How I met your mother. This broke my heart... 

Himym did the impossible, they found the perfect person to play the mother, she played it spectacularly. We all fell in love with her. And they just killed her

The context being that she herself is sick and won’t live to be at her own daughters wedding

For people who dislike the ending, some of the cast did too. They filmed a lot of stuff for the final episode that didn’t make the cut. The most important deleted scene that to this day Ted’s actor believes should have been kept in is a scene where Robin and Ted meet for lunch after Ted has been married for years. Robin is single and sad and down and asks Ted if he ever thinks about the deal they made with each other that if they were both still single at 40 they’d get married. Ted tells her that while he still loves her as a friend that those kinds of thoughts never actually come to mind anymore. That he full heartedly believes he’s with who he’s supposed to be with and he leaves. This should have been left in bc it really cemented how much he loved Tracy and that his going back to Robin was only something that was in his head way after Tracy had died. Even the kids says it’d been 6 years since her death.

Ted as a character might have flaws but Josh Radnor's acting was simply perfect

I wept like a baby at the end of the show. That’s SO sad….I feared she was going to pass away episodes earlier when he talked about meeting her 45 days earlier to have that “time” with her.

I watched the series again last month and this scene really hit home. My wife and I binge watched HIMYM in 2016, and little did we know she'd be diagnosed with cancer the following year. She passed away 3 years later at the age of 40. It's amazing how some things don't impact you until you relate.

First few times I saw this part. I thought it teared up because his mom didn't make it to his wedding like she died or something. It took me while to figure out because he knew about her being sick and that she wouldn't make it to see their daughter's wedding.

Just look at Josh Radnor here, that expression oh my god. He truly is great at acting

The way Ted stared at Tracy just makes my cry every time. I deeply believe that Ted loves Tracy more than everything in the world, she is like a goddess and soulmate to him. It's not fair to say he just treated her like an alternative option to Robin.

I think this is the saddest scene in the whole show. The subtlety makes it hurt so much more. No words need to be said to understand why Ted’s face changed

Tracy was an incredible character and the perfect person to be the mother. It’s just a shame the show took so long to finally get to her, only to kill her off. Then have Ted go back to Robin anyway. After her and Barney divorce because she never grew as a character and still put work a over Barney and their family. The entire reason Ted didn’t choose Robin, and then he goes right back to her

Honestly I fell in love with Tracy...she was amazing..Honestly the ending didn't do the justice to Tracy and ted..they were just so perfect for each other🥺🥺

I think the original ending could have worked, but they didn’t spend enough time with the mother to flesh out her relationship with Ted and why she was “the one” he spent so long finding. The show could easily have used another season with the mother in it to flesh her relationship with Ted out.

The ending was too hard for me to take as a kid. I cried for hours. I am mad he went back to Robin. Cos we got to see so little of Ted and Tracy together that it almost seemed like she was the Robin alternative. Even though the show meant to protray it differently.

My Mom passed away when I was 23 a week before I met my now husband who I have been with for 11 years.

This scene hits home. My mom passed away when I turned 18 and missed my wedding. I didn’t even have a ceremony, partly due to money during Covid and partly due to her not being there.

Okay I had a feeling that the mother would die in time travelers but getting Ted back together with robin and breaking up Barney and robin was horrible. Like they found the perfect actor for the mother, made us fall in love with her in one season and then replaced her immediately after. Now I was happy with the fact that we meet her so late because it’s called “how I met your mother” not “what happened after I met your mother with a short orgin story” and the death seemed fitting because that would explain the detail. The worst part was reverting Barney and robin back to square one after a whole ass season for the wedding. And the forced bit of Ted and robins relationship. Like as a comment I saw a while ago said “The blue French horn was forced, the yellow umbrella was destiny”

This moment stab me. How life can be cruel. In reality many people go through this. Meet the perfect one and then things go bad.

For some reason this scene justifies the 9 seasons of himym. You feel the connection and the struggle of Ted to find the perfect partner and then losing her in front of his eyes and he couldn't do anything to stop it.

My Father went to my brother’s wedding and I was the best man. Come my wedding my Father texts me 9am tells me he can’t make it cause it was a bad day. His own son’s wedding was a bad day for him apparently.

What else could Ted do? He’s so inspired by you, that hadn’t happened for the looongest time

When I remember watching this episode the day it aired, talking to my French teacher and here mentioning the mom was going to be dead. It blew my mind. I didn't even think once that the mom was going to be dead all along

The way this show had my emotions on fire

I never hated the fact that Tracy died. I actually thought that had something of subverting the "happily ever after" ending. But going back to Robin was stupid...especially because they had to kick Barney's and Robin's relationship for that and effectively destroyed all character development those two had over the years.

