Thanks for the info in this video. Right now I am way way down on social media. I get that for content creators, such as yourself, it's an important mechanism for promoting content. For someone like me, the notion of getting kicked off of a platform sounds exhausting and makes me question why I would even bother using it at all. For example, I have been off twitter mostly for the last several months. Some friends on twitter, once Musk took over, talked about going over to Mastodon and creating a presence there ... to which I openly wondered "for the love of God why?" ... why invest that energy? I don't feel like social media accomplishes anything for the rando user (i.e. me). If I ever want to assert control of content, I feel like I am better off setting up a blog site a la early 2000s and self-hosting it.

RSS and Activitypub or XMPP were ready over ten years ago to be replacements for social media. Back in 2009, I did a whole series on StatusNet, OneSocialWeb, and others that are basically exactly where we still are now. My point? RSS is underrated.

Hey Lon. While everyone's mind is on web hosting and self hosting and indie web? Any chance you could take a look at the gemini protocol? It's a sortof midway point between gopher and HTML With a singular guiding principle for client side operation: 'One request. One response.' Servers are pretty free to do what they want, but clients only get a single response per rquest. So that I can click a link and it won't turn into an avalanch of eight thousand differing things pinging me. It isn't meant to 'replace' the web, and the server I'm on, while having some file and space limits, also mirrors the content via HTTPS for those that don't really want to deal wit ha whole new protocol. But for those that do it's really great especially for older less capible hardware (such as fire tablets that are a few years old as example.) there's a few videos on it and a few folk especially on Mastodon that are willing to discuss. I just figure 'worst you can do is say no, but now is one of the better times to ask.'

I'm using Cloudflare to self host. My upload speed is abyssal so the caching and compression Cloudflare does helps but I use them more for security.

If you're paying for any online service to host your content try skipping payments to see how long you're stuff stays on that platform.

That's the hard part - you have to get them over to the new platforms somehow. But if you're building a good email newsletter there's a means of keeping contact outside of a platform.

Tracking someone's aircraft is fine but publicly sharing *live* tracking data is not allowed. It's called doxing and no social media platform allows that.

That's not what this policy was about. This was a business decision to prevent linking to competing platforms.

With that NetworkChuck, man I can barely stand those videos with constant cutting that creates a spastic feel where their face is jumping around in the video and they are obviously piecing individual words to build up a complete sentence.
