Thanks for the tutorial. I followed this for some Necromunda Hive Scum for Hive Secundus. But painting the way you mentioned was actually pretty fun. It makes me want to paint an entire army of GSC this way. I was so lost on how to make these until I came across this by pure chance.

Just started doing up some GSC and followed this recipe, except I swapped in some paints/shades from Vallejo and Army Painter, and so far I'm pretty pleased with the results :) Thanks!

Thanks a lot! I'm really glad to hear people see the point of where I'm approaching from with these. Not every miniature needs to look like the one on the box for folks to have really neat looking armies, and I think just getting started and seeing some of the little tricks helps a bunch.

Getting back into painting after a couple of decades away from it, this kind of intro is ideal. Particularly like the idea of drybrushing onto the primer at the beginning - cheers!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

Just the little things to make the most out of each step I think really helps. Drybrushing the primer and leaving it was something I picked up while being taught the basics of batch painting armies. Just a little colour helps!

Great stuff! I have a small pile of shame - 10 Neophytes, the very first minis I bought. I abandoned them partway through base coating because I was trying to emulate the box art, which is a riot of many different colors. Lately I've been wanting to strip the paint with isopropyl and restart, and I think I want to try a color scheme like this, with lots of warm tones. So thanks for showing your process!

Terrific video, once again. As a beginner painter, I'm struggling a little with keeping my paints thin. But practice, practice, practice, practice, yeah? Thanks again!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 лет назад
I think 'thin your paints' turned into a meme and peaked pretty hard, honestly - you'll have folks trying to paint with tinted water sometimes! Better to have a couple coats go on slightly too thick on occasion that you can then paint over rather than spending an hour painting the same part of a miniature. ;D

Well, that's the plan! Each of them will have some repeated advice, since these should hopefully be able to be watched out of sequence by someone who just wants the answers to a particular paint job or colour scheme, but there's a sneaky little something extra in each video for people who've seen them all, too!

Thank you kindly! By coincidence, the orange over skin tone trick comes from when I was working a Games Day - 2005, I think? - when each store had to paint a band of Imperial prisoners. Naturally, this meant orange jumpsuits... and for reasons I can't recall at the time, white armour and other details. Yes, there was a LOT of humming John Williams. ;)

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio well I have three army's of them to be clear, 3k of solid cult in similar colours to the night lords with red accents, my guard cult is 1.5k and are in a dark sea green/ blue colour with cream (shaded with agrax) on the belts, armour and straps, and my other force is themed on those from a paradise world, they are in earthy greens and browns with a super dark pink colour for accents (straps, bands, bandannas etc..) I always painted nids, got three swarms of them too haha but I gotta say, the cult are definitely my favourites for painting. Absolutely love em. Their rules have just been released in White Dwarf March 2018, and you can make a gang out of the Neophyte Hybrids box, the same as I'm doing. :D As it happens, at the moment on the Webstore you can even pick up the rules, a box and some bases as a packaged set! www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Genestealer-Cults-Necromunda-Gang-Collection-ENG-2018

Really liked this video, something about the color choice just resonates with me. In advance of the Forgebane release do you have any plans to do an Adeptus Mechanicus or Necron tutorials. Would love to see some non-standard or variant color schemes.

I haven't got any Necrons to hand, unfortunately - they're definitely on the horizon, since that Forgebane box looks so good... I've got a small number of Skitarii troopers who could go under the brush in the next week, though. Remember, if you're thinking of that crisp orange Ryza uniform, this'll work just as well on them! :D

Hi, new to the hobby and these will be the first guys I attempt to paint. Just a couple of questions. Is the Vallejo Black you use "Matt Black"? - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000PH7OXE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1_1_6?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1 You reckon I could use Leadbelcher instead of Necron Compound to dry brush the gun? I currently have non of the required gear so having to get brushes, tools, all paint colours etc. What are essentials I cant do without apart from the obvious stuff I see you use in videos for building up a set? Where is your accent from I can't place it at all!? Thanks
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 лет назад
Welcome aboard! Vallejo Matt Black is exactly what I use. If you find it easier to get Citadel's Abaddon Black you can use that; I use Vallejo's purely since it has a slightly better coverage. As for drybrushing the gun, technically yes, you could use Leadbelcher, but you'll need to make sure once you're working the paint out of the bristles that you've been very thorough - be sure to give a quick flick across the edge of the model's base to see how much paint you'll leave behind rather than hitting the gun with too much and having to start over with the black. For the most part, as far as essentials go, the Citadel Base Paint set is a brilliant bit of kit. You'll use everything in there regularly and they're a good range of colours, too. Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade are absolute must-haves, and then I'd definitely pick up Reikland Fleshshade as well. From there, it's really a matter of what you're painting as to what you 'need,' so for these guys specifically you'd need to get Jokaero Orange separately, but the rest is all good stuff. I'm a Kiwi! Born and raised in New Zealand, then spent a decade in England and a couple years now in Germany. The accent is... weird, to put it lightly. ;D

Thanks! I'm from Leeds, England. Great Videos, best of the kind and I've been watching loads ha. Got all my bits together and painting tomorrow so hoping they turn out OK. I was confident at first as you make it look easy but there so much smaller than I was expecting some of the details you paint easily, skitarii rangers for example I can hardly see in real life! Good work, keep it up!

