How I Make My Guitars Sound Awesome! (Signal Chain Walkthrough)

Thanks for watching this video on how I record and process/mix my guitars! As an example, in this video I used my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier into my Fractal Audio LB-2 Reactive Loadbox. The Axe Fx III was used as my main interface and post effects and IRs were done with Line 6 Helix Native. OwnHammer Workhorse V30 IRs from the Line 6 Marketplace were used for the cab tones.
The guitar that I used is my awesome ESP LTD NW-44 Neil Westfall. A KILLER guitar with a Bareknuckle Aftermath in the bridge.
Please like this video and hit subscribe along with the bell!

I'm glad you talked about Native for processing. I use Native for effects almost all the time, whether I am using my Axe Fx II, Helix or STL Tone Hub I love the L6 effects the sit well in the mix and are easier to automate than using the Fractal.

I've been waiting for this video for quite some time! The fact that you don't do any eq besides high pass was really surprising. I have a hard time making my guitars the way I want, but maybe a big part of it is micing the speaker instead of using IRs, even more so considering the fact that the speaker is stock Blackstar one. I wonder if changing it to V30 would make a huge difference. Anyway, great content as always, cheers man!

Another great vid Guitarjon! Sorry to see you got some flack on the marshall forum on that JCM 800 comparison vid. I did one for the guys over there but used a DSL and real mics because some guys were complaining so much. The results were, let's say, about the same! You could just use a different mic preamp and the differences would be as noticeable. I love my Marshall tube amps and my marshall brothers but some of those guys just don't get it that a recording chain can change the tone so much that a real vs modeller/profiler is a mute point.

I have a question whose answer is eluding me on RU-vid. My stepson is doing well at learning guitar on a used electric guitar and 10watt amp. The amp sounds awful and his friend allowed him to plug his guitar into his box amp, guitar sounds fine (we looked up the guitar and although it's a little worn, a new one would cost over 1k, mom is pleased at her garage sale buy). Also included was a fender headphone amplifier which is what he uses for practicing. We (mom & I) are looking online at amplifiers around 25w, mainly seperate heads and cabinets now that tax season is here! The two we are honed in on are either an "Orange" configuration or, an ENG setup. The 10w setup is idiot proof, plug guitar cable into amp input and turn on. The new split amp/cabinet setup has us a little lost, as the pictures of what's incuded only shows a power cable in the amplifier box. There's no sign of a manual (presumably online pdf?) and definately no cables included which is our main worry! So, could you point us in the right direction please, presumably short "patch" cables of 3ft or less would work?, but then again we don't want to plug them in wrong and blow-up the amp and cabinet! Once it's up and running I will either have bought a couple sets of differently colored cables and put a bit of similarly colored paint blobs by their corresponding location hole!

Hi Jon, your recorded tones always sound so awesome. One that that has me confused with the Helix is I seem to have to take a lot of bottom end out of either the internal cabs or any IR's I use otherwise it sounds super boomy, dull and dark. Do you find you generally have to do a lot of low cut, particularly with IR's? For example I find I need to low cut in the IR block around 200 - even 300KHZ to make any high gain tone sound tight though either my monitors or PA. Really makes me wonder if there is some sort of a fault in my Helix.
@SonicDriveStudio
@SonicDriveStudio 3 года назад
That can be because of a bunch of factors. Stuff like your pickups, the cabs/mics you choose, how you dial in your amp, the monitoring you're using etc. First make sure you're using the right guitar/pickups. Choose a good IR and tweak the amp settings. You should be able to get some good tones with those means. A low cut at around 80/100hz never hurts, especially for live.
@MrZerohour1967
@MrZerohour1967 3 года назад
@@SonicDriveStudio Thanks Jon, Kinda thought you'd say that, most reading a videos I've checked ppl talk low cut around 80 - 100. I have a lot of guitars, they all sound pretty woofy though the helix but nice and tight though a real amp. I have a 1999 LP custom with standard burst buckers in it and I still need to pull a lot of bottom end out for that too. Going to get Native and setup the same tone on that, if that works fine then I think my Helix floor might need some tech attention.

The helix is great as an interface. The Axe fx just has less hum with the humbuster cable so that's why I'm using that often with tube amps

Hey Jon, I followed your video several times but still come away with a few questions. If you are recording the DI signal then sending it back to the Mesa via the DAW Line Out, wouldn't that create a fair amount of Latency? I was curious how you are monitoring your performance when tracking? Perhaps, I am missing something. My thought was to use a DI box with a split to my Mesa mic'd (to hear/feel/monitor the performance) and then at the same time record the DI signal so that signal could then be re-amped later. Any feedback would be appreciated.

My guitar group is quite disappointed with the sound coming out of Captor X. I am really interested what you as an experienced person will get out of that loadbox and how it will compare to the Fractal one. I am looking forward to the video about your thoughts on Captor X and how you use it to make it work.

@@SonicDriveStudio Ah man it's all good thanks for offering, if you are curious I got lost when you talked about things like daw files, load boxes (is that what the captor x thing is?), ad/da conversions, the line 6 stomp thing, IR's, reamping, most of the post-processing you did, etc. I've never done any recording or anything so in my minds eye I guess I imagined a mic in-front of the speaker - interface - computer. I assume this is pretty basic stuff for those who record and what not, I think I just need to do some reading.
@perpetualgrimace
@perpetualgrimace 3 года назад
@@LeakyBucketHandle Lots of jargon getting started. Here's most of it: DAW = Digital Audio Workstation, recording software like Pro Tools or Logic AD conversion = Audio to Digital conversion, literally taking the electronic signal produced by an instrument or microphone and converting it into digital wave forms. DA conversion would be the opposite. Load box = a hardware unit that lets you record directly and silently from an amp head (no cab) without harming the amp IR = Impulse Response, a digital profile of the sound of a mic'd up guitar cabinet (just the cabinet, not the amp), which you need if you're recording straight from the amp via load box Reamping = taking the DI signal (straight from the guitar) and feeding it back into an amplifier or amp modeler from the DAW after it was recorded A lot of the stuff he's using allows him to record quietly in an apartment, but it's also a super flexible workflow in general.
