I almost killed my pearls by spraying them with isopropyl. They were in every nook and cranny so I took extreme precautions. I was gonna let it only sit for a few minutes but then I forgot overnight. I flushed it with fresh water but over the next week most of the pearls died :( I picked out every dead pearl and it’s slowly recovering. Good news though, all the mealys are dead 😂🎉
i send my mom your videos often because she loves plants too. recently, all 17 of her plants got badly infested (yes, all of them) and we had to get rid of most of them yesterday because they were too far gone. it was very painful. we have a couple stems drying as of now so we can propagate them. we're hoping that they'll turn out fine. my mom will be using your videos as guides to build her plant empire again! love you! 😊💜
When my plants got bad mealy bugs while home on summer break, I mixed about 1 part isopropyl alcohol to 2 parts water (iirc) in a spray bottle and would spray down/ mist the plants once a day, especially focusing on new leaves, nooks, and the undersides of the leaves. Then I’d mist the leaves/ stems with the hose to wash away the icky buggies. It cleared them up before too long. You just have to keep doing it for a bit - even if you think they’re gone - to catch the offspring of the first bugs.
Nothing like having those on a large ficus benjamin. I wrapped up the pot in a trashbag and tightly sealed it around the stem, then I took it in the shower and kept spraying it with very soapy water (dishsoap), rinsing it, soaping it up, rinsing, soaping, rinsing, soaping.... by the end I was so sweaty and smelly that I had to shower myself.... with a giant ficus in the shower, with its wet leaves sticking to me 😭
Found a better tool--angled eyeliner brush (elf has a cheap one) or thin flat dollar store paintbrush (watercolor set). Gets in the cracks better than a q tip!
My Mom would fill up the bathtub and leave the plants completely submerged. She’s been gone for 16 years now and I haven’t lived with her for 20 so it was a long time ago but I do remember her doing that. I wonder if you could do that for these guys? Instead of the alcohol? Or maybe both? I don’t know how long she submerged it but I do remember her doing it and it working. Anyway sending all my best wishes! Thanks for the videos! I hope someday I can keep plants like my Mom did so I watch your videos because I’m really tired of my house becoming the place plants go to die.
I have a plant with crevices that would break if I put a q tip in. I put 90% alcohol with half water and used a small measure cup with a spout and poured some into the leaf joint! After a few applications the are all toast 🙌🏻
A great alternative to this is soapy water in a spray bottle! Mealy bugs come back every now and again but as long as you quarantine as soon as you notice, check the other plants and douse whatever’s infected with soapy water, you’ll be a-okay 👍🏻
I've been watching your channel and you're pretty funny and going around rescuing plants but your personality makes me stay, it's not too over the top . It's just right lol, you're funny and thanks for the content cool hobby.
I hit mines with the hose blaster and im gonna mix dish soap with water and essential oil and spray them tomorrow with that . Got most of it off with the hose nozzle though.. Gonna do that every few days. Thats how I got rid of them a few years ago off my hibiscus plant . It was a few years since I seen these bugs.
Great advice🙏. I used this technique for scales. Bigger infestations do this then use a horticultural sprays or pure neem oil (diluted) to get the babies and the adults that were left.
Also thank you for being so calm/ normal for this tutorial? Lol so many other people are like MIX THIS WITH THIS AHHH with all these aggressive cut scenes and stuff 😂 I’m like woah, this isn’t an action movie please calm down! Lol
Will Mosquito Bits work on these? Maybe soak the bits in water overnight then strain and use this water to spray plants with…It might not work on the already-adults but might prevent the juvenile ones from maturing (contains a naturally-occurring bacteria and. that’s the mode of action upon insects, but I don’t know how much moisture it needs)
I always sprayed them with rubbing alcohol an mild dish soap. Also you can water with the soap an alcohol. Just check for dryness because alcohol dries out the plant quicker. Quarter tsp alcohol an tsp soap in guart bottle
I had a window full of beautiful succulent arrangements that I put together, I was so proud of how happy my plants were and mealybugs killed ALL OF THEM!!! I took the plants out one by one and washed their roots and the plants with alcohol, then rinsed thoroughly and I saw them on my plants a while after, I had wasted my time. I hate mealybugs
But how do you stop them from coming back? How many times do you need to keep on rubbing it with the alcohol until they stop coming back? I've been tackling two plants for like two years now "^
Gahhh!! I have mealy bugs for the first time in 6ish years of keeping plants! Pretty good but I’m mad I didn’t catch it earlier 😭 To be fair they started on the TIP TOP of my crazy long pothos so the top is very close to the ceiling and I’m short (I have to reach to grab it off the hook for watering haha) but because pothos are so hardy I didn’t water it for a little while, and when I did I was like WHAT are those!! So here I am, thank you 😭
What do you think abt ladybugs? In the last month I've dealt with relentless demon spidermites, heading white flies and yesterday I found some questionable sticky clear aholes. I have any 300 plants, I told my husband I'm gonna set the house on fire and call it a total loss😂. He suggested releasing ladybugs. I've watched a few videos and I'm thinking it's worth a shot. Hope you're doing well. Blessings and hellos from South Florida 💜🪴💜
My Boston fern was the headquarters for my fungus gnat infestation. I put it outside and now it’s living it’s best life. But I’ll have to treat it before bringing it back inside. 😅
🤮 Ugh they’re so disgusting!!! I had an infestation on a cabbage outside, heebies for days!!!! 🤮 Those white fuzzy ones are gross too. Thank you for all your advice!!