Great vid, one quick question. When you are painting the flesh with the base coats are you watering down the paint (slightly) to build up the skin tones with a wash of druchi then highlights after?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 года назад
I'm not sure I completely understand the question. Thinning the paints is in this case just to make them easier to apply; they come off the brush more smoothly. After the Druchii Violet the highlights are just to build back some of the shape of the face. Hopefully this helps!

Scions have come up a couple of times, so they're definitely going to get some love. I'm probably going to end up doing them as something different than the Kappic Eagles, though! I'll likely include some colour notes, but with the Scions the techniques are much the same no matter which colours you're using.

Hey Sonic, For someone who claims their paint jobs are quick and basic, the details on your finished pieces are always impeccable and seem to be getting better with each new video, very well done mate. I have an issue I was hoping you could help me figure out. I’m thinking of creating my own space marine chapter and color scheme for it and I’d like to print custom decals for their shoulder pads. I’ve watched various videos on how to print your own water transfer decals but one thing they don’t really specify is how to determine the size of the printed decals. If space marines are roughly 28 mm in size, do you have any idea what size the decals should be printed at so they fit on the shoulder pads so I don’t waste a lot of time and materials through trial and error? I realize this is off topic but you seem to have quite a handle on this hobby so I thought I’d ask. Thanks and good day.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 лет назад
Thanks a bunch! Some of these miniatures are finished differently to one another, so finding the right last few brushstrokes is part of developing a style, I think - sometimes even I have to put the drybrush away. ;D As for printing decals, I was actually having this discussion with someone just earlier today, which is a massive coincidence! They suggested if you've got a scanner of your own you could try scanning an existing decal sheet for a size comparison, as long as the scanner's set to actual size. Otherwise it was suggested to try printing black and white size tests of a single decal on ordinary paper - just something cheap you can run through the printer a few times, back and forth and upside down and all that - to get a feel for tweaking the actual size. Once you're satisfied, switch in for your colour ink and decal sheets! There's still a little trial and error involved, but you can cut down on wasting actual materials.

Hi sonic great video. Gonna be painting the genestealers in my Kill team box with this colour scheme. I use Vallejo paint and was just wondering what colours would you suggest are a good match for Longbeard Grey and Jokaero orange?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 лет назад
As far as I know, Longbeard Grey would be pretty close to something like Deck Tan from Vallejo, but Jokaero Orange I honestly couldn't say. You'd need to eyeball it! Maybe ask in a forum or Facebook group for advice on that one?
@Photoshop3000
@Photoshop3000 6 лет назад
Sonic Sledgehammer Studio Thanks for the reply. Honestly my ability to eyeball colour is notoriously unreliable but I think (From the comparison charts I found online.) “German orange #.805” is a good match for Jokaero Orange. EDIT - Ok I was Wrong. So very wrong, german orange seems to be more of a salmon pink than anything orange.
@TheMightyHellfish

The best cross-reference I've found for model paints is at dakka dakka dakka forum. www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart I ended up copying the chart into a Google spreadsheet where I could re-sort the results by whichever manufacture I wished. There are also a couple of mobile apps floating around which are allegedly good. I use paintRack (Android) but the only issue I've had is that for matching metallics it tends to find hues from other vendors rather than metallics otherwise it's a top app in all other respects. paintRack recommends these matches for Jokaero Orange Citadel (original "old-school" colour name) - Blazing Orange Vallejo Game Air - Hot Orange Tamiya Spray - PS60 Mica Red Jo Sonja's - Poppy. There's more manufacturers in the app's database, but they're the four manufacturers that I'm currently referencing with the app for myself.

Yeah, the GSC are not a cheap army. Especially if you run lots of acolytes! Genestealer acolyte style skin is a bit of a pain. I’m trying to make it work with Daemonette Hide, Drucchi Violet, and the Vallejo greys but can’t quite get it right, using the GW method but it just comes out looking grey. :(. In the main I'm still puttering along with Citadel brushes. I've got a handful of really cheap ones from the stationary aisle that do for stippling and small drybrushes, but I'm still quite happily doing my thing with the basics. Were I a better painter I suspect I'd be better off investing in some superior brushes, but what I've got seems to work so far!
