How I Met My American Wife

One of the most common questions I get from subscribers is, "how did you and your American wife meet?" It's a question I've answered sporadically across multiple videos before, but have never used it as the main creative thrust - until now! I hope this gives you the insight into my personal life that you've been craving (that sounded better in my head).
For more videos and to help me reach my dream goal of 793,011 subscribers, subscribe to Lost in the Pond right here on RU-vid: / @lostinthepond
And since you’ve read this far, you’re almost certainly prepared to stalk me on social media. I am okay with this. Just don’t send me any more of those Kate and William plate sets (I’m looking at you, PrinceWilliamOfficial).

My parents literally met in the middle of the Atlantic. My father was going back home in Norway for summer vacation while studying in the US. My mother was going to the university in Oslo for summer school in Norwegian language. They met on the boat going over.

Can I ask why they took a boat? (And not an airplane, which I assumed you were referring to until your last sentence.) A boat ride across the whole Atlantic...Sounds scary and long. 😬

In 1949 flying was a luxury, not for students. I, myself first took the MS Stavangerfjord back to the US in 1952 when I was 9mo old. Later again in 1960 for vacation. In 1961 we took the MS Oslofjord when family moved to Norway. Flew a DC6 when we moved back to the US in 1964. Moved to Norway with my wife in 1985, lived here since.

I'm my family, story goes that my several times great gramps was returning to the US after a visit to Ireland and there was a woman who wasn't being allowed to board the ship as a single woman. They had never met before, but had a mutual friend who introduced them, and he offered to marry her. They allegedly ended up living a long, happy life together.

I met my wife toward the end of her freshman year in college (that's a story in itself), and I was off to the Army that fall. After my graduation from Army Transportation School, I was off to a year in Thailand. We stayed in touch that entire year, and, unlike many of my contemporaries, I never got a "Dear John" letter. It was only after I returned Stateside, and then did a short tour in Viet Nam, that we got married. You have a long way to go because we just celebrated our 50th.

I love these stories. I met my wife on a rail platform in northern Israel. I was there on business and she was spending a year at a college there. I visited her three months later in Switzerland, and we had our civil marriage in Texas two months after that. Now we have two kids under two and live in my hometown in Texas. You never know what life has in store!

Lawrence, this is really one of the sweetest conversations that you've had with your followers. I do realize that "sweetness" is not necessarily a goal for you. But don't we all want to know our pal's back stories… Truly, there is absolutely no way to know how your daily decisions, be they major or minor, are going to influence your future. The most important thing that I have learned in my 63 years and also was actually drummed into me by my mother, is that you have to be nice to everyone you ever meet because they will show up again.

This brought back memories. There is so much truth to a situation like that making clear how important you are to one another. I am a Pennsylvania girl & my husband is from Devon. I met him on Twitter BSing about science and politics. We never lived in the same country until he came over to marry me. Spending years sleeping next to an open google hangout, battling time difference, I have no idea how much we spent in flights and never care to do that math. It really shows you how worth it to you the other is. I am grateful that time is over, but it will forever serve as a reminder to never take him for granted.

I'm an American from Pittsburgh who was married to a Brit from London. He came to Pittsburgh sponsored by a car dealer who was starting up selling Jaguar. He lived in Pitts. a few years, his wife wanted to move to Hawaii so they went there. Got a divorce there. He came back to Pitts. with his children and one day I called for a towtruck and he came with his buddy on the call. We were inseparable after that.He got a job working for British Leyland and in that capacity we travelled all around the world. The kids did not get a very good book learning education - in & out of English speaking schools all over the world - but they did get an experience education that was unsurpassed.

Love your channel. We have a sort of similar story. We are older - I spent my junior year studying in an American program in Oxford and fell in love with the country (actually I had wanted to go to Britain for a long time). My mother was worried that I would meet a Brit and never come back, but I was determined to finish my education and be independent for a while. Came back to the US and did that - even got an advanced degree and moved to another city to teach. It was here, 30 years after I returned that I met my Brit, who had already become a citizen here (retaining his citizenship in the UK, of course, - we Americans cannot do the same). We got married in a small casual ceremony with friends - now he has been retired for a while - he is 10 years older). I am now closer to retirement and we would love to retire in the UK near his large family of siblings and their families. I now have lost my immediate family, so the only thing holding us here are friends, which we would dearly miss, but who knows. My husband has one brother and his family here, but they are in another state almost as far away as the UK. We have been to the UK a few times since we married ten years ago - and it was weird for me to go back to where I had lived - a niece of his and a brother and sister in law live very close to where I had lived in the late seventies. So much has changed but much has not. I love his family and who knows- a lot can happen in 3 years. And a lot has happened just recently in both nations. We’ll see. You both take care. You do seem made for each other.

I have always been fascinated by US history and travllled accrroaa America for a month in 1995 in Greyhound and never could have imagined then that I would be an American myself in 2018. I now wish I had seen more of the UK and vow to take my lovelly Mrs to places like the Natural History Museum, Churchilll's grave, see the Magnacarta, and major points ofn historical significance. I miss home and aspects of home (NHS, paid time off and the home Inhad by the sea in the Moray Firth near RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, but I see that Britain is changing too since my 10 year absence. Despite the hardships, it was worth it. I have.been married twice before and, as I near 50, I can say that Kathy, my wife, is the best person I know and it is a privilage to have her as my wife and friend. Despite the difficulties here, it is also a privilage to be an American.

ahh the original story, as told by glasses-free skinny Lawrence! I met my wife because I was spamming friend requests on facebook to promote my band, and we just kind of started talking. We did the K1, met several times, and she came to the United States. Love your channel!
