I like to use thrift store silk clothing to make my shibori ribbon for beading its a great way to upcycle and create something beautiful at the same time you can also purchase shibori ribbon directly from Etsy many dye artists sell beautiful pieces there and it may just be more affordable to purchase it made.
If you enjoy my videos and would like to see more you can support my channel thru purchases at my shop www.etsy.com/shop/turtlesoupbeads
Unfortunately videos not only take many hours of my time but have actual production costs involved I prefer to keep my videos free for all and greatly appreciate all those who support my channel through my shop - thank you
I purchase all the products I use so I can give a honest and unbiased review .
My original designs are free to use in all your personal work for craft fairs and art shows however if you are to copy them for sale or reproduction in videos or on the internet you need my express written permission .

Thanks SO much for this video! I can't wait to try it. There's some great suggestions for dying here too. I do a lot of dye work so I'd like to share some tips, too. 1st is the saying: "Rit rhymes with s---" It fades, it's expensive, and I'd much rather give my money to the people at Dharma Trading Co. They are knowledgeable people, and they even have a sense of humor. I've called them with questions and been well treated. When they haven't had the answers (b/c I do a lot of experimenting), we've figured out the solutions together. Also, they've donated generous amounts of Silk, Cotton, Felt, Velvet, & Rayon 'remnants' to The Fabric Project for our Northern California Wildfire Survivors. And, no, I don't work for them. I've dyed all kinds of cellulose and protein based fabrics and, altho there are more choices, for all of them I prefer their Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I get nice jewel tones that stay vibrant for years, and the price rivals the inferior Rit dye. They are a powder so it requires mixing, but the advantage is that you have more control over the results. And the color choices are plentiful. The 2nd is that, especially because you are upcycling silks (which I love you for

Ooooo, what a great tutorial! Thank you. I just got into bead embroidery and was looking to buy shibori ribbon and haven't been able to find much. Silly me, I took a class on shibori dying years ago, but didn't connect that the ribbon is made with the same techniques. Duh. AND I still have some acid dyes meant just for silks & wools. Time to get messy. :-)

I use food colouring. Wiltons Pink, Lemon Yellow and Sky blue are the true primary colours used in CYMK printing. These 3 colours are all you need to make all the colours. I am a fiber artist and dye wool and silk with it. Use a bit of vinegar and heat it in the oven.

I couldn't find any silk items at resale shops. I ordered from Dharma.com. You can order white silk scarves of all sizes and cater to home dyeing. SO much cheaper that a fabric store too! Thanks for the inspiration. You are a joyous teacher! Thanks for all your sharing!

The reason the DynaFlo is so much brighter and doesn't sink into the folds is that it is a textile paint, not dye. And the reason the Rit fades is that it is a surface dye coating only the outer layer of the silk fiber. I recommend d you try the Jacquard silk dye (greennlabel) and presoak with white vinegar.

@Genesis of Beauty in general when I dye we soak in what is called a mordant which can be white vinegar, water, iron water etc. Then wrap and add dye. Hope this helps
@ThePhantazmya
@ThePhantazmya 5 лет назад
Any acid dye will dye silk very well. Dharma Trading Co makes a great acid dye that comes in so many colors it makes your head spin. Also if you don't like the smell of vinegar you can use citric acid instead. It's pretty odorless. I find jacquard products to be on the pricey side. Edit: you can actually also use food coloring with citric acid or vinegar on any protein based (animal) fiber. I know a lot of people that use food coloring or kool aid to dye fabric and yarn. If you are using a glass container you can heat set dye in the microwave, just wrap it in plastic wrap to keep the moisture in.
