Omg thank youuuuuu!!!! I literally just spent $50 to scan TWO of my artworks. Looks like I should invest in an at home scanner and put this into practice.

You are amazing and you have such talent and are a great teacher. Thanks. I just finished your video on designing my workflow for creating my digital art and your video really un-confused the whole sizing and ration business. I'm starting my GIMP work today. I am an ai digital artist and just opened my Etsy store for ai digital travel posters and nature scenes. NOW, this video is exactly what my daughter was looking for. She is a watercolor artist and wants to turn her pieces into digital format. She lives way up in BC Canada and just got her scanner. I will share your link with her. She'll be excited to find your video. Also, thanks for your honesty in your "Long Hauler" video. I appreciate your sharing. You helped me to keep staying protected and careful since I'm a senior with some health issues. Blessings to you and again, thanks for helping me with my Etsy side hustle in my retirement.👍😀

@@astoldbybrittany4342 Thanks again Brittany. I logged into your video with my real Google ID. I'm the guy with the daughter in Canada. I've been learning a lot about digital ai art. I've always painted "in my imagination" but have no skill with real paper and brushes, unlike my daughter. I've thought about doing a tutorial on how I am using ai to create original wall art. You've inspired me to do that. Will give it a try. I know there are mixed feelings about paper artists vs digital artists. But, digital ai art is time intensive and the artist has digital options to make their art very personal, creative, and original in post-graphics production. What ai apps are giving me is relief from the blank canvas and the blinking cursor. I recently purchased an ai tool called "GRAIPHICS" created by Josh Zamora. It comes with some great presets and editing tools. Your teaching has eally aided me getting set up to create my Etsy studio shop and start to sell. I am grateful for your help. I'm glad you are feeling better. Don't sweat the brain fog, it makes you authentic, real, and believable. Sorry for the long comment, but alas I'm a preacher and we get paid by the word as such! 😁

I have art on stretched canvas and some are bigger than a scanner could read (apart from commercial, maybe?). I heard another artist used their iPhone 13 to take a photo and go from there. Do you have any advice or experience with this?
@astoldbybrittany4342

Aww thanks for the love! Glad you’re here. Hmmm. If it were me I wouldn’t take a picture of such a large piece I feel like at that size it’s be hard to capture every detail and all the texture of the brush strokes (my fav). But there is a method called “stitching” where you take several scans at different positions on the Art and then in photoshop “stitch” them all together. I’ve been thinking of making a tutorial on that bc I have large art I need to do that with.

Epson Perfection scanners are, in my opinion, the top scanners available. I had one I purchased in 2002, and I scanned thousands of photos, slides, art, etc. The only reason I don't use it now is because a couple of years ago I must have rolled my chair over the cord and cut it, and I need to find a replacement cord. That's almost 20 years of use.

Thank you so much for this video! Your work is so lovely and your explanations are wonderful. It's also an amazing tutorial on Gimp, so major bonus. I might be getting in my head about this, but on your images that are sized with a 1/2 inch border, are they technically 1/2" over the size listed? So for the 8 x 10 size- is it 8.5" x 10.5"? Thanks!

You have no idea how helpful this video has been! I'm just starting the process of digizting my art in hopes of selling and have been overwhelmed with all the different videos I have found. Quick question, are you saving your finished files in RGB or CMYK? I've heard that you should save each ratio in both for different printer settings? Have you found this to be true?
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
Thanks for the love! Glad it’s been helpful. Ummm…. Gonna be honest I know next to nothing about RGB vs CMYK so I’ll do some research and get back to you! My files right now are rgb which is the gimp, default.
@mickymouse1131
@mickymouse1131 Год назад
Hey, I'm a graphic designer and hopefully able to tell you something about CMYK vs. RGB. Please consider English is not my native language... CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and the key colour black. These are the colours used by your printer to get the coloured print in the end. The concept works based on the printing grids and subtractive colour mixing (really interesting and worth the research). This CMYK colour space is more limited than the digital light based RGB world (additive colour mixing), used by your computer. Therefore you should always convert or use CMYK for files that shall be printed in the future. Because if a colour (e.g. electric green) is not represented in the CMYK world you can react and change the percentages of used cyan or yellow to get a somewhat similar colour. Hope this helps and offers some keywords to expand the research area. :)

