Last week I discovered I can make a really nice neutral gray from Winsor&Newton Paynes Gray mixed with Sepia. Paynes Gray is a bit blueish, and the Sepia really nicely neutralises it because Sepia is a bit yellow ;-)

Can’t you just apply the desaturation by using complimentary colors to the primaries too? Like to desaturate a red just use the complimentary color green? Instead of blue and yellow? Since green has both blue and yellow wouldn’t it be faster to just use the green?
@ladislavsedlak9327
@ladislavsedlak9327 4 года назад
I think the reason is Liron simply mixes primary colors to get his secondary ones, including various hues of green, that might be why... cause in fact you need no more paints than the three primary colors (in art, I'm a beginner, so don't take my word for a granted fact, actually, but this seems logical...)
@MrApolloTom
@MrApolloTom 4 года назад
@@ladislavsedlak9327 Kind of, you can mix a version of every hue with three primaries, but not at full saturation.
@LironYan
@LironYan 4 года назад
You can! I like to use the primaries because very often I will limit my painting to just 3 colors (: Plus it can sometimes ensure better color harmony (because the green may have other paints in it, that will not mute the red perfectly, it really will depend on the specific colors in a way). The best thing to do is experiment and see what works for you. There are so many posibilities! I hope that helps (:

Hi Liron....you know the arduous path of a self taught artist....could you make for us a syllabus for a self taught artist...like drawing, colour theories, colour mixing, principles etc...you said you took 2years to understand the muting.... imagine like us...who wouldn't know what is muting 😅

@LironYan
@LironYan 4 года назад

@leenapatel2473
@leenapatel2473 4 года назад
I have the same question.
@LironYan
@LironYan 4 года назад
You can shade it in multiple ways! (: The big thing is to make sure the value is actually darker, so that it will read as shadow. You can use a darker version of the same color (what's called a "shade"), or you can use a different color / combo (like a gray, a complementary color or whatever you like!). As long as the value is darker, it will probably read as shadow. The rest is a stylistic choice. I hope this helps 😁
