ADHD almost killed my entrepreneurial career before it started. This episode covers the 9 steps I took to turn it into a superpower (without meds).

Dan Martell 19 year old watching this in 2019 and I have never been officially diagnosed. I always knew I had it and it’s pretty cool. It never really impacted my early education and communication wise but now that I’m older I find that rather then school my mind is more set on “entrepreneurship” . Meaning I have come up with so many ideas that will make me money but these ideas require a certain amount of money to start. Money is something that we all need and quite frankly I believe school isn’t going to help me start a business or make my many ideas a reality . Anyways 2019 is going to be the year I make full use of this power that many of us have. Live in canada too! great video

I appreciate your enthusiasm Dan, but add/ADHD is by no means a 'superpower' of any kind and that type of rhetoric is misleading and dishonest. Add is a disorder/misalignment of basic cognitive functions in the brain. Ask any psychiatrist.

The problem with the doctors I’ve had is that they never recommend behavioral therapy along with meds. It’s always meds first (which help and I do take them) but they should be obligated to at least recommend therapy if some kind. Maybe I just always find poopy doctors. But I’m glad I brought it up because therapy is definitely necessary I think.

Tips with timestamps bc im adhd and get bored easily: 2:48 - Nutrition. sugar is bad, drink water from your personal bottle. 4:32 - Work out, even in your room, just sweat. He didn't mention it in the video but exercise causes our bodies to release dopamine, which our adhd brains need more of. 5:34 - Sleep. Use white noise and read, create a routine that tells your brain that you are indeed going to sleep. Min 7h, try to go for 8h of sleep. 6:37 - Morning routine/ritual. Stick in meditation it's very important 8:14 - Use the pomodoro technique. 9:11 - Energy management. Try to understand which are the best times for you to do certain tasks during the day. 10:34 - Music. 11:52 - Block time. Just schedule your day to the minute so you don't have to decide during the day. 13:16 - Build a team, for the support and delegating tasks.

Diagnosed at 38 and the same exact feelings. It's been 6 years and I'm still working to undo all of the negative self-talk and beating myself up that I (and others) have done all these years. It takes time, but you can do it. It's getting better. The hardest part is not looking back and ruminating on what could have been or what should have been had I known myself better. Working through the guilt of how, not knowing, affected my life and those closest to me. It's definitely a process. And it's helpful to know you're not alone. Be gentle with yourself. The biggest helpful change I made was to learn to accept who I am, and identify and explain that to others moving forward. For example I now explain to people that my brain works a little differently so I need them to repeat, slow down or give me time to write down what's being said, etc. Slow and steady and shiny(:

I have known people and kids who have been on meds and they have a really hard time dealing with themselves off meds because they never got a chance to create coping skills for their behaviors..... With that said I believe its a personal choice if you want to try meds for ADHD.

While meds don't work for me for some reason, I sure wish they did. I'm working on building my skills but the fact remains that life is just twice as much work for us folks who already are more easily tired with cognitive tasks. I saw an ADDitude article recently that suggested we look at the side effects of NOT taking medication, and I thought that was an interesting reframe.

I am a self taught programmer with ADHD - and spent my life frustrated with how my mind was always racing. I was constantly being sent to the office in school because of acting out due to being bored, and in many cases I would be ostracized to a desk all by myself just so that I could focus on my test/class work. I am now a software engineer for the US government without a college degree, and all of my peers have a master's degree or higher. Worst of all... I am getting bored and am obsessing over entrepreneurial thoughts day in and out. Point being, I learned how to harness my ADHD for solving profitable problems for others, now I am striving to aim my ADHD towards problems I want to solve. Out of everything he said, I think the most important is diet. I removed sugar (and went vegan) and my focus went way up... like waaay over 9000... ;) . Maybe don’t do a system, do a customized one that works for you start with one thing you absolutely love and brings joy to you and then build on it, small blocks. Maybe meditation In bed before you even get out of bed, then water and breakfast that alone is a great start, even the meditation and water 🤍 but I know what you mean it can be challenging finding what works for you. Everyone makes it looks so nice and fluffy and easy but truly it’s what works for you. ADHD does have a hereditary component to it. In 60 to 70% of the cases of ADHD, there is a closely-related member in the family with ADHD traits too. Read this in a peer-reviewed paper earlier, can't find the link anymore sadly. So there is a high chance one of your parents or people in your family also have ADHD.