Watching the video now Brittany. This is great. Thanks for sharing. I’m wondering if you ever get worried about people buying the digital copy and then trying to resell? Something I have worried about and has made me hesitant about selling digital copies. Thanks!!
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
I worry about this a lot. I wonder if there is a way to metatag the file with some sort of identifier? I have no idea. At the end of the day people are out there that would do that and they suck but I figure when the time comes I'll try my best to figure it out. I have actually heard of large businesses stealing art from small artists and unfortunately the lawsuits get no where. It's a sticky area. So to answer your question. Yes I worry. A lot. But I don't want that to stop me from sharing my art with people :) so I'll just go with the flow for now. Thanks for watching!

Hey Brittany, First, thank you so much for being so detailed in your teaching. I have found this so informative. I have a couple of questions. First, I usually paint fairly small so when I scan my painting can I scan it at a higher DPI to be able to scale it as large as I want? For instance, can I take a 5x7 size painting and scale it at 900 dpi so I can make it 3 times larger? Second question - Since you give a shared link to your files are you concerned that the person getting into the files will remove them? How do you prevent them from wiping the file out so that when the next person uses the link they don’t find an empty file? I am still trying to figure all of this out. I am sure these are naive questions - LOL

Hi Brittany. Thank you so much for this video. I'm stuck on getting my image the same size as the layer. I was successfully able to cut off the edges (the checkerboard showed up), rotated it and cropped it. When I clicked on crop to content, it left a lot of blank space around my image. Is there a manual way I can adjust the layer size so it's the same size as the image? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much - I really love your videos but I have a question. I scan my art (its textile based) and I find the pathway tool really hard to use to cut off the ragged edges - but if i try and crop the image then I can't resize to canvas after I've cropped it - is this why you use the pathway tool instead? Could I crop my image before uploading to gimp or would it affect the pixels (I'm so confused :)

Thanks so much for this great information! Appreciate you sharing- I have some digital artwork that is large in size but only about 96 dpi. If I upload the artwork in Gimp, Gimp will export it at 300 dpi as a JPG- Will this work as far as quality, or do you think quality is somehow compromised in this process? Thanks again!
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
That is correct! It won’t look any different on the screen at 96 vs 300. The difference in resolution will be seen in the final print. You could always order test prints in both and compare!

Thank you very much! I was in such a confused state and your videos made it all go away! ^.^ Huge relief. By the way, are you afraid of people stealing your art ant reselling it? in GIMP, go "Image", "Scale Image", then you can change both they Y and X resolution to 300 instead of 150. BUT don't forget, this will mean the final size of your image will be half as small when you go to print it.

Hi this was a great and informative video. I have just one question. What do you do if cropping your image ruins it? Do you zoom out the image size slightly and increase the white space/border?
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
I would eliminate that aspect ratio from my offering. You get to use your creative liberty there, if you feel an aspect ratio doesn't flatter your art don't use it and only use the ones that do! Hope that helps.

I'm following your video as I edit my artwork and create my digital images and it's been a lifesaver. This is golden content, thank-you so much for sharing. May I ask, did you change your colour mode from GIMP's default RGB to CMYK so that it could be printed? If so, what additional software did you use for that, since GIMP doesn't support CMYK?
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
I've had this asked before and never know what to say. I know RGB is mostly for digital and CMYK is mostly print, but I've been printing in RGB this whole time and didn't realize and it's been fine to me! :) Most customers wouldn't notice any difference unless the color values are just outrageously incorrect
@lenanana8

@@astoldbybrittany4342 I've read that cyan is a colour that's most affected by changes from RGB to CMYK but other than that I'm not sure. To get around it I've started using Krita, an open source graphics editor used mainly for digital art, which allows you to convert to CMYK. Since I also use a professional printing service for my work which needs image files in CMYK and in pdf, I've used Scribus - open source graphics and layout software for professional images - to preserve the CMYK when I convert it to pdf. Its annoying to have to navigate three different open-source softwares when Photoshop can do all of them (only you have to pay a hefty sum). It's not fair for small artists like me!

Brittany - Thank you for sharing your secrets. I've asked a few pro artists about how to make prints and sell and they all treat it like government secrets for which they should be paid. I'm primarily a musician and I would always answer any questions. I guess the art world is super competitive.