Still wish they would have had her in the show more. Would have been far better to see more of them together

I think it would've been better if the 2nd last season ended with them meeting and then the final season could be Ted telling how from there he fell in love and eventually got married and had them (his kids who he's telling the story too). Maybe even then you could've had if they really wanted Robin and Barney drift apart and eventually get a divorce and Barney becoming a father. Hell maybe you could have a part where Ted is telling the story to his wife in the time where she is getting sick and slowly dying and maybe she actually encourages him once she's gone to give it another chance with Robin. But he holds off for years and focuses only on raising his kids and puts his love live on the back burner. It would then make sense for the kids to agree to have him go for Robin again.

I hated the ending they just skipped to much in a few seconds 1.barney and Robin divorce they completely leave out footage from there 3 years of marriage only the wedding and the divorce 2.a show called how I met your mother they only show the mother for a few episodes and then killed her off they barley showed her and Ted and their family together 3. I hated how he went back to robin the don't work

The fact that Ted doesn’t become like monk from… Monk, after she dies is so astonishing to me. Ted really spent his entire life searching for his PERFECT soulmate, and he found her, but sadly that didn’t mean that they’d get to spend the rest of their lives together. The fact that he could get up each day knowing that he will never find someone better, and just waiting until he can be reunited with her. 😔

I really don't understand people being mad about Tracy being dead at the end of the series. I mean, it's a story about a father meeting a mother and the mother isn't there to tell it with him. I mean, it's pretty obvious.

I always thought that the twist at the end of the series was going to be that Ted had Alzeimers or another condition where he was slowly losing his memory and was telling his kids the story before he forgot. I thought it would be kinda heartbreaking for them to know that half the "amazing adventures" were just things he'd made up because he couldn't remember the truth.

I really want extra 45 days as an another whole series with 45 episodes with each episodes shows them together I just want to see them spend time with each other , those extra 45 days

My mother passed back in 2010. I was 11. Some of my favorite memories were me sitting with her watching some of her favorite shows. This was one of them. After she passed I grew to love this show. And when this final season came out it broke me. It’s like the creators of this show wrote it for me. I hate that she died in the end but it was almost poetic to finish a show I was shown by my late mother and for the same thing to happen to teddy kids. God I love this show so much and I miss my mom a lot. Rest easy ma.

I have rewatched the series many times now. There is no logical, realistic explanation for Ted going back to Robin after the love of his life died. It's absolutely dumb for the writers to do that; there is no lesson to learn there. Yes, the mother was written as dead, and I accept that. It's even logical because it explains why he tells his story. However, after breaking up many times with Robin and noticing throughout the seasons how incompatible they are, also comparing his love relationship with Robin and his love relationship with Tracy, and seeing that he was much happier with Tracy, all these little details and facts lead us to understand that she is not the one for him, even after his wife died. People can't fully change even after many years; we are what we are. I don't buy that Robin completely changed. Ted tried many times throughout the years with Robin, but it never worked. Robin was the one for Barney, and Barney explicitly told this to the group. The writers chose to show us how much Robin and Barney were actually compatible; they did not show us this for nothing. And we have to be honest about the fact that Ted wasn't that obsessed with Robin. They shown us more how much their friendship is strong unlikely their romantic relationship. The end just killed all the beautiful things that the writers managed all these years. It's sad. The only way to try to enjoy the series until the end is to imagine Robin and Ted trying again and failing again. He got back to her after his kids let him do it, but that scene lasted a few seconds before the end. I can analyse that it was made on purpose and we can imagine then that their story and even the "possible marriage" together never happened, simply because otherwise, they would have shown us Robin and Ted's wedding, and the kids showing up and being happy for their dad. But they did not, probably because the only happy ending was with the mother only. Anyway, Ted did say in one scene in season 8 that he will always love Tracy, and he adds "and beyond." I guess it means that he will never be able to love Robin after having felt this deep love for his wife.

Ok, HIMYM is my fav show of all time and I have watched it countless times. But in this part where Tracy says that and Ted starts crying, I can only think of 2 scenarios why this would happen. Number one: Tracy's mom didn't come to her wedding because she died or something. Number two: Tracy wont be able to come to her daughter Penny's wedding because she is going to die. Or something else, although I'm leaning towards the second one. What do you guys think?

The series fascinated me, it filled me with lots of laughter and even sad moments when Marshall's father died, but the only bad thing was the ending, I didn't like it at all since at the end it comes back with Robin after so much and that she only told her children the story to see what they thought if she returned with her. My fiancé's mom was more happy than both of us for our wedding. She passed away on September/2023 I really loved her and I really missed her. I've watched this show multiple times. And I've seen this scene more than I can recount.. Watching it now? It hits different, very different. May god have peace on her

I thought himym had a good ending it made sense why he took so effin long to tell the story and why Robin was central to most of it.

My 16 year old doesn’t go anywhere but is online with his friends every available waking hour. And despite half of the group moving to other states, the group has stayed together. When I was a kid, if your friends moved, you likely never saw them again. That was rough. So, pros and cons.
