Now there is a scenario in my head where Barney indeed was going to propose to Patrice, not because it was a part of his 'The Robin' play, but because they were in love. Keep in mind that Patrice is the most annoying person for Robin, and Robin also likes guns, she might even carry one to Ted's big night (why not). Soo, Robin gets on the roof and sees Barney with some sort of a small box in his hand and Patrice standing next to him. Being afraid that there might be an engagement ring, Robin points her gun at Patrice and starts shouting something like: 'NOBODY ASKED YOU HERE PATRICE !!!' And then she looks at Barney and talks gradually increasing her volume -What's in the box? Huh? Barney... -Robin, put the gun down -Tell me what's in the box? WHAT's in the BOX? -It's an engagement ring -YOU'RE LYING! YOU'RE A LIAR! WHAT'S IN THE BOX? WHAT'S IN THE F***ING BOX??! -(Patrice speaking quietly) Robin, calm down -NOBODY ASKED YOU, PATRICE !

I think she brought a type of humor that was not common in this show and Marshall and Ted didn't get it as such.
