mentor 😍 I did ceramics in high school for 6 years and was very close with my ceramics teacher but unfortunately she passed away the year after I finished high school. Good thing the plates are supposed to be uneven, i cringe so much when they're being moved and handled while still very wet 😅 though if you want the bottom to be flat you may want to wait till they're stiff enough before lifting them.