Inspired by your generosity, thank you so much for sharing all of your hard earned knowledge and skills! My new scanner says 4800x4800 dpi resolution, I haven't tried it out yet. You mentioned 300 and 600 dpi in the video. Still a little confused by the different ways of describing resolution. Will my new scanner work for high quality large prints like 24x36? Many many thanks!!!

Hi Brittany - thank you so much - this is very informative and super helpful! Question - I also paint in watercolor and I have noticed that when most people upload their scanned/digitized art I am not seeing their signature on their art, which surprises me. I may have missed yours since it was a detailed painting (very lovely, by the way!). Do you try to include a digitized signature, especially if it gets cut off in the sizing of the different ratio files? Also, do you watermark your thumbnails to prevent theft? Thanks so much!
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
Aw thanks so much! I love that painting too. Great question: I like to leave signatures for actual physical prints (if I ever get selling my art in physical form... never done it bc it scares me 😅). But noe you've got me wondering if I should leave it on the digital too 🤔.
@astoldbybrittany4342

Oh and also: I don't watermark my images. I know that's controversial but I just hate the way it distracts from the image so yea.. I'm risking people stealing it. I try not to think about it 🥴

@@astoldbybrittany4342 Thanks for replying. I am trying to make sure my signature is on the art I'm currently scanning. Just because someone frames your art print (not an original), doesn't mean you shouldn't still get credit for it!! :) You deserve it! 🙂

So my original art is usually in 16X20 size oil paint and I want to digitize them by taking a photo since the scanner is not large enough (also I have to wait a week or so for them to dry) would that work?

Good info. Thanks. Seems your process could be improved by using an AI image upscaler tool. Will give your scans better quality than regular Gimp or photoshop enlarging, since the ai upscaler actually adds pixels as needed when upscaling. Some upscaler tools available online. Some available to run on local computer, but ai upscaling can a pretty intense process, so alot of regular personal computers wont be able to handle.

Hi there! Thank you so much for the excellent information and for taking the time to teach us exactly what to do. I just have a question please. I am drawing art in Procreate, however, I cannot scale that big (due to my IPad settings) in inches at 300 dpi. But I can create in pixels at 600 dpi. What size do you recommend creating art in Procreate to be able to scale in size? I understand everything else that you’re sharing, I just would like to know what is the best size in Procreate to scale up the art as you have shown in your video. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time! 😊
@astoldbybrittany4342
@astoldbybrittany4342 Год назад
Honest I would just recommend limiting your size offerings to what you can do with Procreate! That would still give you around 15 or so offerings! If you still want to have the large poster size offerings though, you could scale up your 600 DPI image 2x to get to an image that's twice as large at 300DPI.

I didn't know it was so complicated to sell art on Etsy. Are there other websites that I can submit my digital files for that they handle all this detail and sell reproductions of my art and they take a percentage of the sale, they also take care of the print on demand and include that in the price. I think you know what I am getting at. I say all this because I can't understand how to do all the detail that you taught in this video. Besides being a talented water color artist you are also very smart to understand and remember how to do all this detail. I hope I can fine an easier way to sell reproductions of my artwork. I am a photoshop user and in Photoshop, it is easier to format my images with a frame (which is similar to making a bleed in graphic design for cropping). I could more easy do your white frame in Photoshop. I agree it is rough to pay each month for Adobe products. Let me know if you know of websites that make it easier to take my digital files (how ever they need them) and on their sight on their website sell my art for me. I truly didn't know it was that difficult to sell art on Etsy. WOW!

Thank you Brittany! I’ve spent the entirety of today watching, rewatching and following your tutorials. I have a question about this one piece I did on a small square canvas. I followed all your directions and when I got to the doubling the size of the piece (in Gimp) to the 300dpi/ppi then did the math to find the dimensions of the actual physical print it came to 23.5” x 24”. Basically a square - which doesn’t really fit into any of the aspect ratios…. How would I list that on my Etsy? Just different square sizes with 24x24 being the biggest? I’m confused now 😬😂🙇🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
@astoldbybrittany4342

Yes that's exactly right! I'd advertise that it's a square piece of art designed to be printed at 24" x 24" and any smaller square size.