Hey Bro, I say this with love, I would suggest changing the title to something like: 'How I improve by ADHD using these tips' There is two camps, people that are set on medication and those how don't like the idea of medication. This video can help both groups and there is no reason to create a division, with or without medication, these tips will help!

If you can manage ADHD without medication, then you dont have ADHD in the first place. Alot of people think they have ADHD, they are misdiagnosed. You probably have sleep apnea and think it is ADHD.
@ashisingh597
@ashisingh597 6 месяцев назад
Yeah exactly, if they can do very well without meds they probably don't have adhd, it's a disability not superpower, saying that adhd don't need meds also stigmatize people with actual adhd, and their relationship with meds. People think that meds are enhancing their capabilities but in reality its only making up for it and bringing to normal people's level.

Hey Jay, yeah, you and an unreasonably high proportion of prisoners... that's right, ADHD is seemingly an imprisonable 'offence'. Perhaps societies are just punishing difference. No change there then. I'm sorry to hear it man; it's far to frequently a common story. Impulsiveness meets thwarted efforts and diminished outcomes with social rejection. I wish you well, especially if you live in the US of Incarceration.

I absolutely appreciated this video, so many entrepreneurs talk like they only see people's struggles as excuses, but it really feels like you get that everyone is on a different path! For me sleep is something I cannot manage, I have sleep apnea from a broken nose when I was younger, which is something I'm getting fixed, but once that's done my impulse control and my attention will significantly improve, and it's videos like this which encourage and inspire!

Thank you for this. At the age of 50, I have not been diagnosed as yet but whenever I watch videos about people living with ADHD, I certainly feel it explains how I have always felt that my mind (and the way that I learn ) is somehow different from the average. The ADHD community is so pro-medication. I respect and understand how it helps people. But when I took it I felt normal for the first time in my life. Then I started taking well above the recommended dose.... Abusing it. And the long term studies on amphetamines for ADHD treatment in adults still carries a lot of unknowns as well. Medication can very well be vital, but we need more options and less stigma within the ADHD community itself.

I avoided medication until I was 48 years old because of attitudes that it's somehow harmful. And all these tips are great, except that I can schedule all I want but I won't actually do the things on my list without the medication. ADHD is a brain problem, and it causes lack of motivation. So you either have to really love what you're doing or you have to have some sort of external motivation or you have to take medication. On days when I didn't work, I would sit in bed literally all day and watch Netflix. Adderall fixed that problem, and I wish I hadn't been adverse to taking it for so many years.

it all sounds amazing and almost guru-like but how do you get started? I have been fighting throughout my entire life; first being labeled as a misbehaved kid, stupid and other things. Then being the black sheep, the lazy, unproductive, and blahblahblah. So now I am at an age and at a point where I gotta do something with my life. failed out of high school 5 times and now with a criminal record and it seems like the harder I try and the more ''motivated'' I am the bigger the failure and consequently the disappointment in myself. Yes, I am a very creative person and can at times write a couple of beautiful songs/poems effortlessly and within 20mins but that's about 0.5% of my life and the rest of it is fail, try again, fail again, hate myself, hate the world and the cycle repeats itself endlessly. So MY ADHD has been nothing but a noose around my neck and a handicap like no other. I understand your points and they actually make perfect sense but I don't recognize myself. Don't get me wrong this is not a criticism or hate. This is just me venting. Thank you for letting me share my sob story and hopefully, I'll commenting sometime in the distant future with a different story and a different narrative. Great videos. Looove the content.

Sleep is inherently hard for adhd brain. You can’t just advocate sleep like it’s as easy as turning off the light. Address the real issues adhd brains have please. Nice list. Rich guy. There is a high chance I have ADHD, Aspergers, and Sensory Processing Disorder. Someday I am going to see a mental doctor to have me diagnosed to whatever I have. In school I had issues with math. The teachers dis not understand me why I had issues. Also I grew up in a church where a lot of people mistreated me and left me aside from doing things I wanted to do because they thought I had a mental disability. Also I was bullied because of it. I kept denying myself and was living with Social Anxiety Disorder for so long because I was so scared of what people were gonna think of me. But now I realized that there are lots of other people with so many mental issues and that I'm not alone. Also I realized if there are people who don't like you because you have a mental condition and they think they're better than you are the ones I don't associate with and they are the ones who are losers.

I've been undiagnosed all my life until just recently and didn't realize how much trouble this condition can cause in different areas of your life.