I use 25 drops peppermint oil 25 drops tea tree oil in 600 ml sprayer. spray on soil not leaves. the soil became clean including it kills outdoor centipede.
I've used rubbing alcohol really widely on my succulents- my wide variety of succulents and its never caused any damage. I have burned them with pyrethrum before :( though now I use pyrethrum more cautiously, rinse off before harsh sun and haven't burned my succulents since.
Just a suggestion to everyone to keep your alcohol better…. Dump out the amount you intend to use into a cup, bowl or whatever then dip cotton swab or q-tip into that, instead of dipping directly into the alcohol bottle. Just a better, more sterile technique.
I had mealy bugs on my toothpick crotons. Ive read that rain can also drive them away. So I had the plant showered by the rain and theyre are gone. So I guess them bugs hate water
I've had it with mealy bugs so many times, at this point I'm just thinking about literally soaking the whole plant in whatever pest killer.. I'd change the soil after ofcourse
I had a huge infestation on two of my succulent plants 😭 decided to throw the plants away, the crevices were way too tight and it would be a nightmare.
I bought an all natural insect spray (ingredients are peppermint, rosemary, thyme and clove oil) do these work? It had good reviews on Amazon but also some pretty bad ones (4/5 stars)
I don think I have these bugs but I do have some very small brown bugs on my Shrek ear jade plant. Its clear they are eating the one I want to propagate. Was wondering if this would work on them or if there is another solution. Thx
So i got these plants and looked ok when I got them. Ummm a week goes by what i thought were burn marks were scale and a diff plant had spider mites! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! So i mowed it down and treated roots changed soil. Ohh hoping and praying the plants ok. They were not huge or developed so i figured give it a fresh start!! Cross fingers and toes and anything else that goes! 😅
I heard to mix 1 part 70% alcohol with two/ three parts water and I spray that on my succulents. Some of them get a little deformed sometimes, but all aphids MUST DIE
That one time I found a larvae in a freshly bought plant.... i still shake thinking about how it tried to jump out of the tissue and i almost lost it on the couch.... uuuuugh But otherwise we had no pests i think. We also got two spiders on our plants and i think it keeps the insects away
Yup, workers are to care for everything but the houseplants first. Many are overwatered, and have seen fungus gnats everywhere. I speak from experience on both sides... quarantine new babies when 'ya can!
Can you do this on all pests ? I recently found some furry white looking spots under the leaves of my ivy and I am not sure how to tackle it. It’s white and fluffy almost like little balls of spider web. I know it’s some kind of pest just not sure what’s the best way to treat it. 😮
I've been doing a course of Neem oil on the Shamrocks that were my Mom's who passed away. I have to keep them alive. One white, one purple. I'm on week 3 ...
You need to be careful with neem oil! I almost killed my plant because of it when I was a noob. It creates a layer which is reallt difficult to remove and it stops it from photosynthesising:)
Gnats...how do I get rid of them!?!? I've tried repotting, letting the roots dry out, new soil, sticky traps, mosquitoes bits, and i still have them!!!
But why! why do these little mealy bugs come? I have these little buggers show up on my baby Hoya rope. I was doing the Q-tip thing morning and night. I finally just sprayed it down with alcohol, waited a few moments and rinsed it. I kept him in quarantine for a few weeks. but I haven't seen any in many months now. I just don't understand how do I attract them or how do they just pop up on a plant I have had for year's.
Currently dealing with this problem. When I added a new addition it must of been a host. Now they have spread but so far not terrible. They seem to just really like the China doll. I spray the plant completely with rubbing alcohol, vigorously. They just keep coming back.
I HAVE AN AFRICAN VIOLET AND I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. I got a single leaf 🍃 for a start and it was in water I let it root and I planted in miracle grow cactus succulent potting mix and it started sprouting left and right and then now 2 of my sprouts directly across from one another on the sprout sight are browning and drying up on the tips. I DID NOT GET WATER ON THEM. But its only those 2. PLEASE HELP
I just pick them off, and use a chosen toothbrush and water to get off whatever remainder there is. It gets the bug "scent marks" off without leaving a strong fume over the plants.
I made my own mix of rubbing alcohol and horticultural soap for a HEAVY INFECTION of mealy bugs and spray it all over with a spray bottle. lemme just say it works!! :)
I’m fighting them actually and let me te you I’AM TIRED OF THEMMMMMM😩😩☠️I have something like 70 plants and girls it’s a full time job I don’t know what to do I’ve tried so many things y’all pray for my babies please pleaaaaase🤞🏽
Please help!! I am in the UK and can not get on top of fungus gnats!! I’ve used hydrogen peroxide and sticky gnat catchers but can not get rid of them! I also just found a colony of springtails in my monstera cutting which after investigation had rotted so that’s gone in the bin now! I am at my whits end with house plants 😢
